  • I don’t even care about flirting with women I just want a free app where I can practice speaking my second language with actual people and not some sanitized AI that doesn’t understand context or slang instead of watching cringe youtubers

Like Duolingo/genki or google translate doesn’t really capture おっす. Duolingo probably doesn’t bother with that kind of informal speech. Google just translates it as “hey”, which isn’t wrong, but it’s not really right either. Even deepl just translates it as yo!, which is much closer but still kind of not really it. It’s more like a sup brah kind of thing. Like a really masculine youthful colloquial greeting I guess is the best way to explain it.

    But not discord, fuck discord

  • This honestly makes so much more sense from an environmental standpoint. Why waste so much in terms of resources shipping hundreds of millions of pounds of sugar water every month so picky babies that refuse to drink water will pump more money into the coca cola empire so they can get type 2 diabetes as fast as possible. Instead just ship this little cup thing at 1/18th the weight and save so much gasoline, road wear and tear, etc.

Who am I kidding, they’ll just put this into plastic bottled water that’s been shipped from 3 states over

  • Sad to hear, my og one still runs fine but it’s old at this point from like 2014 or so

The polyscience is definitely a workhorse but it’s wild overkill for 99% of users. I will again point to I have a chinese no name one I’ve had for like 8 years now that has held up fine and was $13 from AliExpress because I wanted a backup. I have used it quite a bit for whenever I host a large meal and need to cook 2-3 baths at once

And honestly for what the polyscience costs you don’t get the value, imo. I have read people who have had them fail on the Chefsteps forums, it does happen. I don’t hold this against polyscience of course, failure is inevitable, but frankly for $1200 you should get a significant warranty period. You don’t get that, it’s like 12 or 24 months. If and when it breaks you’re hosed and on the hook for (very expensive, given brevilles track record) repairs

What you’re buying with polyscience is very strong power and a high degree of precision. The first point is why restaurants use them; if you’re preparing 30+ portions at once you need a circulator that can heat a significant amount of water. And to this point a lot of commercial kitchens doing this now use external heaters on the bath like this so that the circulator doesn’t need to be as powerful. The other thing polyscience does (or at least did) is higher precision on the thermocouple but this is unnecessary for culinary applications. It was necessary for laboratory circulators that they were making before this was popularized but with culinary applications you really just need accuracy within .1 degree C, which is not all that precise

  • This is simply not true

Modern meat is generally pretty safe and chicken tartare is definitely a thing. Is it something you should do if you are immunocompromised, a child, or elderly? Probably not. Is it something you should do if you are unsure of how the meat was handled? Probably not

But if you buy quality chicken from a trusted butcher, freeze the surface, blanch it for a few seconds, you can pretty safely eat it raw assuming you’ve done a good job keeping your surfaces and hands clean. You could probably do it with grocery store chicken tbh but the risks are much greater because you have no clue if the $12/hr kid packing chicken breasts properly washed their hands (handling is overwhelmingly where foodborne illness is going to come from in this scenario)

Is it going to be safe 100% of the time? No, of course not. But neither is eating medium rare steak, or eggs with runny yolks. But could you do this every day for a year with issue? Probably.

Although I wouldn’t necessarily consider this the same over the next 4 years of american deregulation

Raw chicken is kind of like scallops btw

  • So like fine, you have to review the whole state? Fine. But then address the other nonsense too. Address that tens of thousands of paper ballots were incompatible with machine counting and somehow had to be discarded even though they were easily human verifiable. Explain why these ballots were 3x more likely to be discarded in precincts that had a black majority.

Explain why NORC reviewed the ballots that voting machines rejected from the entire state and found it would’ve resulted in a gore win, albeit a very thin one

  • On the last point there is a precedent to not bother when the Supreme Court is stacked against you, and the Supreme Court of 2000 was outright balanced compared to the kook show of today

When George w won Florida under fairly suspect terms in 2000 gore pushed it a bit and probably should’ve pushed it more. The recount was sketch as fuck, the margin was literally like 500 votes for the entire state, it was later found that a bunch of counties never actually did the recount, George’s brother was the governor, his cousin at Fox News made the first call that Florida and the election went to him, just a lot of fuckery all around. And there was a lot more to it than that but that’s the stuff they couldn’t bring up in court for various reasons.

Gore pushed back and went to the Supreme Court with it and lost.

So say there was strong evidence beyond major statistical anomalies. Do you think the stacked court system isn’t going to do everything possible to shoot down anything possible to actually litigating it? The democrats are well aware the only chance they would possibly have is if they literally had the most airtight evidence known to man of fraud, like elon himself admitting fraud with all the receipts to back it up, and even then they’d probably hit some kind of roadblock

Anyway I think what people are referring to is this letter about bullet ballots:

    https://substack.com/home/post/p-151721941

It’s an interesting point that is unverifiable and could only be investigated by the current admin but see above. Given they only have about 5 hours left and frankly trump has been acting as president since he was elected anyway I don’t think it would matter even if the above was moot

  • Except using developer mode means you trade away support. Why pay all that money for a bambu if you’re not going to get support? Might as well build your own printer at that point if you’re going to have to problem solve all the issues yourself anyway

Also “This is beta testing, not a forced update”

Beta implies that at some point this will no longer be beta and will a mandatory update.

They’re testing the waters, thankfully the pushback may have them reconsidering. It probably just has them reconsidering the rollout/timing though. they may do something like Philips did with hue: announce the cloud integration into a product that did not require an internet connection or cloud integration for over a decade, get a bunch of backlash, then not implement the cloud part while the heat dies off while still fully intending to do so. The hue cloud was announced as a mandatory change in September of 2023 and still hasn’t been implemented but there is a reminder with each app update reminding you it’s eventually going to be necessary if you have not done it yet.

  • Rockstar are scumbags

Never drop prices, their sales are minimal unless the game is ancient, and they do digital only now

Plus the whole “remaster a game by turning up the resolution and frame rate then charging you 50 dollars” nonsense. In my day we called that a “settings menu option”

  • Sad to hear. I have the og version and it runs like a tank, the one with the big wheel. I never use the connectivity options

I can’t in good faith recommend a company that is hostile to their consumers, so fuck anova

  • Am therapist, haven’t had as much of this as I’ve had as much of just general existential anxiety lately

This is a part of that of course, but people seem to just generally be anxious that the world/society is going to be destroyed relatively soon, whether through war, global warming, pandemics, economic crash, etc.

    It’s a challenge

  • Very much this. They way it was explained to me was akin to what you are saying, single login, jump servers whenever. In practice it is not that

I’m a shitty developer by all measures but I assume such a feature would be tremendously difficult to implement especially this late in the game. Maybe I’m wrong but I don’t think so. Like would my username have to be reserved across all instances? Would a new instance have to get some kind of list of known usernames? Where would that even come from? Who knows, not me, that’s for sure

However if it could be done I think that would be a huge selling point. “Imagine if your server started being a shitty place like facebook and you could just move to another without having to nuke your account” is a pretty big deal

  • One guy I knew had a picture of himself giving finger guns as his background and whenever he unlocked his phone he would smirk at it like “oh you”

It wasn’t his lock screen either, just the home screen, so he knew it looked sketch

  • Anova is all around pretty good and should be available in the EU

That said these are simple machines. I’ve been using immersion circulators for cooking since around 2011 with a home built setup. They’re just a heater, a thermocouple, a relay, and a PID controller to adjust the temperature as needed based on input from the thermocouple. Don’t submerge it and it should last ages

Since then I’ve gotten a few proper ones and they all work about the same because they’re pretty simple. My anova works well but I also have a Chinese no name one that was $13 and works about as well. A bit harder to use as the controls are weird, it feels cheap, and it can’t do huge tubs of water like the anova can but that’s not common to utilize.

Whatever you buy make sure it’s somewhat easy to clean (generally you should still clean and dry it throughly after each use, especially so if you ever have a failure where the bath gets contaminated obviously) and look into how the stick mounts to whatever you plan to use as a vessel for the bath. I generally just use stockpots or whatever for shorter cooks but I also have the plastic tubs as well and some options don’t clip on to everything well, apparently

  • Mario games were always kind of tech demos for Nintendo innovation and the innovation is kind of boring now

In the 90s it was graphical fidelity and gameplay mechanics, smb1-3 on the nes, smw on snes, m64 were serious contenders for “oh my god this shit is crazy and plays like a dream”.

Sunshine is around where the graphical fidelity started to lag but the physics were still nice.

Then they started to innovate in other ways and galaxy brought in motion controls which were well done (arguably) and the (by then) distantly lagging graphics were almost a feature

But odyssey showed that doesn’t work anymore. Everyone has motion controls now, even phones, and they’re often just annoying. The switches innovation isn’t something that really applies directly to gameplay itself, so ultimately odyssey stays just a standard game, with solid graphics thanks to great design but noticeable slowdown in several areas because it’s running on an outdated tegra tablet, and the same old platformer gameplay because there’s nothing new to do with it.

They did have some cool level design that helped it feel fresh and interesting at times but it ultimately felt like it had similar problems to sunshine: not a bad game, but not an experience the way mario 64, mario world, or mario 3 was. Maybe I’m just too old

Also, is it possible to search within a community? I see the ability to search for communities and to search for posts but not to search for posts within a community. So sorry if this has been posted about, couldn’t figure that one out. Great app so far though!
