  • Conservatives have more seats now so that’s definitely not the lesson they’re learning. Probably this just means that they need to pick a rural district to run their party leader

  • I just think that it’s unfair to bash the entire province for the views of a minority that’s so small that they make Quebecan separatism feel like they’re only an election away from a super majority.

I think the intent here is not to bash anyone, let alone the collective on its entirety. You can read "Alberta is a threat to Canadian unity" more as "Alberta's Government is a threat to Canadian unity". And if next election cycle the people of Alberta decides to re-elect Danielle Smith, then you'll have your awaited answer on whether albertans themselves, as a collective, are also a threat to Canadian unity.

  • Curious who you think will win in your gut?

I'm feeling it's Carney but I don't feel confident at all. Might be wishful thinking. Polling hasn't been reliable enough for me to be at peace.

to think because of the odiousness of our president, liberals may take it? Do you think that’s likely?

Trump being disgusting seems to have nudged some in favor of Liberals, but it's also not the major reason imho. The Liberal strategy of getting rid of Trudeau and the consumer carbon pricing worked, because Conservatives spent the last 5 years yammering non-stop about these two things as their promise. Conservatives were literally calling it a "carbon tax election". Scrambling to find a new platform, Conservatives started to pivot into generic bullshit like "Canada First", and that's where they ended up likening themselves to Trump even more.

Pretty much the only thing Conservatives have going for them now is chanting that Liberals have been in power for too long and "we need change". But their platform without ax-the-tax and fuck-trudeau was reduced to the same basic shit as ever: tough on crime, cheap gas, and transphobia.

  • It seems like only 20% of Alberta actually wants succession

I get your point but Alberta's government, chosen by Albertans, are putting unity at stake. So while I agree that public support isn't favourable to this ones specific decision, the people in power are testing the waters and this also matters a lot, so the article isn't suddenly invalidated just because it's the wishes of a minority. It can still be dangerous.

  • These people see themselves as destined to be upper class so they imagine their future as covered by good insurance plus investments that would easily absorb any emergency. So they vote for the interests of the rich, because in their fantasy that’s also their long term best interests.

Tragically, this lack of class consciousness makes them vote for narrowing the path of social mobility that they’re counting on.

  • I agree but we don't even have to get that far. No institution should rely on SIN secrecy. It's as simple as that. It should be treated as semi-publicly available information like birthdates and important stuff like opening a bank account should require more factors of authentication.

Several countries don't create these secret numbers that "no one should have but you" without having to rely on revoke-able tokens and whatnot. Like many things, crypto has a clever solution for this but the current status quo is so bad that a not-stupid approach would already be quite the improvement.

  • Do you know how much of our “Canadian” media is US owned? It’s massively disproportionate.

I do know, but I don't understand what that has to do with what I'm saying.

I follow almost a dozen news sources, all of them Canadian-owned

  • Look at a headline, then look at the different outlets covering it. For me, a Canadian, it’s important during elections so I can cut out all the US owned newspapers that have a very conservative / US bias to them.

You get that for free by... not following any US owned newspapers? Looks like GroundNews is solving a problem that GroundNews created for you.

  • This is good to know, but I honestly don't see a lot of value in it... I got weekly emails like:

News from the left, for the right: (the most unhinged shit, actual news for things we should care about)

    • Microsoft reports detection of Russian election interference targeting Harris
    • Nevada will use Google's AI to help decide who gets unemployment benefit;
    • Private Prison Stocks Soar After Trump Win

News from the right, for the left: (yes I guess that's also news, technically)

    • Navy Seal unit that killed Osama trains for China invasion of Taiwan
    • Prisoners should jump housing queue to cut crime rates, says politician;
    • Amish turn out for Pennsylvania vote in 'unprecedented numbers' (to vote for Trump)

Like seriously, what's the point of exposing myself to this bullshit?

  • Not voting doesn’t signal that people are happy either way, it could as easily signal that people are sad either way.

Being “sad either way” is equally stupid. Feel free to argue that both options are bad but anyone with two braincells should be able to understand that one option is worse. Choosing to abstain is choosing to enable the worse option. Vote independent if you want, but fucking vote.

  • One in three Americans voted for Trump

Or in more effective terms, only one third of Americans voted against Trump. Counting votes against eligible voters instead of votes cast isn’t the win you think it is.

No one here needs a reminder that 2/3 isn’t 3/3, thanks.

    Found Compass Card

Found it on the street a few weeks ago in downtown, last used Jan-24-2024 06:57 PM. Sorry for the long delay, I went on vacation right the next day and forgot about it. Hit me up if it's yours and you want it back.

    Card number is 0164 0235 7941 0194 ABCD

Proof of ownership will be telling me via DM the last digits and/or the CVN.

It has about 15 dollars on it. If the owner doesn't bother to claim it in a few days I'll just donate to someone on the streets.

App of choice for planning AAA routes in Vancouver?

I've been going back and forth a few apps. Apple Maps and Google Maps fail me too often suggesting me to take streets without bike lanes. With OsmAnd I'm able to mark a few roads as "Avoid", but I end up marking half my city and sometimes I do need to go one block or two on those streets.

Is there an app that allows me to to plan a route explicitly prioritizing AAA lanes that works in Vancouver?
