Yes, we discussed this a while ago when lemmy-federate first came up and decided this is a bad tool for smaller instances as it makes the "All" feed worthless for thematic discovery and also puts additional strain on the server resources for posts and comments no one on our instance is actually interested in.

It is a less clear proposition for one-way participation (outgoing only), which AFAIK was added later, but I personally remain skeptical that this is a tool that is healthy for the overall Lemmy federation.

This should honestly extend to network attached devices in general. Way too many depend on some cloud service and are utterly useless without it.

I agree on the global forum aspect of Twitter being the reason it was exciting for public figures and journalists, but you get waaay more genuine interactions from normal (techy) people on Mastodon. It may feel a bit dead when you start out because there is no algorithm to feed you content, but after a while of using it you get a lot of interesting opinions and feedback on things you post.

You must have last used XMPP more than a decade ago, since none of these issues still exist (except on Pidgin which also hasn't been updated since a decade).

And XMPP is also not a "chatty protocol, and wasteful of network bandwidth" at all. In fact it is using significantly less bandwidth than Matrix and works on extremely shitty connections. It is basically the exact opposite of what you say.

Es gibt einen gewissen politisch gewollten Trend dazu Vereine die im Bereich der gemeinwohlorientierten Dienstleistung angesiedelt sind bürokrarische Hürden in den Weg zu legen und steuerliche Gemeinnützigkeit abzuerkennen usw. Oft mit dem Argument das die (kommunalen) Gelder fehlen das zu unterstützen bzw. passende Rahmenbedingungen zu schaffen (z.B. Sportplatz etc.), und das die Privatwirtschaft das doch besser könne.

Wenn das mit dem digitalen Euro ähnlich unkompliziert und ohne weitere hohe Kosten verbunden ist kann man darüber reden, aber die derzeitigen digitalen Bezahlmöglichkeiten grade bei kleinen Summen wie üblich beim Bäcker oder der Eisdiele rechnen sich meist überhaupt nicht und fressen den eh schon sehr mageren Gewinn bei so was auf.

Klar, Bargeld hat auch was mit Steuerhinterziehung zu tun, aber ganz ehrlich lieber etwas Steuerhinterziehung als das es den Stand oder kleinen Laden dann gar nicht gibt da sich das vorne und hinten nicht lohnt für die Betreiber.
