I clicked on it, had a little chuckle, and haven't thought about it again until now.
Don't care.
Right, so here's the image in question. I'm sorry, but is this really that sexualized? Their body proportions seem pretty normal to me, they're dressed in totally normal clothes, and the artist is a Brazilian woman who seems to have leftist views. Obviously it's a good idea not to have creepy shit on the site, but you don't want to go too far the other way and wind up as a "leftist" version of a hectoring conservative screaming that women should cover themselves up.
They just look cute to me? Idk maybe I'm super naive and missing some context. I also didn't see the original thread or the comments, just looking at the photo
I suppose it's my bad for not clarifying. I meant more that the people on the site oversexualize them. Although, they are all suffering from anime girl-itis with the weird blush thing going on which is a bit of a hallmark in anime lewdness.
I hesitate to go into detail but I would not say that the average person attains bodies like the ones in the drawing. Yeah, it's illustrated so there's obviously stylistic elements, but the breast to waistline ratio is definitely weighted in the direction of 'more breast, less waist', which tends to be the case in unrealistic representations of women.
I saw the picture but I didn't look too closely at the comments, so maybe there were creepy ones that I missed. And these women are drawn to be more attractive than average, sure, but not insanely so, especially in the context of anime-style art. I see women that basically look like this every day on the street. I mean, this is so mild as far as sexualization goes. This is maybe 10% as sexualized as, like, an underwear ad you'd see on the subway.
I definitely don't want this site to have a bunch of posts and comments that are like "I'm HORNY, and here's the HOT HENTAI that I'm JACKING OFF TO!!!" But at the same time, I don't want it to be so policed that it feels like we're in the school where the principal got fired for showing teenagers Michelangelo's David because the parents thought it was pornographic.
the weird blush thing going on
That's sex flush, the reddening of the face and chest that happens when a woman is sexually aroused. The lighter the skin tone, the more noticeable it is. It's part of the sexual response cycle. It occurs together with the hardening of nipples, increased flow of blood to the genitals, and the vagina lubricating itself. Some of these artists, being total nerds, intensely studied biology and discovered this (it sure as hell wasn't by personal experience!) and it became a cliche. Now half the artists just draw it and don't even know what it means, just that girls are supposed to be blushing all the time. I bet a significant portion of the audience thinks it's from embarrassment. But yeah, it means the girl in the drawing is experiencing sexual arousal, probably because the viewer is looking at her and he's turning her on. (echhhhhh) :soviet-bottom:
Yes it was problematic. This can only be resolved by Hexbear adopting the Wahabist Interpretation of Sharia and banning all depictions of women who are not modestly dressed in a niqab.
:inshallah-script:
:geordi-no: Wahhabism?
Five heads of Marxism
:geordi-yes: There are six heads of Marxism. The occluded mahdi is the first head of Marxism. You never noticed him before because...well...he's occluded.
Lol starting a struggle session on a harmless drawing made for fun.
whole lotta people in this thread who could do with shutting the fuck up and doing literally anything else with their day
this wasn't even an "event", it was two funny drawings
i...don't really see what was horny about it? i especially don't see what aspect of it qualifies as "needless sexualization", nor can i really agree that they have ridiculous proportions. they just look like cute, drawn women.
sure, the reaction was a little more :bottom-speak: than i'd prefer but i can't find any real issue with the art itself from a horny perspective.
Take a look at my other comments. I did my best to explain it there. I think I'm also just biased against anime stuff so I blamed the art rather than those who 'consumed' the art for the horniness.
yeah my b, your comments didn't show up until i posted and refreshed. i can sort of see what you're saying about the proportions if i look at it with that specific criticism in mind, but i don't personally think it makes the jump to objectification. i guess a good point of comparison would be the horny art posted by the same creator, which has the noticeable feel of porn (despite not being explicit). i can see what you mean about the anime blush but to my eyes it comes off more as a moe-blob "cute blush" than a "i am here to fuck" flush.
i'm all too happy to admit there is a certain undercurrent of...let's call it soft misogyny here on hexbear. lots of "it's fine to sexualize someone if i want them to dominate me" behavior and similar. but yeah tl;dr i think it's a viewership problem rather than an artist problem.
why the hell do people think brics is a leftist organization. 1/5 countries is leftist. it's arguably not even an organization, it's just five countries that hold an economic diplomatic summit because 20 years ago a goldman sachs economist identified them as growth economies for the purpose of selling speculative investment packages to americans.
I don't think anyone has suggested it is leftist. Merely that it serves communist goals by displacing the hegemony.
This is the same but with a left org.
From OPs post, directly.
Yeah this was my understanding
I hadn't even thought about it tbh, I was just quickly posting before bedtime and tried to get my point across through some Nazi tank girl waifu juxtaposition
but yeah you're right I gave it an edit
This is the weirdest anime struggle session yet, I think.
i'm gonna make some draw some BRIC anime men. and then I'm gonna draw some BRIC anime fursonas. and then I'm gonna draw some BRIC anime nonbinary comrades. That way everyone gets a little (non exploitative, purely fictional) sex positivity.
ah shit, I forgot that I can't draw. Well. Back to the drawing board.
It’s needless sexualisation and the body proportions on them are all ridiculous.
What? I see people with similar proportions to those every day. Touch grass.
Also I gotta say, there are at least 3 distinctly different body types represented there. I thought the artist actually did a good job of being inclusive of all body types. Kind of perplexed by that criticism.
It doesn't strike me as at all sexualized. It's a perfectly normal drawing. I really can't imagine anyone getting creeped out by it.
Tbh it strikes me as being on the puritanical side, like let's not get all r/socialism catgirl fiasco in here.
upvote to comment ratio
:antelope-popcorn:
haven't seen one like this since LS was around
My thoughts are that it is always cringe to anthropomorphize nation-states. Even in an entirely innocent context with no sexualization intended, which seems like the case here.
In ten years time I will have followed this train of thought to it's logical conclusion and become a literal iconoclast, demanding that all art be destroyed because it warps clear-thinking. A fed on a splinter site of a splinter site of a splinter site will call me based just before I attempt to destroy the National Gallery of Art.
Unless it's soviet propaganda. Then I'm fine with it.
ITT: deleted by creator gets ratioed.
I'll only say people like you would have a heart attack if you visited Rio de Janeiro in the summer.
Touch some grass sand for once.
There was nothing wrong with the post or the art, but some of the comments might have been overly thirsty.
i can't say i've given much investigation to the matter, and my understanding of Mao tells me that i therefore should not comment upon it. i also understand that women hold up half the sky.
As someone who doesnt watch much anime I didnt find the art style to be anime at all
You're correct.
This is just the Hexbear Version of the 201...6 (?) r/socialism political catgirl comics posting struggle session, isn't it?
It's unfortunately almost unavoidable that such stuff comes up due to the fact that be it if a place is 95% heterosexual liberals or 70% LGBT+ communists, it's still allosexuals going :awooga: at things that pander to sexuality.
:hexbear-aromantic: :hexbear-asexual: 💪 💪 💪 💪 💪 💪 💪
hey, at least it has revealed this image to me
It's not even a left-aligned issue.
I don't get the politics of it.
Do people think BRICS is leftist or something?
I didn't notice too many overtly horny comments, but to the extent that there were, that seems like part of the joke. Like "oh man, leftists are going to get super horny about this because politics!" I appreciate that this site keeps a tight lid on the horny, but it feels like there's enough context here to be able to play with the irony of this kind of thing without being overtly problematic. Individual comments should still be judged on their own, but I don't see what's wrong with the overall bit in principle.
don't forgot it was also followed up with an epic body shaming post
post about how chuds are unlikable and unfuckable? removed for body shaming
epic meme literally depicting a type of body as undesirable and coded in chauvinist language, muscle and masculine = good, skinny and effeminate = bad? le updoot, I am enlightened sir!
didn't see that one but sounds about right
On notions of masculinity, even the chad Vs incel memes are rooted in physiognomy and stuff. I get it's been repurposed over time but those memes used to be explicitly incellian.
I stand by the fact that these are intended as waifus and that consumption of anime girls turned nation state is, if nothing else, cringe.
I for one prefer my nation states represented as cute boys from 1940
You'll take the BL from my cold dead hands!
Yeah they're just leftist* waifus. You can take the users out of reddit but you can't take the reddit back out of the users. I don't think the specific proportions are necessarily particularly problematic - there is a long history of depicting the "ideal form", from Greek statues to socialist realism - but the low-level horniness is cringe. Luckily I couldn't even name the BRICS countries or recall the post until I saw this one. Let's schedule a full struggle session when we have a couple more examples?
*I know I know the BRICS countries aren't leftist but support multipolarity blah blah blah
e: STOP POSTING EXAMPLES. MaoTheLawn u have shocked the nation
It was definitely horny brained art. I honestly don't really care that much but I definitely get why some do.
Its the internet. You can oppen another window and look up all tge porn. Why be horny here? Arent you tierd of being horny all the time?
Arent you tierd of being horny all the time?
NEVAH!
Also, the art was genuinely good. It gave each character a different personality and now I want an anime with the BRICS girls doing hijinks.
Yes. :deeper-sadness:
I wish there was a pill that would turn off your sex drive. But go off it whenever you actually want it on.
That would solve so many goddamned problems for me. And I imagine the rest of humanity too.
Same here! I wouldn't mind if it just went away entirely
Imo, the post itself was borderline and the thirsting comments push it over into unacceptable.
Damn i don't know what's going on, but I'm ashamed for this entire site and all of us together....
Exactly
The picture is borderline for me. I mostly side at not cringe based on the artist being a Brazilian woman who isn't reactionary and has mostly non-horny art. Obviously, my opinion would change if it turns out she actually has some Pixiv account that is nothing but hentai loli shit or if she's posted some incoherent rant about Putin leading a holy crusade against globohomo. And for what it's worth, a Twitter account who I follow and who's a Chinese woman followed the artist after retweeting the BRICS chicks, so at least one out of 600+ million Chinese women thought the art was cool.
