  • Not quite, "sounding" means we capture vertical profile of atmosphere as a snapshot. This is usually done with weather balloons and bunch of sensors attached (temperature, moisture, etc). We have sounding stations in all state https://www.weather.gov/upperair/sounding. Data from these weather balloons are fed directly live into weather models as "truth" so the models can course correct and make better near future predictions. It depends on the station, but hourly soundings is generally common. The TV station weather lady was complaining that in her particular state (WI) there hasn't been any sounding data at the time when she's supposed to be on air despite being under literal tornado warning right now.

Ofc, people at NWS got their shit together and released appropriate sounding data close to the tornado landfall https://www.spc.noaa.gov/exper/soundings/25042900_OBS/, but this illustrates that under reduced sounding frequency, hourly forecast became less accurate and there can be circumstances where people will get severe weather alert way later than they would/should.

I struggle these days whenever someone asks me for my political affiliation. But if you really force me, I’d describe myself as a “Waymo Democrat.” Waymos are the self-driving electric taxis started by Google. My party’s bumper sticker would read, “A chicken in every pot and a Waymo in every city.” And our TV ads would say: “Trump is for he/him — his grievances, his revenge, his corruption — and for bringing old stuff back ‘again,’ like coal and gasoline cars. Waymo Democrats are for ‘We the People’ and reinventing American industry anew.”

Why am I bringing this up now? It’s because, as my colleague David Brooks likes to say, Donald Trump is often the wrong answer to the right question. Trump today is offering America a spectacularly wrong answer — a tariff war against the whole world and a revival of 1960s assembly lines — to a very valid question: How do we get more Americans making stuff a

Why cargo bikes cost so much in the West?

The cycle rickshaw, which is a variant of a cargo bike is quite common in Asia. The price for a new one ranges from $100-500. Meanwhile, a bike with elongated rear rack, e.g., a longtail cargo bike (barely counts as cargo bike) can cost $1,000 in the West, and that is the entry level "cargo bike." A front load cargo bike costs $2500 and upwards. An Urban Arrow (tm) cargo bike can cost a whopping $6-7k.

Department of Commerce/NOAA terminated their cooperative institute research agreement with Princeton

    https://www.commerce.gov/news/press-releases/2025/04/ending-cooperative-agreements-funding-princeton-university

On Tuesday, April 8, 2025, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick announced that nearly $4 million in funding is ending to Princeton University after a detailed, careful, and thorough review of the Department’s financial assistance programs against National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (“NOAA”) current program objectives. In addition, the ending of these award programs will streamline and reduce the cost and size of the Federal Government, consistent with President Trump’s promise for his Administration.

The Department of Commerce is delivering on that promise.

Specifically, the following awards to Princeton are no longer aligned with the program objectives of NOAA, a sub-agency of the Department of Commerce, and are no longer in keeping with the Trump Administration’s priorities:

The US agency that monitors weather will cut another 1,000 jobs, AP sources say

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is starting another round of job cuts — this one more than 1,000 — at the nation’s weather, ocean and fisheries agency, four people familiar with the matter tell The Associated Press.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on Tuesday began plans to lay off 10% of its current workforce, people inside and outside the agency said, with some of them requesting anonymity due to fear of retribution. The numbers were presented to NOAA employees and managers were asked to submit names of positions for layoffs to agency headquarters, which will then go to NOAA’s parent agency, the Department of Commerce, on Wednesday, the people said.

Struggle session rant: I'm tired of victim blaming mentality in North America regarding bicycle helmets

I bike commute almost everyday, I'm tired of people in the office asking "where's my helmet" then followed by a snide comment that it is dangerous and I should protect my brain.

Here are my reasoning for not wearing helmet:

    1. I need my noise-cancelling headphone. The loud sound of cars is giving me more brain damage.
    2. I've been cycling since I was 4, and I've never got hit by a car. I know road rules and not an aggressive cyclist when commuting.
    3. I wear helmet when cycling for exercise, mountain-biking, when I could be distracted by either maintaining my rpm or cycling on difficult terrain. I don't cycle that fast when commuting.
    4. Helmet-checking is victim blaming. Cars are predominantly at fault in car-cyclist crash, it is almost always car who is not paying attention, texting, had eyes going elsewhere, dozing off, going off lanes. You cannot doze off when on a bike. Cyclist had everything to lose in a crash and tend to ride conservatively, regardless of what you believe.

Missed the Super Bowl? Here's the 1 (ONE) thing you need to know about last night's sports event

    https://www.aljazeera.com/opinions/2025/2/10/how-sudan-and-palestine-made-it-to-the-super-bowl

On Sunday night amid the spectacle of the Super Bowl halftime show, a performer raised the flags of Sudan and Palestine. In an event as meticulously controlled as the Super Bowl, his interruption was brief, quickly handled by security, and not shown on the live broadcast. But the moment itself, fleeting as it was, was deeply symbolic.

It reflected the resolve of the Sudanese and Palestinian people to break through the censorship of their narratives imposed by mainstream platforms and speak out. It was yet another example of how, when faced with systematic suppression, they have ingeniously found cracks in the system to make their voices heard.

Indeed, for more than a year, Sudanese and Palestinian people have made every effort to speak up. They have protested, organised and risked their lives to bring attention to their struggles. But the world has refused to listen.

The Premier League will “deal with” players’ goal celebrations if they cross into “mockery or criticism”, the league’s chief football officer has said.

Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye received a yellow card on January 25 after scoring the winner against Brighton and celebrating in front of the home fans by flapping his arms like a bird.

This was deemed by referee Tim Robinson, and the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), to have been inflammatory against Brighton, who are known as ‘the Seagulls’.

Football Association rules state: “Players can celebrate when a goal is scored, but the celebration must not be excessive; choreographed celebrations are not encouraged and must not cause excessive time-wasting.” And cautions can be issued for “gesturing or acting in a provocative, derisory or inflammatory way”.

While speaking on various officiating subjects at a media event this week, the Premier League’s chief football officer, Tony Scholes, was asked for

HOW CAN ANYONE BE THIS DAFT

    https://archive.is/lbWKO By Michael C. Bender Nov. 11, 2024Updated 3:17 p.m. ET

Voters in liberal strongholds across the country, from city centers to suburban stretches, failed to show up to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris at the levels they had for Joseph R. Biden Jr. four years earlier, contributing significantly to her defeat by Donald J. Trump, according to a New York Times analysis of preliminary election data.

The numbers help fill in the picture of Mr. Trump’s commanding victory, showing it may not represent the resounding endorsement of his agenda that the final Electoral College vote suggests. Mr. Trump won the White House not only because he turned out his supporters and persuaded skeptics, but also because many Democrats sat this election out, presumably turned off by both candidates.

Counties with the biggest Democratic victories in 2020 delivered 1.9 million fewer votes for Ms. Harris than they had for Mr. Biden. The nation’s most Re

  • When you say the first element of a matrix, first implies one and not zero. This is how linear algebra was invented (on paper, by a human mathematician), taught, and passed down to fellow humans.

Starting indexes at zero stem from the lineage of C programming and binary nature of computer. For example,

Computer memory addresses have 2N cells addressed by N bits. Now if we start counting at 1, 2N cells would need N+1 address lines. The extra-bit is needed to access exactly 1 address. (1000 in the above case.). Another way to solve it would be to leave the last address inaccessible, and use N address lines.

This is why, math and physics people who learn linear algebra and matrix calculus learn to index at 1 (on a piece of paper) while computer science programmers index at 0.

  • MATLAB is for matrix calcs. Matrix indices start at 1, fight me. Given a matrix X of m x n size, you write

Matlab has many issues, amongst other accessibility (which can be remedied by piracy), closed-software, but as a program designed to do computational matrix manipulation, starting at index 1 is literally correct. This is how you learn matrix indices in intro linear algebra. How is it make sense then you use a software to assist computation and start indexing at 0, while you write the equations and indices on a piece of paper you start at 1. CS majors go home.

  • Elijah Orlandi makes deliveries for Grubhub in the evening after his 9-to-5 job.

“There are scenarios where people have the right to be upset,” said Orlandi, who lives in the Bronx and has been making e-bike deliveries for Grubhub — in addition to his 9-to-5 job — since October. He has seen e-bike riders “swerving in between cars and all that kind of stuff.” But Orlandi is also hoping for compassion. “People got to understand, we’re working,” he said. Delivery apps, he noted, keep track of how quickly workers make their drop-offs — and ding them if they take too long. “Sometimes you’ll be going somewhere and Grubhub will send you another order, and then no matter what you do, you’re going to be late,” he said. “So that’s why you’ll see a lot of people rushing.”

Surely the problem here this dude's e-bike. Not that people need to do gig job on top of 9-5 work day, unaffordable rent, inflation, and exploitative gig economy platform
