The concept is used by pretty much all games now. It's just that during the gilded days of Intel everbody and their mother hardcoded around a max of 8 threads. Now that core counts are significantly higher game devs opt for dynamic threading instead of fixed threading, which results in Intels imbalanced Core performance turning into more and more of a detriment. Doom Eternal for example uses up as many threads as you have available and uses them pretty evenly
Let's be honest here it was never more than a band aid thrown together in an attempt to keep up with chiplets. Intel is in serious trouble because they still cannot compete with AMD in that regard, it affords them a level of production scalability Intel can currently only dream of.
Same, the only thing talkings to the internet are my reverse proxy and the security cameras (only when viewing them from outside the local network, quite like what reolink does there)
Imo if you're going to be the only one who would use the instance it is not worth it. Instead look for an instance that lines up with your personal interests (maybe check out the db0 instance).
Content federation basically works on a subscription model so you will only see content from other instances if someonen your instance went out of their way to subscribe to it. Smaller instances suffer under this as they might not even see popular communities from other instances.
PSA: bookwormstory.social tracking script
Hi everyone,
I've decided to include a tracking script on the site and in the name of transparency I would like to inform everyone about it. So here's that: the site, as of today, includes a tracking script.
A likely FAQ:
This lemmy instance has started picking up a lot of traffic, most of which likely isn't actual users but web crawlers.
For comparison another site I host had 98% of its traffic caused by AI web scrapers. In that case I used the tracking script to figure out whether actual usage was close to what I was seeing. While I have the access logs of my reverse proxy available to look through those are filled with federation traffic and as such not nearly as handy for diagnosing actual user traffic.
Yes, please feel free to do so. Simply block the domain analytics.neshweb.net
using your AdBlocker of choice or, if you are using PiHole or similar, you can block it on a network level.
Note: Moldova also has a bit of a infestation going on, might be interesting to see the Moldovan data split by region. I have a sneaking suspicion that the parts "influenced" by a certain Eurasian autocracy are mostly to blame for the increase
I go out of my way to exclusively spend money with the one publisher I've found who does not put DRM in their ebooks. I spend lavishly with them because good practices need to be rewarded monetarily in capitalism or they die out.
The rest I pirate.
Robbing a store is illegal. Murdering someone is also illegal, however one of the two is for good reasons punished much more harshly.
At least here in Germany the bypassing of DRM is so legal they don't even try to get you for it. The only thing they ever go after nowadays is distributing and consuming that cracked content (get logless VPN and that problem solves itself). But if you go and rip Netflix movies for your own enjoyment they have no leg to stand on in court unless you distribute it.
I will never stop being confused by this law. Just crossing the street cannot possibly be illegal anywhere. I'm fully convinced the entire thing is an elaborate joke by the americans.
Over here you can even make copies for personal use or sharing with a close group of friends.
I love the unintended consequences of declaring that the internet is to be treated under the same laws as radio broadcasts. Suddenly being allowed to make a recorded copy of anything as long as you yourself create the copy becomes significantly more important.
Between this and infinity nikki actively blocking non SteamDeck devices I have a feeling that Valve will bring the hammer down on this sometime soon.
When people buy a game, the store front says it should run and then it doesn't they're not going to yell at the developers. They're going to yell at the store and I doubt Valve wants to bother with the extra support workload that entails.
There is a distinct difference between taking out a loan on your house and saddling it 100% with debt again. Obviously any loan taken out should under all circumstances be one you can comfortably pay back.
Taking out 20k on a 1m home is way different than taking out 20k on a 100k home.
Plus, at least here, if you lose your job the following happens:
Couple that with not being stupid and getting a loan that eats your entire home as backing and you are pretty much safe from any short term disruption in your finances.
To touch on a few other points:
And worst comes to worst, rent out a room in your house as a sublet and use that to pay exclusively for the mortgage. Any loan you ever take out against an owned home shouldn't have higher monthly payments than that anyway or it, as you say, turns into an insane gamble no one in their right mind should take.
at least not without preparation, it's insane that you have to figure out inheritance in advance or your descendants get screwed. If you set things up properly then here you can inherit a primary residence tax free, but if you don't set things up then you're just shafted.
One example: If you get to own a house (that's paid off) not having debt on it is stupid because you get the lowest interest a regular person possibly can get. Even if everyone else has interest rates up to their mouth you'll get a rate so cushy investing the money in any index fund will outperform your interest payments.
Problem is a known on my end (I also experience this so network stuff is definitely not the culprit here), however I've been so far unable to fix it. I'm not exactly sure where the problem originates from either, given that it's a "minor" problem I've elected to just ignore it, let me know if it's a big problem for you and I'll see if I can try anything else to fix it.
The 14th gen didn't only have problems with Linux and I still don't trust Intel when they say they "fixed" the CPUs disassembling themselves. Given the money involved I'd definitely advise against 13th and 14th gen Intel in any case, just not worth the potential headache down the road. Either go with older Intel or AMD.
Mehrfach.
Not sure but imo whether or not it has been done doesn't really matter. If any one of the Dunkelfelger women up and just did it I don't think anyone would dare to question it, so it might as well be established fact.
Regarding their next 'actual' rank I still think they would evaluate a bit lower than where Alexandria should be simply because Rozemyne's library strategy will take some time to take effect but once it does they could feasibly reach #1 and stay there. Alexandria as is simply is not focusing on anything that produces immediate tangible "duchy points" so to speak. Education and knowledge are abstract concepts that seemingly don't influence the rankings nearly as much as hard achievements do. Though the latter is just a consequence of the former.
Not that anyone will complain about the Divine Avatar not dominating the rankings, which will just be another behind the scenes factor. Rozemyne very clearly can't be bothered about her duchy's rank and I imagine Ferdinand would like to avoid the hassle that comes with it as well for a good while. Up until some fool mocks his wife or their adoptive daughter for it, then the gloves come off, in the latter case whoever did it better run because they're in for a divine crushing.
Hannelore escaping ditter is, let me check, yup certainly not an option. She'll get dragged into it whether she likes to or not, this is still Dunkelfelger after all.
On Alexandria's ranking I have heavy suspicions a certain scheming Gremlin handler has advised the Zent and the Gremlin to suppress Alexandria's ranking for a while in light of the rather close connection between Aub Alexandria and Zent Eglantine. The country just survived an invasion/coup, keeping the other nobles content is a higher priority than accurately ranking the duchies.
Survey Results
I've let the survey run for long enough now I suppose (at least I'm not getting any new responses) so I'm making this post with the "results". If anyone is interested in the raw data I'll post it but for now I'll just focus on the conclusion I've drawn from it.
For the most part responses only varied slightly but most of the questions were only there to help make a decision about the core question: What do you want to happen with this instance now?. The responses to which varied a lot compared to the other questions.
There were some votes against opening up the instance to other series discussions but I myself and the majority of votes are in favor so that's what will happen. However I really dislike seeing empty discussion threads so there will be some rules in place so this doesn't end up like a spam machine. As is with all things in life these are subject to change.
#1: There must be at least 3 users interested in regular discussions for a series to create a community for i

Got this little gem today so might as well share it with you all. I really like how they did her hair, that's some 10/10 work right there imo.
Future of the Instance

Before I get into this I apologize for giving you all a heart attack. Actually no, I know what I am doing with that title, suffer!
Unfortunately the main story of Ascendance of a Bookworm released its last Pre-Pub chapter last week and with it a stop to the very regular weekly discussion threads. Obviously we will have Side Stories to look forward to, however those won't provide nearly the same regularity as the main story did.
Up until now the Pre-Pub threads have been the main driver behind activity on the instance and the closure of the story then opens the question of what will happen to this place going forward. First of all this instance will likely not be disappearing. I have my only active lemmy account on here and since I have 0 real hosting costs I have no problem keeping this going indefinitely, I also think it might be an opportunity to change things up a bit. However first and foremost this is a p

Admins (not mods) here are already swinging around the content-removal-hammer
Check the modlog for proof, a discussion post about moving this instance to an instance that shan't be named now got removed for "linking to instance featuring pedo content".
Ironically that exact possibility was reason for the discussion in the first place so seeing it happen this quickly is a bit funny.
Not sure how best to go about linking to said instance since it seems to get your content removed. DM's would be the only solution I guess but not sure if those are checked as well.
PSA: Instance Update to 0.19 on Wednesday
The initial hiccups with Federation seem to be resolved with 0.19.1-rc.1. Since I also managed to test the new Version of the Mestionora Bot (it should now actually post Part 2 and Part 3 Manga discussions in parallel instead of only Part 3, hooray) I will update the instance after PrePub discussions die down a bit.
Expected Timeframe is Wednesday 16:00 UTC - Wednesday 18:00 UTC.
During the Update changes to the expected downtime can be checked on status.bookwormstory.social.
If anyone has any questions please feel free to ask away.

Mitigations
Malicious comments have been replaced by a removal message. I have deployed the UI hotfix and @[email protected] has deleted all Custom Emoji until it is clear whether those are safe to use. Additionally all login sessions have been invalidated as a safety precaution as well, any cookies that were stolen are now rendered useless.
Conclusion
So far it does not seem like this instance was affected.
