  • There are a lot of assumptions baked into everything you're saying. It's really not that deep. Google Pixels make up a tiny fraction of total mobile market share. This isn't the start of some doomsday scenario where the only computers available are Google Pixels. You're allowed to buy what you want. I need a phone anyway. All of them are kinda shit from an openness/repairability standpoint. And personally I'd rather have one device than two if I can.

relying on a country that doles out sanctions and bombings like it's parking tickets.

This is a much larger issue that has little to do with anything we're talking about

locked down further this year to allow only google-sanctioned software

This does not apply to GrapheneOS, which again you are allowed to install to these devices. Plus they allow use of the linux terminal which people have been experimenting with to run full linux apps (https://www.androidauthority.com/run-desktop-linux-apps-on-android-how-to-3586539/)

  • locked down

How? They allow users to install 3rd party ROMs and GrapheneOS

    unrepairable

They're not the best, but far from the worst. I've done multiple repairs on mine without much issue. There are first party parts and guides available on iFixit.

    us company

    I guess?

    aids in war and surveillance!

You'd be hard pressed to find a manufacturer that doesn't

This feature is a positive change. Enabling people to minimize the number of devices they need has the potential to significantly reduce the amount of ewaste people generate, and makes desktop features more accessible to people who can't afford multiple devices.

  • It does in fact work with GOS. I don't believe this build has been released yet though so you likely still need to toggle it on in the dev settings.

  • My guy if you use that phone for anything remotely sensitive you should get a new one. It hasn't received security updates in over 2 years. The 8a is about $200 refurbished with 6 more years of updates and you won't notice the bump if you use a case.

  • Technology @lemmy.world

Your Pixel can now double up as a full Android PC with nothing more than a USB-C cable

  • This is a really bad take. Not all vegans are vegans for the same reason. Often pets are adopted from e.g. shelters to protect them from a worse fate. You can have a pet while providing it with freedom.

  • The senior vote has practically enabled fascism

This is just false. The 50-64 year old vote was far more pro Trump than the 65+ cohort. Older age does not mean more pro trump overall.

There's honestly too much else going on with your arguments for me to sit here and pick it apart, but it essentially boils down to (1) it is not every old person's fault that things are the way they are (spoiler: the rich and powerful are to blame) and (2) the stripping of rights you describe would disproportionately impact marginalized or poor groups of people. I highly recommend this podcast episode. Pretty much everything else I would say is in it:

  • HW is mid at best and overpriced

GOS has strict security requirements and so far Pixels have been the only devices out there that both allow GOS installation and meet their security requirements. Simple as.

Personally apart from repairability, I see very little meaningful difference in phone hardware these days. And a series Pixels are very reasonably priced.

  • Unfortunately the first device from this partnership is unlikely to be cheaper than the a series Pixel lineup. The GrapheneOS team already confirmed it will have a flagship snapdragon SOC. Have you looked into used a series Pixel devices? The 8a can be had refurbished in the low $200 range, and it will have software support for 5 more years. The 9a can be had for about $250 and will receive 6 more years of updates.

  • GOS already confirmed it's shipping with a flagship snapdragon SOC so it won't be a budget device. Maybe a future model though.

I think most of those other features are a long shot as well. The GOS team hasn't really specified any preferences for non-security related features and I doubt Motorola would suddenly change their hardware design/direction.

  • Interesting podcast on this subject: https://srslywrong.com/podcast/ep-346-does-parenting-make-you-more-conservative/

The conclusion they come to is that becoming more conservative with age generally only applies to low information apolitical people who are sort of vaguely left leaning when they're young. As they age they become more entrenched in the system, acquire more wealth, etc, and those vaguely conservative ideas they had in the back of their minds become more pronounced. There's also the overton window shifts that may mean someone who thought of themselves as vaguely liberal in the past may now consider themselves socially conservative in the current climate.

  • Not a vegan but if you think what happens to cows is a medical "treatment" then you are a dumbass

  • If the recipient asked for it and the donor is giving it out of free will

    ...and it's medically indicated

  • Victim blaming is victim blaming. Kindly fuck off with your smooth ass car brained bullshit.

  • The OP on Reddit literally admits they didn't look at the crossing in their post lol and this is what we're focusing on? In the fuck cars community? Watch the video. There's no way that would have played out any differently even in broad daylight. And no amount of vigilance would have helped that pedestrian.

  • Literally "look at what she was wearing. She was asking for it!"

Obviously, it's a good idea to look out for giant hulking death machines when your environment is crawling with them. That in no way means the blame should be focused on the victims of the death machines. Fucking car brains.

Also I just watched the video and I would be very surprised if that situation would have been any different even in broad daylight. Cars regularly make turns like that without looking for pedestrians at all. The OP even admits that they didn't look properly at the crossing in the post.
