  • You've got it backwards. For most of history it was the other way around. We got to see a brief tantalizing glimpse of it in the 'oughties and naughties, and then the people who's lifestyle depends on an exploitable workforce got scared and decided that was enough freedom for the peons

  • There's an axiom I don't know the provenance of:

"You can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into"

It's not about the truth to them it's about making the scary unknown go away so they can get on with their lives. Nevermind the fact that their ignorance is causing their own demise and that of everyone else....

It takes an emotional shock, most of the time, to break that kind of deathgrip on a false reality

  • I'd recommend Stephen Baxter's "Ring" novel as a primer on cosmic strings, domain walls (the shell-like mass described here) and using wormholes for time travel.

Basically covers all of the funky science described in this article

  • Going to shamelessly plug my custom bashrc setup which has a ton of little scripting helpers and a few useful aliases. Remember to clone recursively if you want to try it out. (Still very much a work in progress, but it's getting to be pretty robust)

  • Having had a partner who gaslit and had basically a personality disorder, I could absolutely see someone getting driven to do what she did. You start to doubt your own ability to distinguish reality, to be able to trust yourself or anyone else. Constant fear and anxiety will make anyone go a little nuts
