It's an airplane seat but it looks like it's in a living room
And there wasn't an issue finding parts? Good work!
!lemmysilver
I paid a bit more for a bike than I expected. Nothing compared to a Dutch person's weekend bike from what I hear. I got it used but the parts are all high quality, I think.
My life changed to being much more bike centric and I'm really happy with the purchase. The frame is carbon and I carry it up and down 5 flights of stairs 2-3 times a week.
The Trump Admin is trying to soften the definition of 'harm' to wildlife.
This proposed rule change is open for comment until May 19.
My comment was:
I urge the rejection of this proposed rule.
I think we can be very thankful for the definition of harm as currently defined. If we were talking about the human species there would be no doubt that significant degradation of our ability to feed, shelter, and produce offspring would indeed be considered harm.
From only an economic perspective this proposed rule change is extremely counter productive. We learn an enormous amount from animals and that knowledge creates enormous economic value.
An example is the horseshoe crab. The Virginia Institute of Marine Science estimates the value of horseshoe crabs to the medical research industry at $100M per year. In 2023, the US Fish and Wildlife Service began work to aid their reproduction and support this industry. If harm is no longer defined as a significant decline in ability to reproduce, will we be able to

I had no idea where bee's wax came from. Cool
I think it would be hard to find a hedgehog that would allow itself to be combed.
I think we are very much in agreement. I don't read a lot of what goes on in Showerthoughts. I would rather let people sort out their differences. Several users reported the thread, meaning that they wanted a moderator to take action.
If someone prefers zero moderation then they will need to look outside of Lemmy.world.
You should be able to see all the reports against you here: https://lemmy.world/modlog?page=1&actionType=All&userId=13046809
I observe two things about your comment.
- You have an unpopular opinion of JK Rowling. I want to build a welcoming community so I want to support people with unpopular opinions, like yours.
- The comment is written in a way that not only states your opinion but is aggressive towards the other users. In isolation this comment isn't too bad but in the context of your other comments there is a trend of agression that stirs up more aggression. I want to build a welcoming community so I want to avoid aggression towards users.
These two points are at odds. I originally removed your comment, you didn't like that, you sent me a DM, so I tried this approach.
If you were in my shoes, how would you resolve the conflict created by observations 1 & 2?
What is bullshit? Im open to criticism. I am open to conversations.
Mod here. This thread devolved and reports were flying around so now it's gone.
It was kicked off with the above comment. rainrain asked a question. If we assume the best intentions, it is a reasonable question but it could be interpreted as being hostile.
Leraje did a good job answering the question in a kind way.
In general, please approach opposing ideas with curiosity not hostility. We are all on the same team, we are all working together to build a better internet.
Not working on voyager
Thanks, I expected it would figure itself out. But I guess it only works in the desktop -> mobile direction, not the reverse.

Do you understand the phrase: "Un dog is courir in the park, und le master cour après." How about...

- "Ein dog run dans le park, et son owner rennt après."
- "Un dog läuft in le parc, son master run après."
- "Ein doggy cour dans le parc, und der owner läuft nach ihm."
The silly language used in the 'Poland ball' memes got me wondering if that language was actually easier to understand for users of multiple languages. So I tried to get chatGPT to unite multiple languages (I tried Le Chat first but it wasn't as good).
My prompt:
Rewrite this phrase so that it is most understandable to people that only speak English, other people that only speak french, and a third group that only speaks German. You may use words from any language and you may misspell words if the word you use, although being mispelled, is more easily understood by speakers of both languages. You may not use slashes to separate two words for the same thing. You may change the phrase's structure as long as the meaning is the same. The phrase is: There is a dog running in the park. The owner is running after it

TIL the Hairy Ball theorem
The theorem has been expressed colloquially as "you can't comb a hairy ball flat without creating a cowlick" or "you can't comb the hair on a coconut".

I try to write good documentation, but when introducing someone for the first time I try to talk them through the documentation. Turns out my documentation could always use some improvements and it helps them feel comfortable with the documentation so they can reference back to it more easily.
Man I hope he there are grounds to sue and block this. I don't want a government that runs like a business, not a US business.

Refugee host countries by wealth and population

I was curious how well wealthy countries do at hosting refugees.
The plots are interactive so its better to view them here: https://www.unhcr.org/refugee-statistics/insights/explainers/refugee-hosting-metrics.html
In the plot, the size of the circle is the number of refugees.
Germany is really doing an amazing job, y'all should be proud.
Compared to Chile, the US has 15x the population and 5x the wealth per capita but hosts fewer refugees. I certainly don't have the full picture but its not a good look.

If congress created USAID, and gave administrative power to the President, can the President dismantle USAID?
I gather that congress required the creation of USAID and provided funds for it through the Foreign Assistance Act. Through that act the President is given power (and requirement?) to execute the mission, with a lot of rules to guide the execution. So if the USAID agency is being dismantled, is the President not still required to fulfill the mission of the Foreign Assistance Act?
Some examples from the text of the Foreign Assistance Act:
Title I — Development Loan Fund
The President shall establish a fund to be known as the "Development Loan Fund " to be used by the President to make loans pursuant to the authority contained in this title. (b) The President is authorized to make loans payable as to principal and interest in United States dollars on such terms and conditions as he may determine, in order to promote the economic development of less developed

The Tesseract Lemmy app shows a news source ranking from MBFC

The tesseract Lemmy app, has a little overview from mediabiasfactcheck.com (MBFC). It seems like a clever way to foster a healthy community.
If you click on the ranking you get details.

EDIT: Sorry to stir up an old hornet's nest.
EDIT2: Commenters have some valid criticisms of MBFC. Even if there are flaws, I would like to celebrate all attempts at elevating the conversations we are having.

Whats a good tool for tracking my emissions?
I tried apps like Klima and Earth Hero. Earth Hero is especially good but I would like to play with the numbers myself for specific scenarios like snapshots of my emissions, planning my next year, logging my specific air travel, hobbies, etc.
If anyone has a spreadsheet model I would be grateful. Otherwise I can build one. Earth Hero gives a lot of references to their source models.

Ready Player One | Sci-fi
I feel like this is low hanging fruit with the Lemmy community. I think this movie is so much fun. Such a nostalgia trip.
I would be curious how much gen alpha would enjoy it.

The Duolingo artists seem.... fun

Is Duo a brony? If they keep escalating their antics these will be NSFW soon.

Do I cook Daal with a lid on?

I received the Dishoom cookbook for Christmas, I'm trying the Daal first :/. They don't say if I should cover the Daal while cooking. It seems like it would be far too watery with a lid on. They even talk of adding water if it gets low.
Follow-up edit: mistakes were made but ok for a first try. I left it off and simmering for 1.5hrs but it was still pretty watery. I should have started with less water. Then I forgot the cream until after the first bowl... Oops. Thanks for all the tips!

Whoa Quiblr (Lemmy app) seems cool!
Quiblr is a place to explore online communities that match your hobbies and interests. Jump in and find your community!
It's a Lemmy front end, very clean. On your local device it runs some algorithm that tries curate a better feed for you based on your interactions with Lemmy. Not unlike many larger social media sites.
You can also sort by the normal filters like 'active', 'new', etc.
I read about it burried in some comments.
It's great to see so many front ends and experimentation within the Fediverse.
Another interesting frontend is tesseract.dubvee.org which has some clever features, and good mod tools.

Daily life + scifi

The artist: http://www.simonstalenhag.se/es.html
I always really liked these pieces. Mixing the mundane with scifi.
My friend does something similar and paints scifi elements on top of old boring prints from second hand stores. I'll have to get a picture and share.

META: What are your favorite shower thoughts?
A Shower Thought is a concept that is hard to define but you know a good one when you see it. If you see some that are especially good, please link them in the comments.
I want to add a few examples to the sidebar to help shape the community, so it makes sense that they should come from the community.
Please upvote the ones you like.

How many Lemmings do you know IRL?
I don't know any Lemmy users IRL. I have nudged my friends towards it. My partner has asked me to post things a few times. Just curious.

The Ministry for the Future makes open source social media look easy.
I did like the book but I also thought they solved huge problems in a single short chapter with minimal detail.
In one chapter it's mentioned that one of the characters is working on some open source social media. A few chapters later it becomes the dominant social media in the world... oh and also payment method... Oh and blockchain...
Being a big fan of Lemmy, I think the book is a bit optimistic.
