PSA regarding FHSA

To maximize your 2023 tax savings with an FHSA, remember to make your contributions before December 31st. Unlike RRSPs, there's no option to carry over the first 60 days of 2024 contributions.

Additionally, if you're planning to contribute but lack the funds this year, consider opening an account and depositing a nominal amount, like $100. This strategic move will increase your carry forward room for next year to $7,900, which can be added to your regular $8,000 contribution limit, granting you a total of $15,900 available for contributions. Failing to do this could limit your next year's maximum contribution to just $8,000. Don't miss out on these opportunities!

Portfolio Dilemma: Hold or Add More?

I'm currently wrestling with a dilemma. Two significant positions in my portfolio have dipped by 15%. These are solid companies that I intend to hold for the long term. However, I've reached my allocation limit for them in my portfolio, so I can't increase my holdings. I'm curious, how do you handle such situations? Do you choose to patiently wait it out, or do you consider adding more & averaging down even when the stock has already reached its allocated percentage in your portfolio?

'The chickens are coming home to roost' after $26-billion acquisition of Shaw by Rogers received final approval earlier this year. In July, the CRTC set the “mobile virtual network operator” (MVNO) rates Quebecor will pay Rogers to use Rogers’ cellular network. The regulator chose Quebecor’s rate in final-offer arbitration. With the rates set, Quebecor was expected to start offering cellphone service in more areas across the country.

Rogers is now fighting those rates, having filed an appeal of the CRTC’s decision in the Federal Court of Appeal on Aug. 23.

Rogers had assured both the government and Quebecor the rate the CRTC set in arbitration “would be binding and final. It would set the rate once and for all.”

“Now that the transaction has taken place and the necessary approvals have been obtained, Rogers is patently acting in bad faith by refusing to accept the decision,”

  • While it might not directly relate to Canadian Finance News, I believe we could implement a similar regulation for big banks in Canada. Currently, none of these banks have raised their deposit interest rates, and I think this practice should become the standard.

  • "Cyclospora infection can occur due to eating contaminated, imported raw produce, especially leafy greens, fresh herbs and berries. Locally-grown produce is not known to carry Cyclospora," the BCCDC said in a release.

The parasite is commonly found in tropical and subtropical areas, including Peru, Cuba, India, Nepal, Mexico, Guatemala, Dominican Republic, and Southeast Asia.

Symptoms of the illness can include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, and vomiting. Some people also experience a fever.

"One thing of note is that the diarrhea for cyclospora can last for quite a while — [it] can last for a few weeks," BCCDC public health physician Dr. Mayank Singal said.

  • Although I agree with the sentiment, I believe that checking your credit report only once a year leaves too long of a gap, especially in this modern age of rampant identity theft and frequent data breaches.

I strongly advise everyone to sign up for Credit Karma & Borrowell, which allows you to check your credit score and report every month. These apps also provide helpful notifications for significant changes in your score, helping you stay vigilant against potential threats.

  • Thank you for your input! I didn't realize that net worth in stocks, GICs, HISA & registered accounts could be considered eligible assets for borrowing in Canada, which is fantastic. I'm definitely going to look into this further.

Regarding Interactive Brokers, I have some reservations about their management style, especially after their chairman, who is also their largest shareholder, criticized retail investors during the GME short squeeze, suggesting that normal people buying and holding a stock and causing a squeeze is manipulation. It makes me question their trustworthiness.

I truly appreciate your insights and find them enlightening.

    Thanks for sharing!

I currently hold a significant amount of cash in $CASH.TO as I am saving up to purchase my first property.

Looking ahead, my long-term objective is to engage in dollar cost averaging by investing in $XAW.TO every two weeks over the next 20-25 years.
