  • I was already semi remote at the time so I only went to the office 2-3 times a week. I was home at the time when it was announced that offices will be temporarily closed down, so I was like 🤷, didn’t really matter much. The only thing special I did was go to the office to get my office chair. Then the scramble to buy masks because they weren’t readily available at the time.

  • I've seen documentaries of Adam Crasper. Terrible thing done by the adoptive parents. They thought they can just go to SK, pick up a kid they like, and just bring them over; not even putting in the effort to figure out the paperwork needed. He ultimately ended up in Mexico because it was more familiar to him due to growing up with latino friends than SK.

  • I posted this comment on another thread before:

The 3 most common options are through:

    • Work - you need a company based in your destination country to sponsor you. Apply for jobs that offer sponsorship and relocation support. Or work for a company in your country that has an office in your desired destination, and ask to be relocated.
    • Education - attend university in your desired destination.
    • Marriage - fall in love with a citizen of your desired destination and get married. - Obviously this does not apply in your case.

You’ll have to get in through a visa based on the above categories, then apply for permanent residency once you’re in. Only after a few years of being a permanent resident can you apply for citizenship. Note that this can take years depending on the category and the country you’re from.

As for the license-to-practice thing, make sure to do your research on the requirements in your destination country, because it might be easier if you already have some credentials on the get-go; or you might need to actually earn credits there an not just go for the exams. Also, you have to check if they even recognize the licenses that you get in the US, otherwise it will be a waste. Good luck.

  • Hard agree. Bidet + soap is the most hygienic way. I was actually surprised to learn that even some bidet users don’t use soap and literally just blast their ass and hope it washes away everything. You’re already halfway there, might as well use soap and be completely clean.

  • I do several rounds as well and I can tell you washing with soap and water using a bidet is much milder than wiping yourself raw with toilet paper. Washing once per round also takes the same amount of time as wiping several times until you feel “clean”.

  • I’ve been distro hopping for 15+ years but have settled with Mint for the last few, because I just want something that works. I’m too busy nowadays to bother with maintaining a distro, so I just want something that works out of the box and is easy to maintain. The laptop I use it on is connected to the TV as I use it to watch movies.

  • Not super crazy and this was a long time ago, but there was a guy who was just around 3 months with the company who was causing a ruckus.

We only knew about it because he went live on social media while he was at the reception floor of the building claiming the company was engaged in fraud or something. It wasn't intelligible to be honest and I couldn't really understand what he was specifically accusing them of. I think he was fired on that day, and he went live shortly after he was told. He also claimed he was not being allowed to leave, but I think the reason was he refused to give up the company mobile phone that was issued to him, claiming it contained evidence and he wanted to take it with him.

I never heard anything about it since, and I don't know what happened to the guy and if the claims were true.

Lemmy app that works on older IOS devices

Does anyone know of a lemmy app that’s backward compatible and works on older IOS devices? I have an older iPad running IOS 12.5.7. Obviously I can just use the browser or a webapp but I wanted to check if there was an app.

I was able to install Liftoff before but it has stopped working since.

    Dashcam recommendations

So I already have a front dashcam (Blueseasky) and it's fine, does what it's supposed to. I want to upgrade to a dual-camera (front and back facing) dashcam, similar to the ones used on rideshares, but something that can be mounted on the actual dashboard. I want to avoid running wires along the headliner and frame, so I prefer to mount my dashcam on the actual dash.

It works for my current dashcam because it's cylinder shaped and the camera lens can be rotated. So I just use a small square of 3M automotive tape to mount it, rotate the lens so it’s angled correctly, then just let the wire run down the side of the infotainment screen and into the 12V port.

Can anyone recommend a good dual-cam dashcam that is flexible enough to adjust the angle of both cameras while it is mounted on the dashboard? Most of the ones I've seen are designed to be mounted on the windshield, so the front-facing camera is typically fixed and faces the road correctly only if it's mounted there. The only way I

When fighter jets are scrambled to intercept a plane, what can they actually do?

Are they basically just there to shoot down the plane before causes larger casualties by crashing into a heavily populated area? I can't imagine what else a jet can do to a large commercial aircraft in the air.

Why does my iPhone give a privacy warning on my wifi's 5G band only?

I have two SSIDs on my home wifi, one for the 2.4GHz band and one for the 5G band. I noticed that my phone is giving me a Privacy Warning ("This network is blocking encrypted DNS traffic"), but only when connected to the 5G network. I use Mullvad's DoH profile on my phone and my router also points to Mullvad as the DNS provider. As far as I can tell, both networks are configured the same, except for the 2.5GHz network having an extra 20/40 MHz Coexistence setting (that is enabled). And even then, I don't understand how my network is blocking encrypted DNS traffic, let alone only on one band. Anyone have an idea what's going on?

EDIT: Never mind, I rebooted my phone and it went away. We had an ISP outage and my phone just connected to my network after it was restored, so I guess there was some random bug.

Thoughts on the potential Fox trade?

    cross-posted from: https://lemm.ee/post/54029762

I like Fox but I feel like he's not a good fit for the Spurs right now. He's in the win-now stage of his career and it doesn't align with the current Spurs timeline. Sure, Wemby kinda accelerates that, but the rest of the team needs to catch up first. It might also hinder Castle's development. Playstyle-wise, I think it can work, although Fox isn't that good of a shooter. What do you guys think?

Using Mango router to use VPN for TV

So I have a Samsung TV that uses Tizen OS, which unlike an Android TV, is very limited with customization. I've been trying to figure out how to get the TV into my vpn and I discovered the Mango Router by GL.inet. It's basically a small travel router that allows you to use openvpn or wireguard to set up VPN. I figured this might be a good workaround to get my TV and other devices that don't support the mullvad client into my VPN. And if you're wondering why I don't just set up vpn on my primary router, I work from home and my company's systems trigger alerts when they detect logins coming from known VPN IPs, so I don't want to just pass all my traffic at home through my vpn. I'm also afraid of flashing my router and bricking it lol.

My question is, does anyone know if this use-case will work? I'll essentially set up mullvad on the Mango router (the docs say mullvad is supported), connect the Mango to my primary router, then connect any

No hot water coming out on 1 faucet only

First time homeowner here so please forgive the newbie question. I'm in Texas so our houses aren't built for the cold. We're going through freezing temps at night right now, with temps getting up well above freezing during the day. I woke up this morning to my kitchen faucet not having water (at all) when turning it to the hot setting. It's the type of faucet that you just turn left (hot) and right (cold) and lift to open. The cold water side is fine. The two other faucets found in the two bathrooms have hot water without issues, but they have separate faucets for hot and cold. I've been religiously dripping all our faucets every night since last week. Is it possible something froze? And what I can do to start figuring out the problem and possibly fix myself?

    Thanks in advance!

Edit: Here's what it looks like under the sink. The upper left tube is what I believe is the hot water, the right for cold, and the bottom goes to the dishwasher.

Investing in S&P 500. Which broker to use?

I'm a complete newbie. The only "investing" I've ever done is use HYSAs. Obviously the yield there, while pretty good, isn't as good as investing in say, the S&P 500. So I want to invest a chunk of my savings into that and just leave it there until I retire. I'm not really looking into daily/active trading or anything. The problem is I don't know how fees work with brokers.

I saw this graph a while ago so I was thinking of Fidelty. It also helps that I already have an account there for my employer RSUs and my 401k. On the other hand, a colleague of mine suggested Schwab and said they don't have any fees.

Can anyone suggest the best broker (minimal/no fees, easy-to-use, set-and-forget) that I should go with if I just want to invest in the S&P 500?

Best way to automatically silence notifications at a specific time frame while already in Focus

This needs to be explained a bit, so here's my problem:

    • I use Focus for sleeping. I manually enable it when I go to bed and disable it when I wake up.
    • My Focus setting disables notifications for email, calendar, and some messaging apps.
    • My security camera app notifications are not disabled, obviously because I want to be alerted if something triggers it in the middle of the night.
    • However, there is a certain time in the morning between 7:30AM and 8AM where people walking on the sidewalk triggers alerts that wake me up. And no, I want to avoid not pointing my cameras away from that part of the sidewalk because it helps me catch people letting their pets pee and poop on my yard.
    • I usually wake up at 8AM and getting woken up 30 minutes earlier is annoying.
    • I am willing to accept the risk of not getting notifications from my cameras on my phone for 30 minutes before I wake up.

What is the most practical way to disable notifications from an app on a scheduled time duration whi

How to choose mutual funds to invest in

I've been on an HSA+HDHP for a couple of years now and only realized recently the interest earned from investing HSA money is also tax free, so I want to start investing a part of my savings and see how it goes. I have 2 options, Betterment or Mutual Funds. I figured I'd try the latter to avoid fees, but I'm not sure which funds to choose. My HSA currently provides 30 fund options.

I see people mentioning Vanguard a lot so I spread out my initial investment into 25% chunks across 4 different Vanguard funds. How did I choose them? Well I literally just looked at the performance graphs and selected the ones that historically went up steadily without major dips. As a total noob, how can I improve my choices? Is there a simple way to decide without having to dive deep into the stock market?
