  • It is quite a struggle to make meaning in an uncaring universe, I agree. But if it's any consolation, we're all in the same boat, looking for an answer. (Are we human or are we Dancer?)

  • I'm sorry to come on so strong -- I don't think it's worse than useless as a tool to approach the right answers -- but as I saw people upvoting this 'answer' without doing any checking, it occurs to me that this is how misinformation spreads. I hope my comment makes more sense in that context.

  • It's an edge-case for sure. There is nothing wrong with having hairy pits in public, in general. As others have said, it's completely normal for students to wear pajamas to most lectures. And if you had worn it to a large lecture hall with ~200 other students, probably no one would notice or care. Vs. wearing swimwear or something which would definitely seem odd.

However, this particular professor noticed it and said something, so unless you want to battle with them, probably better to just respect their wishes and not wear one.

The interesting thing with the other comment comparing it to a woman wearing a swimsuit with pubic hair showing: first of all I don't consider armpit hair to be in the same category as pubic hair, and not the same thing if it shows in public. Even so, there is nothing illegal about having visible pubic hair showing outside of a swimsuit, but it does defy a social expectation of female beauty standards, just like a woman having visible armpit hair or body of any kind. So for someone to show either risks getting pushback at the beach for how people ought to look, even if it isn't anyone's business. Because it also extends to "girls shouldn't dye their hair green," "girls shouldn't have short hair," etc., it's all social expectations and conformity, just to different degrees.

For you as a male, visible armpit hair might defy some people's expectations as what is "polite" to show in a serious environment like college. Some other professors might not like pajamas either, but they know that ship has sailed. It is up to you how much you want to self-censor to "go a long to get along" vs show up how you want to show up and push the boundaries of society.

What are the best options for computers that explicitly support linux operating systems?

I am typing this post on a modern "Thinkpad" from 2020 where the hardware volume keys could never change the volume on Linux. But everything works more or less correctly in Windows 11, unfortunately.

What are my options for getting computer hardware, desktop or laptop (etc.), where the hardware is specifically supported under linux?

Let's say I am wanting to plot a graph with "Usefulness" on the Y axis and "Cost" on the X axis. Then I could plot each computer on the graph, and make a decision about how much money to save up and spend for the best value that satisfied minimum requirements.

In my initial searching, I have uncovered these vendors as supporting Linux, albeit at a (usually) premium, niche price point:

    • System76
    • Framework
    • Dell
    • IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad

However I don't yet have a good intuition for when this is true (for example my thinkpad having incompatible hardware) or where these belong on the hypothetical usefulness vs. cost plot.

Also, as I understand it, linux d

Does Google scan yt videos to know what products appear in them?

Ok, so. Earlier today I was watching the Technology Connections video about how Power is energy over time. In the video he shows a picture of an Anker Solix powerbank to illustrate the concept of energy storage. I've never seen or heard of this product before.

An hour later I'm reading an article on Lemmy, and there is an ad for that same powerbank.

What explains this? Some explanations I can think of:

    1. Random chance.
    2. Google scans YouTube videos for information about what products appear in them, and knows that I watched the video, and that I'm the same person now reading the article. It then gives this information to everyone in the ad-selling marketplace, so the Anker ad company can bid high to show me an ad.
    3. Google is observing what appears on my screen in order to sell this info to advertisers.

I think 2 is most likely given Occam's Razor, but I didn't think Google scanned yt videos like this.

    Is there something I'm missing?

I was watching on an Android phone, on T

Do zinc tablets and toothpaste counteract each other in the mouth?

I brushed my teeth and then dissolved a zinc tablet in my mouth.

Afterwards I wondered, would the F- ion in the toothpaste combine with the Zn2+ ion in the tablet, which is not very soluble in water, and would neutralize both the teeth hardening and cold-fighting properties?

It says on the zinc bottle not to drink citrus juices but I cannot find any reliable information online that explains why.

Is there any negative consequence to wearing socks inside out?

    Ok hear me out.

I've never worn normal socks inside out because it's so easy to get them into the correct orientation. But I have a whole bunch of toe socks now, and the easiest way to take them off is by peeling them off, which leaves them inside out at the end.

I've been righting them and washing them, but it adds quite an annoyance as for every n socks it adds n time.

So I am wondering can I just get away with wearing them inside out half the time?

Potential downsides I've already though of:

    • It might look dumb
    • It might wear out the fuzzy side faster than normal.

Let's say those are both a price I'll willing to pay. Is there anything else I haven't thought of? Does anybody have personal experience or cultural knowledge in this regard?

Edit: this is all very good information. Thank you, I'll try it out for a few days.

Does having to drive make you less likely to go places?

I live in an ideal part of the suburbs. I'm close to my work, school, the swimming pool, the grocery store, etc.,. In many instances, the scooter is more consistently faster than driving and finding parking.

    Commute times (door to door):

     undefined

           : Work : School : Grocery : Swimming Pool
    Walk : 40 min : 15 min : 25 min : 15 min
    Bike : 15-20 : 5-10 : 15 min : 5 min
    Scooter: 10-15 : 5 min : 10 min : 3 min
    Car : 5-10 : 5-10 : 5-10 : 5 min

My problem is, I really need to make changes in life, like go to the swimming pool more often even in winter; get a better job which will be farther away. I think I'm putting these off because I don't want to drive.

All of these will be easier if I just embrace driving my car more. I can take groceries more easily. I can carry more swim equipment and I won't get so cold coming home from the pool. But I don't like driving because I feel like I'm a greater danger to myself and others, even though I'm a pretty
