  • How are we doing on this? I saw a mention somewhere that while other Lemmy apps would face difficulty moving to 1.0, Raccoon would adjust to the shift. This was mentioned by some user.

Change in tap behaviour for collapsed comments after update v1.14.1

Before update on tapping a collapsed comment it would first collapse first into a single line and on second tap it would open to show child comments. (This itself is probably inconvenient and I feel it would be better if we go directly to expand on single tap)

Now I have to exclusively click on the small arrow to do that. Just tapping on the comment itself does not do anything.

Can we have two arrows, one for collapse and one for expand?

    Best RAM setup

Let us assume there are 4 slots for RAM in a given motherboard A, B, C and D. Slot A and C form a dual-channel and B and D form another dual channel. (They are of same colour physically.)

Now I have 2 similar RAM sticks of 3000 MHz running in dual channel. I am buying 2 similar RAM sticks of 3200 MHz (only available option for me now)

What would be the best configuration to get most speed in games from these?

    p - 2 sticks of 8 GB (3000 MHz)

q - 2 sticks of 16 GB in proper dual channel configuration

r - 2 sticks of 8 GB (3000 MHz) and 2 sticks of 16 GB (3200 MHz) inserted in the 2 dual channel configurations respectively.

  • I am a beginner, though have played Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl long ago as a novice on a low end system.

Even my present system is not good enough with Zen 2200G CPU, RX 7600 GPU, 16 GB DDR4 3200 MHz RAM and game installed on HDD. Windows runs off an NVME SSD.

I am fed of compiling shaders each time it launches as I am trying to find a playable set up. Presently it is running so hot that it semi-cooked my SSD and it disappeared from BIOS on boot. After waiting for a day, it is working again now luckily.

I am trying to understand upscaling so that game will be rendered at lower resolution taxing my CPU less and then upscaled to 1080p if possible or 1600x900 at least.

What type of upscaling should be selected? I do not have dlss option which is most recommended in online guides. I have FSR. What does the percentage below mean?

Help a noob understand the airport setup and get the taxiing tutorial going

I have no idea of the marking in the airport runway, taxiway etc. Where do I learn about reading the numbers and signs on the tarmac?

I am trying the tutorials. Stuck with taxiing one which keeps repeating that I should release brakes and move even when I am faltering around. Also keeps saying I am going in circles when I am just following the road straight ahead of me.

How do I do this safely without formatting /home?

How to add KCM System Settings module?

I have come across this interesting system settings module on Pling store. Is there a way to install it from within system settings like we can a theme, icons, widgets etc.? Or is it necessary to configure the package manager as suggested on the site?

I have downloaded the tar.gz file hoping for a direct way to install it.

Why am I not able to login to discuss.kde with identity.kde?

identity.kde is supposed to be used across KDE websites based on my understanding. But I am not able to login using my ID from identity.kde.

Does anyone know why or should I create a new account there?

Lemmy and languages or disappearing posts

For almost any community on the desktop I get to see only single digit posts or nil. The same community accessed through any app on my phone has lots of posts.

I have tried to understand the language selection thing in Settings on desktop, but I am unable to understand my language selections. There seems to be no way to know if a language or undetermined are presently selected.

How do I ensure that I can access all posts while browsing the default UI on the desktop?

The Alexandrite UI seems to show almost all posts like the mobile apps.

Best font settings for my monitor - Acer VG240Y M3

I have recently bought this Acer monitor which is a matte finish IPS screen with resolution of 1920x1080 and diagonal size of 23.8.

I generally prefer small fonts on screen to get maximum information density. But after getting this monitor, I feel that the fonts are not clear, blurry or pixelated.

What KDE System Settings > Appearance > Fonts should I use to get crisp fonts at low sizes such as 10 or 8? What fonts are good at low sizes for display?

Questions: Should I force the DPI to 96 as I used to do on my previous monitors? Some solutions are suggesting that I increase the DPI and lower font size. How does that work?

Note: I do not like scaling and making things bigger than they are already, I am trying to shrink the size rather.

My primary OS is PCLinuxOS but I also use Neon, Fedora KDE.

I use Firefox and while on the phone I use different apps and set my preferred font, I am not able to find the place to change the font for the web interface.

The default font appears very blurry to me compared to other websites.

    KDE appreciation thread

I whole heartedly appreciate KDE devs for thinking of and implementing the Similar to this feature for widgets.

My favorite distro now defaults to Icons Only Taskbar which I hate because it does not let me see which window is running which tab/directory etc. Now all I have to do is right click on the widget and select similar to this option. It automagically changes into the normal task manager.

Thank you so much for this.

Searching for 1800s England manor stories

I remember reading a set of books timed in the 1800s or something. The background is a typical English manor, landlords, horse carriages.

Heroine is typically a young lady working as nanny or an impoverished by circumstances noble woman. There is a moody or mysterious hero.

I read them as Ebooks. But the stories were written by a contemporary author.

Please help me identify the titles.

Gigabyte B450M D3SH motherboard randomly changing UEFI boot order

I have this Gigabyte B450M D3SH motherboard running my now ancient AMD Ryzen 2200G with 16 GB RAM. If my memory serves right, it was working as expected with the original BIOS. Since I always like shiny things (software side when free) I went to update the BIOS sometimes a few months ago. Initially I attributed the random changes of boot order to CMOS battery outage and kept postponing the battery change. Recently I finally managed to change the battery but still the problem persists.

I multiboot between various Linux installations and Windows installs. So I use rEFInd as my boot manager. Whenever I set it as boot manager it works for the next reboots until the computer is shutdown. On reboot it takes the Windows bootloader from my second hard drive and boots into it straight away. I thought it might be something to do with secure boot, but even when I have set Fedora as the default boot, it still goes to Windows.

Now the only way I have of booting any other OS is by getting into BIO

Can I clone an NTFS Windows partition locally to another drive but only changing the UUID?

I had cloned my original hard disk installation to SSD using Macrium Reflect. But it caused confusion because they had the same UUID.

My plan is to regularly image the Windows partition to the spare hard disk as a backup in case of SSD failure.

How to reference a specific nvme partition for efibootmgr command?

I am trying to create an entry in nvram to boot an os of my choice. I have the xxxxxxxxx.efi file for it ready and placed in the second partition that is 32 bit FAT formatted for EFI and also contains my Windows and other OS loaders.

I have understood the syntax for referring to a HDD and its partitions as sda1, sda2 etc. so that I can type /dev/sda2 for eg. But with nvme I am not sure.

I have a single such nvme sdd in the only M2 slot on motherboard. How to address the second partition in it for efibootmgr command?
