  • Ditto.

It historically the charging port for me that fails first to the point I can't reasonably return it. So this time I got a phone with wireless charging ... which stopped working after a few months and I'm back on USB C charging for years now.

At least C is a little more physically robust than older versions.

I haven't had a phone reach end of life for security updates yet, but that drive me to get a newer one too.

  • Yes, please. I was just thinking about looking for a new citizen science thing to do over the winter and this falls in my lap. Please DM the discord link to me as well.

  • Aye. Bookmarking this thread to remind people when I see complaints Lemmy isn't taking off enough except for super technical topics.

  • Description from Letterboxd:

A woman answers a help wanted ad to be a housekeeper in a mysterious high-rise in New York City, not realizing she is entering a community that has seen a number of disappearances over the years and may be under the grip of a Satanic cult.

In addition to Zazie Beetz on the poster, the cast includes Patricia Arquette and Tom Felton.

  • I use an app that doesn't show profile pictures by default.

I apply a user tag to anyone I want to recognize.

  • And I'm also atheist, but raised Catholic and had a few schoolmates who became priests or nuns, and even more who explored it but left before making a permanent commitment.

I've got enough anecdotal evidence to cast a very skeptical eye on your claim that homeless broke dudes are the ones that go into the priesthood. So in an effort to get something a little better than my anecdotes, I websearched the phrase "demographics of men who become priests"

And got this page, https://www.thecatholictelegraph.com/over-400-men-in-u-s-to-be-ordained-in-2025-most-felt-called-to-priesthood-by-age-16/100087, which says:

On average, ordinands first started to consider becoming a priest at 16 years old, but 35% said they began to think about entering the priesthood in elementary school between the ages of 6 and 13.

Not lining up with your theory unless you think there's a lot of homeless 16 year olds becoming priests.

And I guess caveat that I'm in US currently, most familiar with Western countries approach to Catholic religious life.

  • Who hasn't experienced some personal calamity? Seems like something that can be retroactively applied to anyone.

Dude went into the seminary to become a priest after his girlfriend dumped him? Personal calamity! He's hiding from future dumpings by becoming a priest!

  • I had some great aunts, now deceased, who became nuns and didn't really own anything themselves personally.

  • a) A short story collection in translation - one of Franz Kafka's, there are a few. On my list because I haven't read more than one or two of his, yet his work gets referenced a lot; I'd like to understand the references a bit better.

    b) A nonfiction book about Indigenous history - I've got several on my list about Standing Bear and the Ponca. Chosen because the area in which I grew up are their lands and because Standing Bear was a badass.

    c) A queer historical romance novel - I don't read much romance so mix in some vampires for The Gilda Tales by Jewelle Gomez.

    d) A translated classic - I'll double dip with some other prompt, probably

    e) A young adult novel by a Latinx author - TBD

    f) A biography about a Black historical figure - The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, a black woman's cervical cancer cells were "acquired" and are to do this day one of the most important cell lines supporting medical research.

    g) A crime novel set outside of the US, UK, or Canada - TBD, probably a double dip

    h) A nonfiction book about philosophy - something by Seneca, certainly his On the shortness of life essay. I want to read more on stoicism but the broey-ness of Marcus Aurelius fans has really turned me off it. Maybe Seneca will fit better.

    i) A literary or contemporary debut published in 2026 - TBD

    j) The first book in a fantasy series - TBD, prob another double dip

  • I would never say single parents shouldn't date. What a horrible thing to say. Some single parents maybe shouldn't date while they get their personal lives in a good place, but that applies to anyone whether they have kids or not.

As for whether I would date one, sure. Age of kid(s), how the single parent sees my role, and where they are with establishing custody if there's another parent in the picture matters.

Very unlikely to date a single father ever again. Tried that multiple times and the draw of gender roles to put mother-type responsibilities on me was an ever-present threat.

The single mothers I've dated had their child-rearing under control, had good communication, and were intentional with how they asked me to interact with their kids. Much healthier for the kids and for our relationships.

I probably wouldn't date someone with multiple very young children. I will not date someone in the middle of contentious divorce or custody negotiations.

  • Wicked, in prep for Wicked 2.

Prince of Darkness (1987). I learned it's part of John Carpenter's "Apocalypse Trilogy" along with The Thing and In the Mouth of Madness. The latter being my favorite JC movie.

  • No, I don't remember all the places. I had a stretch of time not being welcome at my home address, so couch surfed for a couple months. I stayed in at least six different places. That summer is a blur.

  • Leto is impervious to cancellation somehow. He managed to tank Morbius in theaters not once but twice. Plus something like 9 sexual assault allegations. How are any studios still taking a risk on him? Either people are gonna hate any movie he's in, or he's going to get caught assaulting women again. Why, why, why, when there are so many men out there who are better actors and who don't assault their coworkers?

  • When they're dirty and/or when the doors are terrible. 1 inch gaps between panels, loose or missing hardware, door flies open and I make eye contact with a stranger walking by as I'm poopin'.

  • I had a college sports team reunion and several teammates asked for a copy of a championship game. I still had the digital file, so posted it in a Dropbox thinking that would be easy enough for people whose hobbies don't involve computers.

Nope, I was spending too much time on tech support so offered flash drives with video files.

Nope, still too much for two teammates so after a phone call to understand what tech they had at home and were comfortable with, I burned them each DVDs.

It didn't get that far, but I was prepared to use my library's digital-to-VHS-to-digital workstation to copy them an old-timey VHS tape if the DVDs didn't work. The library even has a stash of never-unwrapped VHS tapes they'll sell you.

  • Pre-covid, I had used Tinder, OKC, others a few times and while living in various states. Location made a big difference as to which platform was any good. One city, Tinder would be king and give decent results, but next city it would be a wasteland with trash and bots.

Post-covid, either the apps got even more money-hungry or I changed enough to not deal with the bullshit on those apps anymore. I found them worthless and haven't gone back.

I recall one message that was almost word for word match for a DM I had gotten on Reddit in that similar timeframe. Something along the lines of using my body and leaving me ruined for life. I figured if a pseudonymous reddit account, no photos or physical description of me, no posts even vaguely waving in the direction of sexual things gets the same sort of messages as my actual, intentional dating profile, I no longer wanted to interact with the men on those forums. Yeah, yeah, "not all men" but there's no way to filter them out from the ones with baseline social skills.
