A smooth and intuitive user onboarding experience is crucial for any modern operating system, as it’s the very first impression users get after booting up for the first time. This can make or break their overall perception of it.

Mainstream OSes like Windows and macOS both have nice initial setups that take users through essential steps like language selection, timezone settings, account creation, and privacy settings.

While I'm not a fan of the telemetry prompts and pre-installed bloat these systems often push users to accept and install, the concept of a guided first-run experience itself is neat.

Rhino Linux is a really cool Ubuntu-based rolling-release distribution that offers a neat user experience thanks to tools like the Rhino PKG package manager and the Unicorn desktop environment.

A few months ago, the developers were seeking support to continue the project, and luckily, they appear to have received it, as Rhino Linux is now back on track with new releases.

Moving to the topic at hand, Rhino Linux has launched its first community-led UBXI port, expanding beyond Xfce. Stick around until the end for my qu

Unreleased XFWM theme

XFCE note: autohide panel (the clock is not), accessibility WM tweaks turned on (hide title...) as I usually have a window maximized. Raise-on-focus (Window Manager settings, similar setting in tweaks for window cycling) turned off, allowing rolled-up windows to not disappear when unfocused.

System note: I have not maintained it well, broken dependencies right now and have finally got bit by nVidia as my system won't properly wake from suspend. Getting an alternative GPU is somewhat of a mess, especially prices and getting full performance. EDIT: Updated, working fine now

I made this ultra-minimalist window theme a while ago (this is the second version, with the widget-capable layout and style-based color accent) and have been using it.

The title is 12px tall (the buttons are default 8px, though can get taller with alternate hover/click states).

At this size, XFWM has a design issue with font sizes/baselines so most fonts are cut off (the selec

xfce, mpv: media title scrolling in the panel.

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/21801277

https://gitlab.com/christosangel/genmon-mpv

This project is created for use with the xfce desktop environment, and the mpv media player.

With the use of the Generic Monitor panel plugin, it displays scrolling the name of the file or the stream playing with mpv.

If another instance of mpv starts playing, genmon-mpv will display the most recently opened title of file/stream.

As soon as an mpv instance displayed is closed, and another previous instance is still open, genmon-mpv will display the title of the still open file/stream.

This project is consisted of two scripts, one in bash, and one in lua. Any feedback is most welcome.

Finally upgraded the look of my desktop again

Wallpaper: somewhere from r/Romania back on Reddit
Context of the wallpaper: the mayor of the 4th sector in Bucharest wanted to start some repair works on the concrete canopy above the Dâmbovița river, but the general city mayor didn't let him because he did not have all the authorizations. Things escalated into an almost clash, with a bulldozer brought in to the "battle" to raise the fences.

Trying out a new layout for a vertical monitor

I feel like you don't see a lot of vertical setups here so I wanted to share what I've done so far. I found having everything at the top was way too dense so I moved it to the side but added a second panel at the top in a different color (to go with the wallpaper) for the window buttons.
