  • Good news - Firefox is actively developing built-in PWA functionality right now. There's a discussion thread I'll link you to when I find it.

EDIT - here you go, this also has links to further discussions: https://connect.mozilla.org/t5/discussions/how-can-firefox-create-the-best-support-for-web-apps-on-the/m-p/60561#U60561

There's already a VERY early version in FF Nightly, but tbh it doesn't yet really do anything you'd expect of a PWA.

    Info on that: https://connect.mozilla.org/t5/discussions/how-can-firefox-create-the-best-support-for-web-apps-on-the/m-p/60561#U60561

  • I find (and I'm only talking about myself here, not anyone else) that sports often seem boring until I know a little about the context and nuance of them.

Cricket - always thought it was boring until I worked at the 2019 Men's World Cup and started to notice the little things, understand the various rivalries, get a sense of the reason why a particular moment was tense/important, etc. I love it now (while certainly not claiming to fully uinderstand it) - will happily sit and watch a 5-day Test and just immerse myself in it, it's almost like a state of meditation.

Darts - thought it was ok on TV, but when I actually went to a darts match (not expecting much) I had an absolute blast, with the atmosphere, chanting, tension, etc. Beer too, of course, but it wasn't just that.

Rugby League - had no interest at all until a mate asked if I fancied going to Magic Weekend (a 2-day event where multiple matches are played in the same stadium, one after the other) - he's a Hull fan, so immediately that gave me someone to root for, and I found it a lot more interesting and enjoyable than I had expected.

I think sports can sometimes be very offputting when they're completely new, as the existing fans often already seem intimidatingly knowledgeable, and there's a fear of doing or saying the wrong thing. I think finding even just one thing to care about (even if it's totally arbitrary - like, "Ok, I hope that team scores X points today" or whatever) can help give some purpose and interest can grow from there.

That being said, I've no interest in ever watching Polo, so... ;-)

  • it ruins the flow of the game

Only if you're expecting it to flow like rugby or football.

It may look like them, but you should think of it more like tennis or cricket - a series of self-contained contests within a larger battle. The stoppages are part of the game and they're meant to be.

That doesn't mean you have to like it, of course, but expecting it to flow is just setting it up to fail.

  • Sorry, I completely missed this - thanks for the detailed answer. Sounds like Sanders needs to get some perspective!

  • I'm only vaguely following the Sanders story and the Draft generally. Is there something wrong with him that is making teams not want him? He was a big favourite for #1 pick at one point, so what has changed?

EDIT - for anyone with the same question I just saw this discussion, could be relevant: https://lemmy.ca/post/42942962

  • I think it depends what the button function is - if it's to go to the social channel of the business whose website you're on, I agree the Contact Us page is the place for them.

However I think OP is talking about the type that is intended to share the current webpage onto the user's own socials. That wouldn't fit on Contact Us, except to share the contact us page :-)

Agreed about designers doing what everyone else does, but I'd add to that, that it may be client-driven - a lot of clients I've worked with see these things on other sites and so assume that they need them too. Even if the designer wanted to remove them, the client would likely insist 😁

  • Always preferred Hartbeat to Art Attack. Buchanan was just a bit creepy. Plus, no Morph.

Also, was there not a story that those jumpers NB wore cost about £300 or something?

  • Ooh, this sounds cool, will check that out. Thanks for sharing 👍

  • Maybe at the top, but the race for the CL spots in England is wild.

3 spots left (I'm assuming Arsenal and of course Liverpool have theirs down up already) between 5 teams, with only 3 points covering them.

It's really hard to predict between Forest Newcastle, Man City, Chelsea and Villa. Going to be an exciting run in!

  • I'm not from there, but I really enjoyed reading that nonetheless. Different people and different childhood memories for me, of course, but the core feelings are very relatable. Looking back at happy times can be really hard, especially if there's a sadness attached in some way.

I hope you do get to visit sometime soon with your daughter, and make some new memories :-)

TIL that not only is Measles very dangerous in itself but it also strips away and resets much/most of your immune system.

So, even if you had been immune, through previous illness, vaccination or via maternal milk, you may not be anymore after having measles.

I had never heard this until today, and it's an absolutely horrifying thought.

    You're welcome.

Referee David Coote suspended over video of foul-mouthed Klopp rant

    Well, that's a bit awkward...

"Coote was the video assistant referee when a challenge by the Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford on Virgil van Dijk that left the Liverpool defender with an anterior cruciate ligament injury went unpunished."

"Coote also drew the ire of Klopp as the VAR for the 1-1 draw between Liverpool and Arsenal last December after an apparent handball in the box by Martin Ødegaard did not lead to a penalty."

Is it possible to group favourited communities or users into a single feed?

Per this thread, I'm wondering if it might be possible to create feeds of favourited people or communities.

I guess this would be similar to how multireddits worked and since that's not available on Lemmy, this might not be either. But maybe some smart person out there knows of a way.

It's not even me that wants to do it, but I'm invested in an answer now! :-)

Question about Firefox - any way to open specific sites as if they were an app or program (similar to an option in Chrome)?

I've decided (after seeing the advice repeatedly!) to try and move away from Chrome and use FF instead. However I've immediately come across an issue which is a bit of a deal-breaker for me, and although I've looked into it, I haven't seen an answer anywhere.

One of the best features in Chrome is the abilty to create a shortcut for an individual URL. This shortcut can then be placed on the desktop, start menu or quicklaunch toolbar (Win 10) and opened as if it were a program in its own right - so, no URL bar, no tabs, no bookmarks, just the site content.

I use this method every day for a number of different sites - Outlook, Gmail, Calendar, Keep, Sheets, Docs, etc, and it's perfect. So much so that I usually forget that I'm technically opening all of these in Chrome at all, not least because the site favicon shows in the taskbar in place of the browser logo.

So, I assumed that FF would be able to do the same thing... but apparently not. Am I missing something? I've found people disc

YSK: It's possible to get search results from Google without the annoying 'AI' answers at the top

Already getting sick of seeing 'AI' results at the top of a search when all you want is a link to a site?

I just discovered this article showing a way to not see it (although it doesn't disable it altogether).

    TLDR:

    • In Chrome open settings menu, choose Search engine on left menu and scroll down to site search
    • Click Add button and choose a name (eg Old Google, Google Web or whatever)
    • Add a shortcut word (eg web, og, or whatever)
    • Add this URL string: https://www.google.com/search?q=%25s&udm=14
    • Save that, and now if you search for something and use the shortcut word you set you'll just get proper results, no 'AI' shown
    • Or, if you don't want to have to add a shortcut word, you just make that search your default (use the 3 dot menu next to the name you set) and all searches will show that way, no shortcut word needed.

(Win 10) Move all windows of a single programme to a different screen?

Just wondering if anyone knows of a way to do this?

Here's my use case in more detail

I have a laptop and a PC, with the laptop connecting to one of my 2 monitors via an HDMI splitter. This allows me to use my PC on both screens most of the time, but then quickly switch one monitor to show the laptop, when required.

Only thing is that doing that causes all PC windows* on Screen 2 to jump to Screen 1, while Screen 2 now shows the laptop's windows. That's fine, and I get why it does that (effectively the PC thinks I've disconnected Screen 2).

(usually it's a bunch of Chrome windows, 5-7 of them - for work/multi-client reasons this works best for me and my PC handles it fine)

When I switch the HDMI splitter back, all PC windows remain on Screen 1, while Screen 2 is once again showing my PC desktop, but with no windows. Ideally all windows would flip back to where they were before, but I don't think there's a way to do this, and again, that's fine.

    My next preferred option is

    To Norway: An Apology

Sorry Norway. Our jammy win in Oslo robbed you of a chance to experience a major tournament. Instead, your place went to a badly organised rabble, with no urgency, no ambition and not even basic ball control.

You should have been in this tournament, and that disgraceful excuse for a Scotland team should have been languishing in 3rd or 4th. How in god's name did we beat Spain?

    Sorry Norway, you deserved better.

    Scotland qualification scenarios

Of limited interest, I'm sure, but I spent a bit of time working all this out, and wanted to post it before Scotland go 2 down after 5 minutes tomorrow and render it all moot...

    So.

If Scotland lose to Hungary, we're out. No ifs, buts, or maybes.

If we draw then we need at least 2 out of 3 scenarios to happen in order to sneak through:

    • Spain beat Albania AND Italy beat Croatia
    • Turkey beat Czechia AND Portugal beat Georgia
    • Denmark beat Georgia AND England beat Slovenia by 5 or more (I think)

If Scotland win against Hungary then any 2 (or more) of these scenarios gets us through

    • Spain avoid defeat to Albania (Scotland would finish better than Albania and also better than one of Croatia or Italy, regardless of their result)
    • Netherlands beat Austria (Scotland would be ahead of both Austria and Poland)
    • England avoid defeat to Slovenia (Scotland would be ahead of Slovenia and also at least one of Denmark or Serbia).
    • There's also the possibility that Slovenia hammer

Gibralter v Scotland Euro 2024 warm up friendly

Come on Scotland fans, let's get this community up and running in advance of Scotland's forthcoming run to becoming European champions!

0' - Game has just kicked off, 0-0
15' - Decent start, couple of really good chances already for Hanley and Forrest, both probably should have been buried.
30' - Scotland in control, but can't get a shot on target.
HT - Same old Scotland, never scoring...
58' - GOAL! Christie slams it home after getting into a bit of a fankle with Shankland (a shankle? A fankland?) Nice ball in by Robertson too.
85' - GOAL! Adams. I didn't see it, but apparently it was a good one 👍

Feature suggestion - enable swiping between multiple photos in a post/comment

    Example post: https://lemmy.world/post/14058825

I've no idea if this is technically possible at all, but on posts like the one above, where multiple images have been added, it would be really handy to be able to swipe between them as if they were in a gallery. At present it's a case of open one, close it, open the next, etc...

Same for comments, not sure if that would be different than posts.
