How to upgrade to Windows 11 - most privacy, freedom and efficiency

There are a ton of people using EOL (end of life) Windows versions, which is kinda scary. Not few of them do so because Microsoft has made updating something negatively associated, which is also incredible.

Updating software is essential, please do so. If you don't want to and don't need Windows-only software, there are a bunch of penguin people that happily guide your way through Linux.

I recently installed Win11 for a friend who needs Adobe software, and I think I have achieved a near perfect result, with minimal hassle.

This guide will show you how to do a clean install of nearly unchanged Windows 11, and adapt it with a few free and open source tools, to be less invasive and resource intense.

If you don't want to reinstall, the german tech news channel Heise has made a Registry hack that allows upgrading normally to Windows 11, if your hardware is unsupported.

Firefox alternatives comparison - asking for advice/opinion

Meta note : am not sure if this is on topic for this community, please tell me if it is not. I could not find rules, so I assume it's okay, but i'll remove it if its not. (Also, please consider the info given here with precaution, for they are only based on people feedback and media report, not any technical certainty).

So, after the recent Mozilla privacy drama, I saw multiple recommendations of alternative browsers, each one with their pros and cons. I was trying to get a better understanding of which one was good/bad for which reasons, and I thought i might share it here so people with more knowledge can correct my takes.

Here is what I could get so far, based mostly on Lemmy comments and Wikipedia pages. This is aimed at browser that share some of Firefox values (foss, independency, (maybe) privacy, etc), so I excluded Chrome, Edge, and others. I'm open to any feedback/infos/browser suggestions to get a more accurate summary !

Madison, Wisconsin @real.lemmy.fan

Madison.com suffers from a bad ad problem. Even if you pay to subscribe, and you should, the site's ads are intrusive, ranging from flashy app store games to pop-ups and even reports of malicious javascripts embedded within ad iframes.

If you block the ads, the paywall pops up and yells at you for doing so, even though you are a paying subscriber and should NOT be subjected to abusive, intrusive, obtusive ads. Lee Enterprises doesn't get it, so let this guide serve as your instruction manual for allowing madison.com paid-for content without the visual cancer.

So, how do you get 'round the ad-block and get yo' fix o' Rickerts?

Step 0. Determine which web browser you are using. If it looks like a beachball of sorts, it's Chrome. If it's a orange circle with a purplish center, that's a Firefox (or Foxfire as some of my clients

Highly sensitive touchpad scrolling fix for Wayland!

Been tinkering with alot of parameters in about:config, but I finally a viable solution:

We all know that changing mousewheel.default.delta_multiplier_Any particular Axis values changes the minimum number of lines being scrolled

But what this does not change is the sensitivity of the smallest "fling" gesture when scrolling with a touchpad.

Here's the values you want to alter when trying make the scrolling feel more "tighter" or more "Windows like" or to fix the issue described above:

set apz.fling_friction 0.002 --> 0.005

apz.fling_min_velocity_threshold 0.5 --> 1.5

the above will make the smooth scrolling with touchpad actually feel smooth and in control. As opposed to simply changing the delta multiplier values.

Well That Was Useful! @burggit.moe

Userscript to filter posts on lemmy instances

If you have ever seen something you wish you hadn't on Lemmy, now you can filter those posts using this userscript.

To install it you only need a userscript manager extension like any of the following:

  • Violentmonkey: Chrome | Firefox -> Open source userscript manager extension.
  • Tampermonkey: Chrome | Firefox -> One of the most popular userscript managers, but is not open source.

...Then you just go to the script link and install it:

The userscript also has some extra features like enabling you to mark you posts as NSFW by default even if your instance does
