Is America more english or spanish speaking?
Hi fedi,
Non US here, I just read an article about how there are whole cities/neighborhoods that are only spanish speaking in the US, and how lots of places are already using both languages (administrations, hospitals, transports).
Is spanish so widespread in whole US or only is big cities/southern states?
It was an article about how there is no official language in the US and how it would be easier to recognize english and spanish as official languages.

What's going on with the Midwest politically?
Sen. Lisa Murkowski, aghast at Donald Trump’s candidacy and the direction of her party, won’t rule out bolting from the GOP. My reason for posting this question is to get some perspective, since I don't live further west than Indiana.
Indiana has a lot of conservative tendencies, usually opposes progressive policies, and a little old school bigotry in the form of religion based disagreement with people's life styles, like letter community.
From an outsiders perspective, TX, OK, MO etc are even more extreme.
This permalink above from a comment from a person referencing recently proposed legislation against letter community people specifically, though there's tons of examples of bigotry like the school principal getting sued for discrimination due to a kid's hair (black hair).
We know Lemmy is a bit more populated with left than right thinkers, but regardless, what's going on in these western plains states? Is it as bad as it looks?
Do you personally know some sweet old church ladies who 'hate the gays because they'll going to hell' or are there just more extreme law makers being elected that don't repre
What is the right plate:family member ratio for a household?
I'm currently decluttering and reducing to get a handle on my home, and I've come to a conundrum of how many plates/bowls/cups/etc do I actually need? I have 2 young kids that we'd prefer not to have to run to the store at 8pm to buy more plates because someone ruined a plate, but very limited cupboard space (small 120-something year old house with a kitchen that was built in the 50s)
For all you Midwesterners, whats in your junk drawer?
My wife wanted to order a spice rack for our kitchen that fit in the cabinet. Our current setup was just a mess so she found one on Amazon and called to me to get the tape measure out in the garage. I yelled back...grab the tailor's tape in the junk drawer. Sure enough it was sitting between the set of random keys, a new bag of neon fish bait and an assortment of 9 volt batteries.
So...whatdaya got in yer junk drawer?
Do Midwesterners include Oklahoma?
My wife and her sister are from Mississippi and always tell me we're in the Midwest. Since the Southerners don't claim us, do you?
If we could suck 101% of the carbon we produce in a day out of the air, how would the effect global efforts to go carbon neutral?
Obviously, this will probably never happen. In the best future for humanity, maybe we can drop our emissions enough to allow for such a thing. But more likely societal collapse
Who has the most poorly maintained highways?
I nominate I-80 in Illinois or I-70 in eastern Colorado. Crossing the border from Kansas to Colorado is like "holy f- OW I BIT MY TONGUE"
Hi Midwest! Do you actually put ranch dressing on everything?
Spent some time in Michigan and they said it was a "Midwest thing".
Any favorite summer recipes?
I'm looking for new ways to take advantage of all the local produce for the several months that we can grow our own up here.
What's the best, or maybe least terrible, season?
Summer is too hot, winter is too cold, spring is full of allergines. I guess that leaves fall?
Why do some of the avatar/community icons on Midwest seem...Broken?
I've seen occasional comments from folks here where the avatar appears broken, and when going directly here, I found some community icons are likewise...
Checked another browser to make sure and they're more obviously broken viewed through it, so uh...What's up? Did Lemmy change accepted image formats at some point that broke a bunch of'em here?
