  • No, that is not what he said at all.

  • Another common example would be graphite as it is just small "sheets" of carbon. It what makes graphite perfect for pencils and also as a lubricant.

  • Nope. It was the anti-war bit as its definition is twisted as "misinformation" which is subject to more crackdowns right now.

  • That's the joke, kind of. ;)

But an assault rifle is real, it's just not available for the general public. (Unless Arizona, I think? Their laws are a bit different when it comes to full auto.)

  • Don't buy an assault rifle. Get an AR-15.

  • "real" is subjective.

  • I guess you are saying that everyone on Lemmy is on the spectrum. That kinda tracks..

  • Nah. Take it with you and take a long another bottle of something stronger. You're gonna need it.

  • And that is scary. If the is one takeaway from observing the universe it's that there are always bigger and stranger things out there somewhere.

  • Something tells me this isn't a bad thing. If there is an edge of the universe, it's probably going to be a very strange place.

  • I taught myself QuickBasic as it was the only thing I knew that was related to copying C64 BASIC out of magazines. (QBasic was packaged with DOS 3.11 I think and I was able to get a full copy of QuickBasic somehow. That was about +30 years ago? Dunno. I was about 12 at the time.) I didn't know what other languages were out there besides TurboPascal. I did learn simple Pascal, but that was a short chapter.

I actually met someone else in the area that was learning to code, and of course, we wanted to write a game. The only way to code for a mouse at the time was to write an INT33 handler, so it kicked off our interest in asm. (I still use asm for MCU stuff on occasion, but it's limited.) I quickly diverged into writing some really nifty.. eh.. "boot sector code" so that kicked off my career in security.

And yeah, it's the same phenomenon for me: I just think in terms of bits and bytes getting shifted around and I still refuse to believe in "magic". (Slight jab at Rust coders there, but in good fun.)

Fast forward to today, I train "kids" fresh out of college as part of my job now. The first thing I do is start giving them weird tasks that require they actually understand how something like an fopen() actually works.

(Funny story. I refused to "show my work" in math class for simple f(x) problems as I viewed it as unoptimized code. Lulz. I was such an autistic dork.)

  • That, 200%!

When I started in computers, years ago, I transitioned from QuickBasic directly into assembly. Ever since then, I can kinda "read the Matrix" (Blond, Brunette, Redhead....) and forget about how confusing a raw binary or how a mess of a dmp looks to someone else. (To me, I really just see patterns and nothing massively complicated.)

"It's just data." - You would be surprised how fuzzy that statement is for some people. It's almost exactly like telling someone who doesn't speak any English that "the sky is blue". It's totally cool though! Learning about the internals of any computer is really just a very long chain of "aha moments" as many concepts aren't intuitive.

  • Fuck cars.

  • This is a clip from 2013 posted on YouTube: https://youtu.be/ebCTq8SqiZM

The dragon fucking cars thing has been around for longer than that.

  • Fuck cars.

  • Yeah, another minute or so and I wouldn't consider that car safe for work either.

  • Secrets

  • I would look into something like Doppler instead of Vault. (I don't trust any company acquired by IBM. They have been aquiring and enshittifying companies before there was even a name for it.)

Look into how any different solutions need their keys presented. Dumping the creds in ENV is generally fine since the keys will need to be stored and used somehow. You might need a dedicated user account to manage keys in its home folder.

This is actually a host security problem, not generally a key storage problem per se. Regardless of how you have a vault setup, my approach here is to create a single host that acts as a gateway for the rest of the credentials. (This applies to if keys are stored in "the cloud" or in a local database somewhere.)

Since you are going to using a Pi, you should focus on that being a restricted host: Only run your chosen vault solution on it. Period. Secure and patch it to the best of your ability and use very specific host firewall rules for minimum connectivity. Ie: Have one user for ssh in and limit another user account to managing vault, preferably without needing any kind of elevated access. This is actually a perfect use case for SELinux since you can put in some decent restrictions on the host for a single app (and it's supporting apps...)

If you are paranoid enough to run a HIDS, you can turn on all the events for any type of root account actions. In theory once the host is configured, you shouldn't need root again until you start performing patches.

  • I was wondering if this was ever going to be done due to how much AI investment is floating around. It kinda makes more sense for many of the shitty AI projects that have been proposed over the last few years.

  • I dump memory more often than you would think. It's usually not obfuscated or encrypted in any meaningful way even though it is fairly trivial to do so.

It's good practice to scour through any bloatware installed on windows laptops. Since bloatware is generally written by the lowest bidder, you can find all kinds of keys and phone-home urls (sometimes with all the parameters) and other weird things. Just fire up a decent hex editor and search for strings in the dump file. You don't need to know jack about reverse engineering either.

  • It would force everyone who still wanted to use Facebook to upload more fresh data and get hooked again in the process. It's not a relevance play. It's a "we want all your new data" play.

"Tag as" for communities (or instances?)

Originally, I just wanted to request tagging specific instances as NSFW. This would be helpful for posters on specific instances that do not always tag posts as NSFW but still should get caught by our NSFW preferences.

NSFW isn't always porn so the NSFW filter catches a bit much, sometimes. Excluding specific communities from the NSFW filter is an option, but that gave me yet another idea.

Expanding on this idea, it would be cool to start categorizing communities with tags, like "sports" or "news", "world news" or something arbitrary like "neat".

This would allow filtering by what kinds of content I want to view at any given time, in theory. Hell, we could even start building a master list to share for community categories in GitHub or something like that.

Top post in feed (randomly?) gets stuck 50%-60% off the top of the screen

Time seems to cause this more than anything else and I cannot replicate at-will. (I have actually been trying to catch the condition that causes this for a few months, but finally gave up today.)

Backing out from other communities will sometimes trigger this, but not always. I have only noticed this on c/all. If it seems I have been in one community for a "bit of time" and have locked/unlocked my phone a couple of times, the chance of this occuring seems higher. (That theory is kinda bullshit, but it's something)

Reloading the feed from the main menu clears the condition. (I haven't checked if a standard feed refresh works after the last couple of updates. It usually hasn't worked.)

Scroll about 20-30 posts, and refresh is pressed, feed will become blank. Opening menu and selecting feed is the only way to restore it.

Weird "all" feed blanking bug. This is more likely to happen if the 20-30 thumbnails have not completed load.

Feed will hang at after scrolling through ~100 posts

This seems to be related to thumbnails that aren't fully loaded, but not always?

    1. When scrolling fast and preventing thumbnails from fully loading, I can get the feed to temporarily hang until it finishes loading loading some thumbnails.
    2. I will eventually hit a "feed limit" when scrolling through the feed to ~100 posts.
    3. Sometimes, slowly scrolling back up the feed to allow unloaded thumbnails to finish may "unblock" the feed for a bit, but not always. It may load one or two additional posts, and hang again.

There seem to be multiple conditions causing the feed to pause vs completely hang, and I can't nail those conditions down.

This issue has gotten much better since 219, but is still a bit quirky.

You can scroll to the end of the feed cache/buffer; Will not load additional posts until previous posts thumbnails complete loading.

This is an odd problem to describe.

I can scroll through about 20 posts and then the feed will "hang". Once those 20 or so posts finish loading thumbnails, additional older posts will be loaded.

This is not as noticeable on fast connections, but causes significant lag on slow connects. There is no immediate indicator that Connect is still loading newer post data when you hit the end of the feed cache/buffer. (It feels like feeds have been split into "pages" and after 20 or so posts, there is a delay when hitting another "page".)

Thanks for attempting to read this shitty description of a problem. I tried.

Edit: The feed will actually get "stuck" sometimes. It's common for me on "all". I had 800mb in cache and just cleared it. It's got a little better for some reason. I can get close to 50-60 posts before the feed pauses or hangs.

Saving a post edit triggers server error; After the server error, last feed (ie All) is blank and requires manual refresh.

I am going to edit this post and get some screenshots. (Done)

Note: Backing out of this post, after navigating to this post, via my profile, triggered the "blank feed" issue again. (See blank screenshot in comments.)

    Your friends will change.

A key point of many recovery programs is to separate yourself from your drinking buddies, which is probably the most difficult thing for anyone in any situation. It's something I still deal with in some ways: Drinking friends are extremely easy to find. Real friends absolutely do not show up everyday.

I was just thinking about some of the people this morning that I just don't have the need to associate with anymore. There are two that I still occasionally hang out with, but there was a deeper friendship besides booze from the start.

If you are having this problem now, it gets better over time, I promise. It may take a couple of years to learn life again, but you can heal. In retrospect, having much more time on my hands just made the initial loneliness much worse.

My friends changed but also the reasons to hangout with other people also changed. This took time for me to understand. What matters to me personally has slowly morphed over these last few years and that is reflected in w

Navigating comment threads is extremely broken / Combined issues

Edit: This is a weird thread, and might be a one-off. Maybe I have one of those users blocked and it's hiding the rest of the thread? I dunno, and I'll check. // It doesn't appear that I have any of those users blocked.

After opening my profile history, I can open a thread in my profile view. Clicking into a reply comment takes me to my comment on the post.

I cannot see the full comment thread when I view the full posts history on a post and trying to actually get to new comments is like trying finding the exit at IKEA.

Basically, I can't navigate to a thread to reply, and I had an awesome snarky comment prepared, but forgot it trying to get there.

Navigation behavior is so strange, either I have developed pre-release Alzheimer's, or Connect is bugged. (I don't discount either scenario.)

Opening a post seems to trigger thumbnail refresh, creating some nasty lag.

After a post is clicked, it seems that all thumbnails are forced to refresh. (Attached image shown immediately after a click)

Also, what may just be the result of a cache clear, doom scrolling seems to cause a similar lag after scrolling past +50 posts. Thumbnail loading becomes laggy, but not sure if related to the issue above.

When the lag starts, Connect will lag fairly bad for as long as a minute. I have also turned off image preload, but that had no effect.

Side bug, changing the title in the new post edit cleared my first post body.

Is there a scripting language for building logic gate logic?

Weird title, sorry. Let me try and explain.

Goal: Convert simple higher level script into a low level logic gate mess. Basically, I want to build my own custom computers in Factorio with circuit networks. I can easily create any type of logic gate that I want, similar to how computers Minecraft have been built, but with more options.

It would be super nice to code in something similar to Python but have it "compile" into clusters of logic gates. Of course, functionality would be extremely limited, but that is OK and I don't need to boil the ocean.... yet...

(TBH, this sounds really close to what I know about programming FPGAs.)
