Oh I see then, thanks for the explanation. I'm not great at understanding the tone of online comments so now I understand better what you meant! Indeed there would be countless other examples throughout history of similar events :)
Do we have to go that far back?
...this is quite literally the community about history. If you don't care, you are not obliged to participate :)
Haven't putins early supporters suffered from sudden severe impact syndrome?
Those are more current events, so not really the place for that

By then Hitler no longer needed either Hugenberg’s corporate contacts or his Reichstag delegates. The bankers and industrialists who had once shunned the crass, divisive, right-wing extremist had gradually come to embrace him as a bulwark against the pro-union Social Democrats and the virulently anti-capitalist Communists.
Six months earlier, three weeks before Hitler’s appointment as chancellor, the banker Kurt Baron von Schröder had met with Hitler at Schröder’s villa in a fashionable quarter of Cologne. The arrangements were cloak-and-dagger: Hitler made an unscheduled, early-morning exit from a train in Bonn, entered a hotel, ate a quick breakfast, then departed in a waiting car with curtained rear windows to be driven to the Schröder villa while a decoy vehicle drove in the opposite direction.
Hitler walked out of the meeting with a 30 million reichsmark credit line that saved his political movement from bankruptcy. Once Hitler was in power, there was no longer need for secre

Most news outlets nowadays are the equivalent of Buzzfeed. They do whatever get them clicks. Journalism is optional. And so is any sense of ethics
If their customers don't punish them by withholding their money/support, their rich owners are definitely not going to push for a change. You saw how the main tech giants bent their knees at Trump's inauguration
What skills are needed to self host without too many headaches?
For this new year, I’d like to learn the skills necessary to self host. Specifically, I would like to eventually be able to self host Nextcloud, Jellyfin and possibly my email server too.
I've have a basic level understanding of Python and Kotlin. Now I'm in the process of learning Linux through a virtual machine because I know Linux is better suited for self hosting.
Should I stick with Python? Or is JavaScript (or maybe Ruby) better suited for that purpose? I'm more than happy to learn a new language, but I'm unsure on which is better suited.
And if you could start again in your self hosting journey, what would you do differently? :)
EDIT: I wasn't expecting all these wonderful replies. You're all very kind people to share so much with me :)
The consensus seems to be that hosting your own email server might be a lot, so I might leave that as future project. But for Nextcloud and Jellyfin I saw a lot of great tips! I forgot to mention that ideally I would like to have Nextcloud
Thank you so much for all the related info you provided. Very kind of you!
I already have used several tags in my previous bookmarks, so I doubt that's the issue in this particular case. I might simply have to check the add-ons I have at this point and see if any one of them is creating this problem
What happened to 'tags' in the bookmarks?
I am unsure if this happened with the new update or if I noticed it only now, but I cannot add any tags while bookmarking a page from the star icon in the address bar. The whole 'tags' field as shown in the image is completely absent now when bookmarking in that way.
The only way to add/edit tags seems to be through the bookmark manager.
Is this a new feature or I simply realized it now?
Edit: if it's not a new feature, does anyone by any chance remember which version of Firefox last had that tags field?
I'm on the same boat. But my "what the actual fuck?" moment came when (for those unfamiliar with it) YouTuber Idubbbz came out with a sincere apology for many of his videos that used extremely racist or ableist terms. While aware that his apologies did not automatically translated into being forgiven by the memebers of the groups he insulted, Idubbbz still felt it was important for him to apologize.
And in this situation, Penguinz0 just said that "Idubbbz shouldn't have apologized and it felt like he was exaggerating the whole thing". Way to inject yourself in something that did not involve him at all. Also, that really told me the kind of person Penguinz0 is: someone who dismisses others suffering when it's not his place to do so and someone who just goes off his own gut feelings alone.
I have watched the video and if you think he wasn't being honest, you probably are one of those people you mentioned that fall on the spectrum.
He might've used the tone of a joke, but he's been saying for a while now how he plans to "get back at those who wronged him". Hell, he even said that the GOP is impeaching Biden only because "they did it to him first".
I am shocked people like you think he's not being serious: he's literally telling you.
That's not true. The rich are extremely rich and with immense amount of power and influence, while the working class has little to nothing. That's capitalism working perfectly as designed, my friend
Are you surprised the genocidal regime that has been slowly eradicating a whole people for the past 70+ years could go this far?
I agree that the beauty of Lemmy is also within the universe of different instances. But a) as you can see in that question that I received, some users might simply not know how/which instance is defederated from X instance and b) I can understand both points personally. But as I wrote at the end, (new) users shouldn't expect a whole instance to go one way when the admins made clear that's not a direction they want to go to
Oh now I understand, thanks for giving me extra details! :) However, looking at the website you provided it seems like in only the last 2 months this community grew by over 9k (from 11,838 to 21,178 to be specific). We became the second most active instance in the whole of Lemmy
I'm sorry but I'm a bit confused by your comment because the link had more details about the server itself. I feel like I'm missing the correlation with my post
Dealing with new users’ expectations
During the weekend, I received the following message from a now deleted post originally titled ‘Why does such a large portion of Lemm.ee want to block Hexbear? And, how can Hexbearians improve?’:
Can you please share with the class how to find out what instances are defederated from hexbear? Some of us are still figuring out Lemmy. Thank you in advance!
First of all, if any of you are also wondering the same, you can check here with the defed.xyz website. Second of all, that question made me wonder why so many users here keep asking about defederation and I think the answer lies with this telling part of a comment made by @sunaurus about the possible defederation from Hexbear:
We do not have the resources (manpower, skills and knowledge) necessary to pass judgement on all instances which exist out there, as a result, users on lemm.ee are expected to curate their own content to quite a high degree. In addition to downvoting and/or reporting
Why does such a large portion of lemm.ee want to block hexbear.net? And, how can Hexbearians improve?
"lmao you got that mad about being called a little baby for being a little baby? Grow thicker skin or learn to self crit ffs."
Seeing your replies, I highly doubt anything anyone could say to you would not warrant a personal attack. You clearly like to think of yourself as someone who's open and willing to debate since you wrote:
"I choose to interact with these types in a more interrogative manner"
But you're not. You're just waiting in bad faith for extra ammunition to call people baby, fascist, or people unworthy of having opinions . You don't even know my political leanings, but just because I'm not a part of your group, that's reason enough for you (and other people of that instance) to pile on and mercilessly troll on other users.
I’ll stop interacting with people like you now. I moved to an instance which is defederated from hexbear for a reason, and I'm never been happier of my choice after talking to you and your friends. Have the day you all deserve.
Why does such a large portion of lemm.ee want to block hexbear.net? And, how can Hexbearians improve?
A perfect example of everything that people hate about the hexbear instance. Hope this answer your questions
Why does such a large portion of lemm.ee want to block hexbear.net? And, how can Hexbearians improve?
I never said people disagreeing with me is trolling. I'm quite aware of what trolling actually is. And I find interesting how that "people disagreeing with you is not trolling" line gets said so often by people of that instance. Trolling is trolling.
Why does such a large portion of lemm.ee want to block hexbear.net? And, how can Hexbearians improve?
I’ll give you my own personal reason. I've had to literally change instance because I had the misfortune to disagree with some of them. It was a political conversation and the level of hate and trolling was the most toxic I've seen on Lemmy. The amount of messages and replies that attacked me and/or mocked me was enough for me to made me painfully aware overnight of what hexbear is simply because all the attacks/trolling was obviously from the same instance.
There was (and in my opinion still is) no point in seeing their answers since a great amount of their replies were just pictures or gifs of things like the butthole of a pig, literal shit and things of that caliber. Additionally, every posts or discussion that talks about them, inevitably draws their attention and they start to spam the same kind of stuff, relishing in the idea that they are hated, simply replying with things like "cope, seethe, rent free etc".
I've also personally blocked all the instances from hexbear I could and a lot of users from there because I don't come to Lemmy to be called names, harassed or to try to have conversations with trolls.
Personally, I can't see anything that could help in change the culture when the people at the top AND the people at the bottom don't seem to have any interest in changing. I definetly give props to people like you for trying to change it and I'm sorry you get bunched up with less pleasant users, but I'm here to look at photos of pets, talking about plants and books and other silly things that don't deserve that level of hate. I certainly want nothing to do with it.
That was my personal view and experience. Hope it helped with your questions
Because our society says that if you have money, you must have earned it by being smart and savy...and some people still believe that
What specifically did you find shallow?
Oh my bad then. I'm not familiar with Gboard having never used it unfortunately. I don't think then that you can use multiple languages all at once. I can only say that AnySoftKeyboard is very customizable and as far as convenience goes, one can easily change languages with a swipe. You can also add your own exceptions and abbreviations in different languages
