Hacking Democracy: Russia’s Digital War on German and European Elections

Archived link

Russia’s disinformation machine didn’t just meddle in Germany’s 2025 elections — it built an entire fake media ecosystem to do it. Through a network of over 100 bogus news sites and psychological operations like Storm-1516, the Kremlin sowed chaos, amplified far-right narratives, and targeted key political figures with fabricated scandals.

[...]

Just a few days before the extraordinary German elections in February of this year, a two-minute video appeared on social network X showing the destruction of ballots cast for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. The video claimed to expose electoral fraud designed to suppress Germany’s far-right. But the video itself was a fake. According to German security services, it was part of a Russian disinformation campaign orchestrated by the group Storm-1516.

If you’re looking for some solid evidence that Microsoft’s strategy to bring Xbox games to PS5 is seeing some early success, look no further than Sony’s own PlayStation Store today. The top preordered games in the US PlayStation Store are Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Forza Horizon 5, with the $99.99 premium versions of both games proving the most popular.

Resetera posters have noticed it’s the same story in the Canadian PlayStation Store and across a variety of European stores, including France, [Germany](https://store.playstation.com/de-de/c

Merz’s €1tn spending plan wins final approval from Germany’s upper house

On Friday, the constitutional reform secured the support of more than two-thirds of the seats in the Bundesrat, the upper house that represents Germany’s 16 federal states.

The changes, which were approved by the Bundestag earlier this week, loosen the country’s constitutional borrowing restrictions to allow unlimited defence spending and create a special €500bn, 12-year vehicle to modernise the country’s infrastructure.

German trains are less punctual than Britain’s ‘broken’ railways

Olaf Scholz mocked UK trains. FT analysis of 1.9bn data points show they are more reliable than Germany’s network

Germany’s rail problems have become so bad that Deutsche Bahn’s intercity service is less punctual than even the worst operator in Britain, a country the German chancellor mocked for its “broken tracks and bad trains”.

Olaf Scholz last week dismissed the idea of privatising Germany’s rail system in a debate for Germany’s snap elections, arguing that it would “end as badly as in England, where nothing works any more”.

But Financial Times analysis of railway data shows Germany’s state-owned rail group Deutsche Bahn consistently delivering one of the least reliable services in central Europe — and even when compared with the UK network, which is routinely criticised for poor performance at home and abroad.

About 72 per cent of Deutsche Bahn’s int

Germany gets top marks for integration of migrants

A new OECD study has found Germany is successfully integrating migrants despite obstacles such as migrants often having little education.

If you were to listen to many in Germany, you would think the country's integration of migrants and asylum seekers was going rather poorly. But a new study by the 38-member Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) shows that isn't the case.

Despite a number of challenges — such as further education and training — Germany is doing a better job than many of its European neighbors when it comes to integrating new arrivals, the study finds.

Germany accuses Russia of cyberattack on governing party

A German government investigation, led by the Foreign Ministry, found that Russian hackers with state support targeted the Social Democratic Party in the governing coalition.

Germany accused Russia's military intelligence service, the GRU, on Friday of being behind a 2023 cyberattack that targeted the Social Democrats (SPD).

NATO member Germany has been among the Western nations providing military support to Ukraine as it fights a Russian invasion and there have also been recent accusations of increased espionage.

In June 2023, the SPD announced that cybercriminals had targeted email accounts belonging to its executives earlier that year.

Germany busts people-smuggling ring for Chinese nationals

German police have arrested 10 people in an operation to combat people smuggling across eight states. The suspects are believed to have illegally procured clients residency permits in exchange for large sums of money.

Ten people, including two lawyers, were arrested in Germany on Wednesday amid a large-scale police operation targeting a people-smuggling ring suspected of fraudulently obtaining residency for some 350 mostly Chinese nationals, police said.

More than 1,000 officers from the German federal police and other law enforcement agencies searched a total of 101 residential and business premises during the operation, which spanned eight of Germany's 16 states.

The operation was overseen by the federal criminal police department in the western city of Cologne.

Most cases of abortion are illegal in Germany, which report says is not compatible with international standards

Abortions in Germany should be legalised within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, a government-appointed commission has recommended.

While abortion is rarely punished, it remains illegal in Germany, except for specific circumstances including when a woman’s life is in danger, or she is a victim of rape, while the prerequisite for any termination is a consultation with a state-recognised body.

Advocates of a law change have welcomed the investigation into the country’s legal framework, calling the law outdated and detrimental to women. Even in the cases not considered illegal, the procedure must take place within the first three months, except when there is a compelling reason to carry it out later.

The all-female expert commission on reproductive self-determination and reproductive medicine was set up by Chancellor Olaf Scholz

Here’s how we can take sources and articles posted here and use them to pressure our respective governments to help Ukraine, in literally less than 1 minute (I timed myself doing this process):

  1. Copy the link of the source/article + this message (or any other message you’d like instead): “Ukraine needs more help than what we’re providing them. Russia is dangerous and needs to be stopped in Ukraine, not after. Please organize more aid”
  2. Send it to your local, state/provincial, or federal government through email. Here’s a list of sources that help you find your representatives, organized by country and based on where you live:

Richard Grenell’s shadow foreign policy campaign is unsettling diplomats and threatens to collapse US interests

For Donald Trump, he is “my envoy”, the man apparently anointed as the former US president’s roving ambassador while he plots a return to the White House.

To critics, he is seen as “an online pest” and “a national disgrace” – and most importantly, the dark embodiment of what foreign policy in a second Trump administration would look like.

Meet Richard Grenell, vocal tribune of Trump’s America First credo on the international stage and the man hotly tipped to become secretary of state if the presumed Republican nominee beats Joe Biden in November’s presidential election.

A senior executive in the rightwing Newsmax cable channel, Grenell, 57, has crafted a **persona as the archetypal Trump man, keen and ever-ready to troll liberals, allies and foreign

‘Symbol of polarisation’: EU scraps plans to halve use of pesticides

The European Commission is shelving plans to cut pesticide use and is taking the pressure off agriculture in its latest emissions recommendations, as farmers around Europe continue protests demanding higher prices for their products and an easing of EU environment rules.

The original proposal to halve chemical pesticide use in the EU by the end of the decade – part of the EU’s green transition – “has become a symbol of polarisation”, said the commission president, Ursula von der Leyen. She added that she would ask the commission to withdraw the proposal.

Separately on Tuesday, the commission recommended that the EU slash net greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040 but without the stipulation from previous drafts that farming would need to cut non-CO2 emissions by 30% from 2015 level
