  • Move ‘em 2 millimeters in the wrong direction and you’ll have a bad time

Are you referring to getting, I dunno, yogurt in places outside the digestive tract?

My understanding was that gut bacteria play a pretty crucial (beneficial) role in overall health, not to mention the whole gut-brain stuff.

  • Or just a San Francisco resident --- these ads are everywhere on BART (+Muni I guess) right now. (As far as ads go, they're pretty good I guess --- and no, I don't even use them, much less work for them.)

  • For back-of-the-envelope or mental calculations, pi is often 3 or 10(1/2).

The latter is better than 1% accurate, and has nice properties when doing order-of-magnitude/log space calculations in base 10.

  • ZigBee router thing:

I've been happy with the SMLIGHT SLZB-06M. You can easily flash firmware, and it has PoE which was important for me. I believe it also supports Thread, but I haven't tried this yet (and I'm not sure if it supports it at the same time as Zigbee).

Zigbee smart plugs from Third Reality have been pretty solid in my experience, and they report power usage.

For circuit breaker level monitoring, I have an Emporia Vue2. I have it running esphome, completely local --- unfortunately this requires some simple soldering and flashing, so it's not turnkey. But it's been rock solid ever since flashing it. (Process is well documented online.)

I've had decent luck with cheap wifi Matter bulbs, but provisioning them is finicky, and sometimes they just crap out and need to be power cycled; Zigbee bulbs (e.g., Ikea) have generally been reliable, though sometimes I've had difficulty pairing them initially. After power cycling a Matter WiFi bulb, it takes a while for it to respond to Home Assistant; Zigbee bulbs generally respond as soon as you power them on.

I have a wired smart light switch from TP-Link/Kasa (KS205), and it's been completely hassle free (and totally local --- Matter over wifi). The Kasa smart switch dongles I have work flawlessly but need proprietary pairing, and I'm afraid to update firmware in case they lose local support.

    Good luck! Fun adventure :)

  • Cadence definitely the right place to start, since it shouldn't break the bank.

I'd do some research on cadence if you haven't already --- you mentioned getting up hills in a higher gear to be faster while also keeping HR down. That's definitely an option, but it can come at the expense of your legs (and worst case, knees).

Conventional wisdom today (as I understand) is that if you thrash your cardio, it'll recover fast; thrash your legs, they'll recover more slowly. So there tends to be a bias towards higher cadence (80-100rpm or so) for performance, with lower cadence useful for strength training.

Good luck! Cycling is a wonderful sport. Focus on the numbers and gadgets if you like, but at the end of the day remember to have fun :)

  • Nice! If you want a more quantitative way of comparing performance, a power meter is a great way. Average speed is affected by the route, the weather, etc., whereas power is much less influenced by these things (not entirely of course --- I put out more power on hills, and temperature has an effect, etc.).

The only downside is they are really expensive, and for MTB I'm not sure what the options are.

For reference, ~800kcal in ~2hours should mean roughly 110-120W average power, but without a power meter that's pretty much just a guess.

  • My idea of "perfect philanthropy" is something like the Carnegie Hall. While I think it is the government's role to provide places for art, I don't begrudge a city for having a more modest venue. So having a world class, tour de force concert hall is a pretty neat philanthropic project IMHO.

  • No, I've been a strict vegetarian for a long time, mostly vegan now but not strict about it. I did eat fish a few years ago because it was an invasive species (and also, delicious).

But also, I have no problem getting the food/nutrients I need from a plant based diet, which isn't always easy for other folks.

  • What's the conventional wisdom as to why this is so bad, but eating meat basically gets a pass? Like, meat offers sustenance, yes, but it's by no means required. So basically, humans eat meat because it tastes really good --- it's great "culinary entertainment."

This is a different kind of entertainment, but it's deeply offensive to many folks. I'm not trying to be a dick about it, just curious why this is seen as such a sin.

Is it that these animals weren't "supposed" to be killed? Would a movie about a beef cow who ends up getting slaughtered, both onscreen and IRL, be seen as better? Worse?

    Recommendations for first HF rig?

    Howdy!

I got my Technician in early 2000s, and last year finally upgraded to Extra. Looking to set up a very basic shack.

I'm looking for an HF setup, with most of my use probably using digital modes, but would like the ability to use voice.

Current transceiver is on loan from girlfriend's dad, a Ten-Tec Scout 555 --- 50W HF unit with separate modules for each band. One limitation of this is that the modules set the mode, so it's LSB on 40m, making e.g. FT8 not possible (without some hacking of code or perhaps hacking the module).

Antenna is end-fed with an off-the-shelf 49:1. Currently only have 20m half-wave, but have just enough room for a 40m half-wave in the attic, which is the ultimate goal.

For digital modes, it looks like there are sort of 3 classes of radio:

    • "full digital" where the radio has e.g. a USB port and handles audio, transmit, and frequency set.
    • Some computer-control with RS232, but uses computer audio+adapter to transmit.
    • No digital, use adapter to trans
