  • Did Harlan Ellison sue this movie, too? Jokes aside, Mr. Ellison is a prime example of how you can be super creative and provide so much joy to the world while also being a major asset hole.

Edit: leaving my typo because it kind of enhances the joke.

  • Without going into detail I know there are a lot of things that are illegal to patent for more or less bureaucratic reasons, like paraphernalia, but you can get around it by saying that it’s for tobacco. Also, the military branches have representatives that work in the patent office, so if you find a unique way to kill people you are about to either become very rich, or very arrested.

  • I feel like that’s going to be the response. When stocks were dropping “THIS IS BECAUSE OF TRUMPS TARIFFS!!!” And now that they are going back up they will say “Well…. There are a lot of factors that go into global economics and it’s not a monolith”

  • No Stupid Questions @lemmy.world
    spacecadet @lemm.ee

How wil people react if Trump is right about Tariffs?

Tariffs are not a new concept and have been used historically to build economies. Top China analysts in the Obama administration credited its economic rise to protective tariffs and high barriers to entry for any foreign companies to sell in country.

I’m probably a bit older than most lemmy users and remember when tariffs were a major talking point for democrats as a positive thing to protect American jobs. Hell, growing up in the Midwest, all my dad and his buddies that worked union jobs had to vote democrat because of their aggressive tariff policy to protect their jobs.

So what if trump is right about tariffs and it reinvigorates the American economy? Will people find another reason to credit the success to? Will it be the end of blue collar voting for the democrats?

Edit: Markets are rebounding hard, I bought low, glad Lemmy is full of pseudo intellectual economic morons. How is Lemmy going to cope now?

  • You fought in the trenches against the Nazis? You must be over 100 years old!

    Edit:

Child: Grandpa, did you serve in the Great War?

Grandpa: No, I experienced much worse, I fought the Nazis on 4chan via chat from the comfort of a $3800 studio apartment in Seattle with my parents trust fund money.

  • Statistically, women leaders start more wars than men, so a matriarchal society signs us up for more war. The group statistically likely to start less wars is former soldiers, probably because they know the horrors.

Maybe leadership is more “content of character” than a gender issue

  • For wild animals, probably not. For domestic animals, like a dog for example, we know they have been bred to be loyal to humans. What is interesting is that some dogs prefer certain physical features and get defensive about others. My dog for instance prefers women, and in particular, brunette women, as that is what my fiancé is. But my dog freaks out when she sees a man with a beard. I don’t think my dog views brunette women as cute and men with beards as not cute, but something makes her find one type safe and attractive and another type dangerous and repulsive. What’s interesting is when I grow my beard out (about an inch or two before it’s too itchy and I shave it) she loves it and can’t stop licking my face.
