  • It’s hard to not read this and see the devastating impact of capitalism on our world politics. Brexit, Trump, new rise of naziism, inaction on climate change, pandemic response in the US, and erosion of democracy… how different would these have been if the worlds media was not centralized under one billionaire and his whims.

    Great article.

  • When saying ‘eeny, meeny, miny, moe’, have you ever felt like you were kind of counting? Well, you are – in Celtic numbers, chewed up over time but recognisably descended from the ones rural Britishers used when counting animals and playing games. ‘Hickory, dickory, dock’ – what in the world do those words mean? Well, here’s a clue: hovera, dovera, dick were eight, nine and ten in that same Celtic counting list.

    Interesting! Whole article was interesting.

Are We All Living Beyond Our Means Now? With rising costs of living, debt, and the doomscroll-to-checkout pipeline, we’re overspending more than ever.

  • Came here to say this. During trucking convoy I felt sad every time I saw the Canadian flag. It’s got its pride and power back these days and I no longer have to assume someone’s anti-vax when I see it on someone’s home or vehicle.

    Secrets & Wives

A single working mom begins a whirlwind romance with a man named Martin Lewis, then discovers that Martin Lewis doesn’t exist. This true story picks up right where Scorsese’s ‘GoodFellas’ left off.

  • Honestly, I agree. My first thought was that this woman’s having a mental breakdown. And I don’t buy it’s “for her kids”. What was threatening her kids? Are her kids going to see it that way in 20 years?

Usually I’m live and let live but something about this strikes me as… extreme and not a realistic expectation of people across the world without a cohesive plan.

  • I really, really sorry. I can’t even imagine. The neglect in the states should be registering world wide as a war crime. I went to San Francisco a couple years ago and was very, very depressed at the state of things. No sign of collective sense of responsibility or compassion.

  • As a Canadian, this has been scary and disheartening. I don’t know where we go from here.

It was one thing in 2016 when it wasn’t the popular vote and didn’t know what they were getting into. But now all I can think is… most of the voters voted for Trump even with Project 2025 published.

I don’t know how to act or feel. I don’t know what happens next.

  • The article is about the shifting creative career landscape and how different people have adapted. I’m not Gen X, or a creative, but I do think the timing of these downturns make a difference and the industry is under unique strain.

What’s a good magazine for interesting thought provoking articles?

I just realized my library card gives me access to an app I can borrow magazines from. And as someone trying to do less Lemmy scrolling at night and more long form reading, I’m wondering where to start.

I generally like politics, philosophy, interesting facts, history, social issues.

Also, I’m not American if that matters.

    What’s your favorite magazines!

Is it worth getting into video games?

I’m a 30 year old woman who’s only really played card and puzzle games on my phone. Im considering new hobbies. Is it worth trying to get into video games for the first time. Where would I even start.

How are people dealing with senior pets when they live alone?

I have a wonderful senior dog and he’s my best friend. And I’m so scared of his aging. As he’s slowing down and I keep an eye out for medical issues I just can’t imagine how and when to make a call about his life.

I work all day away from home and live by myself, which was not the situation when I’d adopted him initially. I don’t have a community or friends or family around to help during the day if and when it comes to that. I can’t afford dog sitters especially not ones with training.

What if he could be fine with more support and money, should I give him back to animal rescue?

Are there any Canadian news and current events comedy options?

I watch a lot of late night shows and British current events shows (have I got news for you, the bugle podcast). Really wish there was something equivalent for Canada. I know there was “this hour has 22 minutes” and Rick Mercer but I don’t think they’re around any more.

Any other Canadian comedic current events options?

I doubt future generations will have “basement dwellers” because none of us can afford to own basements.

“Basement dwellers” implies parents with multi level houses. I feel like the kid living with their parents for a long time will become more of a thing but they’ll be lucky to have the privacy and space of a whole basement.

And so I say, basement dwellers? In this economy?

YSK about the different “ways of knowing”

On these types of forums it’s easy to jump into an argument about the technicalities or a post or comment.

You should know, though, that there is a theory called Ways of Knowing which defines Separate Knowing and Connected Knowing. It’s been a part of my masters program I’m taking.

Separate knowing disconnects the humanity and context from what’s being said and tries to only argue the “facts”. But facts, and the things people say, don’t just occur in a vacuum. It often is the case when people are arguing past each other, like on the internet.

Connected Knowing is approaching the thing someone said with the understanding that there is a context, humanity, biases, different experiences, and human error that can all jumble up when people are sharing information.

Maybe even just knowing that there’s different ways to know would be helpful for us to engage in a different level of conversation here. I’m not sure. I just wanted to share!
