‘Corrupt as hell’: Clarence Thomas faces fresh calls to resign after more billionaire gifts revealed
They have to expand and term limit SCOTUS. Dilute his power, incentivize good behavior and force him out eventually
‘Corrupt as hell’: Clarence Thomas faces fresh calls to resign after more billionaire gifts revealed
Expand and term limit SCOTUS. This system is ridiculous
Americans seem to support abortion access. Why do Republicans keep trying to block it anyway?
Yeah I mean I think most people know that there are negative consequences that can happen, just like with any medical procedure. I’m just surprised by the fact that people might get a medical procedure then want to prevent all future people from getting it because they had a bad experience. Shows what I know about people.

I’ll say I don’t buy this argument, though that’s just my opinion. I don’t think these politicians care one way or another what happens to people as long as they get more power. I find it far fetched to say they’re seeking power so that they can be cruel.
Cruelty is a means (or side effect), not an end.
Americans seem to support abortion access. Why do Republicans keep trying to block it anyway?
Wow I’ve never heard of someone wanting to ban a medical procedure all together because they experienced an adverse effect of it. Thanks for the view into a psyche that I didn’t know about.
Americans seem to support abortion access. Why do Republicans keep trying to block it anyway?
Granted, but that doesn’t really answer the question. I’m asking why they’re so insistent on doing it, not how they’re maintaining power despite being unpopular.

I’d like you to cite a source to back up that claim.
Americans seem to support abortion access. Why do Republicans keep trying to block it anyway?
Yeah here’s a take that resonates with my cynicism about Republican politicians. They literally see it as a way to get more numbers in the long run because they know it disproportionally affects poor people (ei forces them to have more kids) and they know they can get those people to vote for them through other manipulation.
Seems like a pretty long con though right? The same cynicism tells me these politicians just care about short term wins.

I’m not basing my statement (about American sentiment) on what I see on the internet though! The polls and votes seem to support abortion access.

When somebody powerful does something perplexing, my guess is usually “because money”. Is that the case here? I’m not that informed about how politicians get their money…
Thanks!
Advice for growing Irish moss in the Seattle area?
I hope this isn’t too off-topic for this community. I also posted this in [email protected] so sorry to spam but I’m not sure which is the best place…
I have an old grass patch that I want to replace with Irish moss. Would love some advice on how!
Location: Seattle, USA.
Space: 15x12 foot section, partly under a laurel and a deciduous tree.
Soil: I’m not at all knowledgeable about soil, but heres what I know… It was originally just dirt with a on old lilac in it, then the lilac was replaced by grass, then 95% of the grass died during a construction project last year. Now it’s hard-packed soil and random tufts. It gets a small amount of leaves and other debris from the trees above it.
Sunlight: Direct sun for about half the day, then shaded by a house. Sunnier at one end than the other.
Questions:
Well that’s pretty cool
It’d be really nice if they clustered by instance. Then one could theoretically follow all politicians in their favorite party without having to look them up manually.
Is anyone under 40 still on Facebook? I think it’s all old people at this point.
Some annoying bugs
Sometimes local subscribers is nice to know. Maybe not more important than total subscribers, but useful nonetheless. Especially on a small/specific instance where you get to know your instance-mates, you might want to know how many of them are following a thing and whether you’re about to introduce them to something entirely new.
It’s ridiculous we don’t just peg minimum wage to some index of local cost of living and forget about it.
Well would you look at that
How many communities are there across all of Lemmy?
I don’t even know how to begin to figure this out. How many communities are there across every instance (or even just among those that are federated at all)?
The four-color theorem is pretty cool.
You can take any map of anything and color it in using only four colors so that no adjacent “countries” are the same color. Often it can be done with three!
Maybe not the most mind blowing but it’s neat.
Then you click it and they bury the lede for like 8 paragraphs only to reveal the answer is something incredibly stupid
“Here’s why”
Various instances going offline lately. Is there a place that lists the current status of major instances?
My other instance has been down for two days and I’m not sure where to go to see updates/discussion etc.
After browsing this community I saw a few scattered posts reporting other instances going down.
When Lemmy.World was down a week ago it was equally hard to find an explanation and/or a place to discuss what what happening.
Is there a community or website dedicated to “instance x is down because y”?
What data about me could Lemmy hackers steal?
Theoretically speaking of course ;)
If my home instance gets hacked, what’s the worst case scenario for my personal data?
Is it bad Lemmy etiquette to “pollute” the All feed of a niche instance?
I heard that the All feed aggregates content from all communities that instance members have subscribed to, meaning if I subscribe to a new community, it’ll start showing up in everyone else’s All feed.
Let’s suppose I have an account on an instance with a particular thematic focus. Should I avoid subscribing to communities outside of that theme, in order to preserve the purity of their All feed?
Is there a way to subscribe to all communities with the same name?
Is it possible to automatically subscribe to all (federated) communities with the same name?
Example in the screenshot: I want to follow !astronomy, and I don’t really care whether the content is coming from from Lemmy.World, kbin.social and mander.xyz - I just want to see it all.
Obviously I could manually subscribe to them all, but is it possible to do so automatically? Ideally if a new similar community pops up on another instance, I wouldn’t miss it.
I read here that community grouping is a thing, so that instances with identical communities can work together. Is that a feature that could work towards this end?
FOUR SEASONS How Has the World Progressed in Recent Years? (Winner of the world dataviz prize)
Lets make a list: Parenting tips for babies 4-6 months
I thought this would be a nice place to aggregate lists of miscellaneous parenting tips, organized by age. Maybe if this gathers lots of good input, I’ll post another age group in a few days. If nobody is into the idea, no big deal.
Let’s start with babies 4-6 months old, since newborns are way to fucking complicated!
Suggestion: post a single tip per comment, so people can up/downvote each tip, rather than long comments with lots of ideas. May the best advice float to the top!
Is the latest Twitter calamity driving significant users to Mastodon?
Another day, another absurd melt down at Twitter.
So far, Mastodon has been unable to attract a significant number of high-profile users (politicians, leading thinkers/creators of various fields, celebrities etc). In my lay opinion, it won’t truly replace Twitter unless it does.
But today’s news of rate-limiting and self-DDOSing seems even more insane than before.
Is it having an effect? Are notable public figures moving? Are the numbers up?
I ask this out of genuine curiosity, with no other motive!
What is the single worst thing about the API changes?
First of all, I post this as someone who is only modestly informed about the whole situation. I’m a casual user who moved here from Reddit mostly because of the blackout and I don’t have a super strong opinion about any of it.
I’m curious to learn though! Part of my curiosity is in the title - what’s the single worst thing the API changes have done (or will do)? Is it that they priced out Apollo? Is there another big third party app that’s getting killed?
Seeing lots of duplicate posts, regardless of App
Is it just me? I’m frequently seeing duplicates posts in my feed, on both Memmy and LiftOff. Anything I can do about this?
Is there a community for discussing Lemmy itself?
The title says it all. I’m looking for a community where people can ask questions and have open discussion about Lemmy overall, specific instances, communities within.
It seems people post questions about how to do things here, how to understand/explain Lemmy, discuss how Lemmy should be etc. in kind of a miscellaneous smattering of communities. Is there a community that brings that all together?
How do I use Ice Cubes (iOS app) for Lemmy.World?
I read somewhere in here that other fediverse apps like Ice Cubes should be able to access Lemmy.World content to give one an experience similar to the Reddit app. I have Ice Cubes already for viewing mastodon posts and it works ok.
When I tried adding my account in Ice Cubes, it asked for an Instance URL.
I entered Lemmy.World and got the message “This instance is not currently supported”. Am I misunderstanding something, or is this not possible?
