tchncs was updated!
Sorry for the delay and the brief interruption, tchncs has just been updated to v0.19.11. :)
The interruption happened due to database migrations taking a little moment.
I am new to Lemmy. First impressions. Roast my thoughts
Hey fellow humans,
I just recently discovered Lemmy. I had an understanding of the general existence of the "Fediverse" for some time, but never gave it much thought. Over the past months or so I read a lot on Reddit and by shear accident discovered Lemmy during that time, as a more federated, free alternative to big-corp Reddit.
Do not get me wrong. I am not per se opposed to big corporations. I am a bit more critical with those corporations that are mainly involved with information and data processing, so basically big-tech.
Now here I am, freshly registered to a german instance and I wanted to share my first impressions of Lemmy or the "Lemmy network".
First off, Lemmy seems great. It has a nice and clean UI and its easy to understand.
But, tbh I already had a bad feeling when it came to choosing an instance to register to. Will I be basically at the mercy of whoever runs that server (with what I am allowed to say at least locally)? What happens when that person or group decide
Does my Lemmy instance support video streaming? tchncs shows ❌ Error: Failed to fetch
Many Lemmy instances are misconfigured, which can break progressive video streaming and even basic image loading in strange ways. The latest default lemmy-ansible config handles this correctly, but many instances use custom proxy setups that cause issues. This tool will check that:
The instance result shows:
discuss.tchncs.de ❌ Error: Failed to fetch
tchncs lemmy can't connect to makertube
Hi have tried to comment on a makertube video using my lemmy account, but I can't even find the video using the search function.
Is this the problem known?
Thumbnails & meta description not working sometimes
I noticed thumbnails and meta description aren't working on discuss.tchncs.de sometimes when sharing a link. When I view the same post on feddit.org, the thumbnail and description is visible.
For example:
https://discuss.tchncs.de/post/32817362
no thumbnail, no description
https://feddit.org/post/9581626
thumbnail & description visible
I haven't detected a pattern yet. It just seem to work sometimes and other times it doesn't.
Remove dead communities

Some comments are not displayed
Hi!
why is it that there should be 7 comments but none are displayed? For example it happens to nearly all comments in the foodporn community.
Pixelfed behavior?!
I just signed up to Pixelfed, also via tchncs and apart from obviously having few users something feels off. I notice that sometimes the "followers" count is not the same as what I see when clicking into the followers. And I find hashtags that supposedly have posts but I can't find any.
Now I'm wondering: is this something about eventual consistency due to federation? Is this due to blocking of instances? Is something broken? And if so is this on the app or server side?
Running latest app on Android Android 15.
sorry for the brief interruption
it appears 'something' had flooded the memory, causing oom killer to hunt down postgresql in the pixelfed and fediverse (lemmy+sharkey) container on the host. unfortunately i have jumped to restarting services too quickly so i am not 100% certain who is to blame yet... having an eye on it now.
UI request - Kommentar funktion
Is Zitadel down?
I can't login to matrix because zitadel seems to be down is it possible to unlink my account so I can login to matrix independently from zitadel?
Can't login with Jerboa and can't change my password
Hi, I just wanted to login with my username and my password (60 digits) in Jerboa and got a notification that the credentials were wrong. I tried another browser on my laptop with the same result. Furthermore I switched to my default browser and can't change my password (login credentials are being stored, so I'm permanently logged in). When I insert a new and the old password and click "Save", nothing happens.
Any ideas what I can do?
Lemmy v0.19.6 Release – this instance has been updated!
cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ml/post/22274306
What is Lemmy?
Lemmy is a self-hosted social link aggregation and discussion platform. It is completely free and open, and not controlled by any company. This means that there is no advertising, tracking, or secret algorithms. Content is organized into communities, so it is easy to subscribe to topics that you are interested in, and ignore others. Voting is used to bring the most interesting items to the top.
Changes
This release took a long time to complete due to a major performance problem which brought lemmy.ml to a crawl every time we tried to deploy the new version. It took a lot of testing (in production) to narrow it down to a single commit, and finally fix the problem.
The release itself contains numerous bug fixes and minor improvements:
Lemmy

- Reduce CPU usage
