  • Here's the Side of Burritos video with two followup videos in the description (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzpVI4zaso0)

I don't really know much about it to be honest, and the video is pretty old, and someone in the comments says the issue is fixed but I haven't seen that anywhere else. I just use Obtanium anyway since you can get most FOSS apps from GitHub, a for ones that don't, you can still find F-Droid apps. SideOfBurritos also has a more recent video about how to set up and use Obtanium if you're interested.

  • Welcome to the fold!

Just a heads up, GOS doesn't recommend the F-droid app as apparently there's some security concerns. SideOfBurritos on YouTube talks more about it. An app like Droidify or Neo Store would be better and still uses the same F-Droid repositories. I use and really like Obtanium which allows you to download and manage apps directly from their websites, GitHub, F-Droid, & more.

  • Eat bolts clanker

  • Looks like they use both Open Addresses and NAD, a government-provided address database. Both appear free to download, but I don't know how easily it could be actually integrated into an app as I'm assuming that would require some time of API or something. I am also not a developer, just trying to figure out the best solution for navigation without giving all my data to Google. I did notice there's a "Custom Map Server" option in CoMaps settings, so maybe I could manually add something there? Not sure how that works though and maybe that overrides the default database instead of adding to it.

  • Yes this is what I was looking for, thanks!

Now is there any way to add this data to comaps? Specifically address data?

  • Do they publish a list anywhere? I'd love to see what they're using and see if I can get it into CoMaps somehow

  • I haven't noticed search being all that bad, there's just straight up missing data.

Also wouldn't the search function be fixed at an app level, not across all OSM?

  • Well the only solution I can see is for us to start manually adding everything we can find to OSM unless there's some way to import better data into OSM or CoMaps.

  • No, looks like they're not, except one I added in CoMaps, so that explains it.

How does Magic Earth have all those addresses then? There was even a restaurant I was looking for the other day that I found on Magic Earth but not CoMaps. Is Magic Earth's map data open-source or can that somehow be loaded into CoMaps?

  • CoMaps @sopuli.xyz

    Missing addresses and places

  • Return Pixel 7 to Amazon and start looking for used Pixels on Craigslist or FB Marketplace

  • As far as I know there's nothing that works in the US

  • Yeah I got a MagSafe case and started using a MagSafe wallet I had from when I was on iPhone so I usually just use my physical cards now. Would be nice to not have to worry about forgetting my wallet but oh well.

I'm pretty much completely on FOSS now and really the only thing I miss, other than G Pay and compatibility with what other people use, is Google Maps, but Magic Earth is decent.

  • Congrats! I made the switch a few months ago and haven't looked back. Highly recommend everyone switch to GrapheneOS, even if you still use Google Play Services or other Google apps (obviously trying to get away from those is always the right move but it isn't that simple for most people)

Now just wish Google Pay or some other contactless payment could work with it...

  • The coconut crab is objectively one of the most terrifying creators on God's green earth

  • Right that's what I meant about a "centralized" instance. I just think it would make things a lot easier if there was one "main" server that new users could easily be directed to, create and account, and view and discover content from lots of other instances.

The existence of instances like MakerTube I think provides a good platform for dedicated creators to go to at the moment, but it would be cool if again, there was a main instance that somehow allowed uploading to other instances.

  • Unfortunately I know absolutely nothing about development lol. I might look into creating a piefed account though just for these feeds which look really cool

  • This looks really cool! Is there any way to follow/subscribe to these feeds with a lemmy.world account? I feel like I already have so many Fediverse accounts which kind of goes against the point of the Fediverse lol.

  • I still think it would be best to just have a "centralised" Peertube instance that can list videos from many other instances that users can sign up to and easily discover a large catalogue of content. The issue with a Mastodon style app is it could also show other random videos from Mastodon and short form videos from platforms like Loops, and those are two different media categories from Peertube/YouTube content in my mind.

  • 100% agree with everything you say, I'm genuinely impressive how good Peertube is without the backing of a huge corporation. And I do love it as an option when regular people start getting tired enough of YouTube's enshitification.

My point is simply that in it's current state, Peertube isn't very friendly to new users and I think there's some pretty obvious steps that need to be taken before "regular" people will even start thinking about joining.

  • Peertube @lemmy.world

Disable notifications for an individual channel

  • Peertube @lemmy.world

current PeerTube can't compete with YouTube
