  • That was really informative - so much so you should watch it… but if you really can’t; there are 6 types of data broker and these services only target 1 and in that one they only manage to remove ~1.5% of that data in 6 months of membership.

  • Sorry I should have clarified; the notifications on replies are when I reply to someone else’s post. If I start a new thread I just notice I don’t get any replies or notifications. My posts are just removed completely, I’d say it happens to around 50% of my comments on YT. I suspect I’ve been mass-reported by right wing bots, and my account is now marked for extra censorship in some way.

  • I’ve been thinking about this and I have no problem with AI being trained on things I’ve made public.

What I do have a problem with is that AI being owned and monetised by the super wealthy to further enrich themselves at my expense.

  • How about a battery the same size and weight as the 22kWh leaf battery?

Edit: I actually just looked up the 2010 Leaf pack and it’s 294kg, with CATL prototyping 500Wh/kg cells a 100kWh pack leaves 94kg for a nice box and BMS. Maybe this challenge is too easy.

  • With current technology yes it’s impossible, although those doughnut motors are next level, so you are spot on with tweaking the definition of efficiency. Things we can do now are as you mentioned wind resistance, Lucid have achieved over 5mi/kWh in a large luxury vehicle focusing on that.

You can focus on rolling resistance of the tyres, or my making an ultra-efficient smooth self-driving system.

Next is weight, making the car and batteries as light as possible. Although this would reduce the regenerative braking, the inefficiencies in that system would also be reduced.

Ancillary power, most cars have reasonably efficient heat-pump and electrical systems but shaving a few milliwatts from each system and cutting out a few truly unneeded systems will cut down on wasted power and weight. I like the Ami and it’s, ‘you already have a screen, entertainment system, and sat nav on your phone’ philosophy.

Now we get to the tweaking of the efficiency definition… how about we say you can have as many kWh as you like as long as it’s no bigger and no heavier than the origin leaf 22kWh pack?

Maybe adding solar or other micro-generation with an assumption on % of day/night driving and average power achieved by micro generation.

    Cloud services and hardware alternative

I was under the assumption that Raspberry Pi was a US based company, but I just found out they are European and almost all made in Wales.

It’s probably the most European computer you can buy, with a massive following of enthusiastic developers creating alternatives for all the cloud services we are trying to stop using.

This has confirmed my choice to try and replace the US based cloud services my family and I are currently using.

  • Which printer and why? I just bought three L8690CDW Colour laser printers for me and my family after calling Brother who were happy to talk me thought my concerns, they informed me that this model does not have chipped cartridges so it’s ineligible for their cartridge subscription program and they also can’t tell if the cartridge is genuine or not. They don’t care if you use 3rd party toner.

  • I used to travel all over Europe for work, one day I arrived in Munich where the passport control officer asked if I was there for Oktoberfest. I explained I don’t drink and I was just there for work.

He looked me up and down, tilted his head a little and said “Really? You, Don’t drink?

I’m a big guy, not fat fat, but big. I was so annoyed with suggestion that I must like my beer because of my stature, I stewed about it in the taxi all the way to my hotel until I caught myself in the mirror of the hotel room, where I realised I was wearing a Guinness shirt I picked up in Dublin the previous week.

  • I’ve just been making a wardrobe in an alcove where in the space of 1200mm they have managed to be out by 40mm (1.5 inches in 4ft for our American folks) Trying to be within 1-2mm and deciding on referencing a side wall that’s curved but making the room “more square”, and having a variable depth wardrobe or making something that looks right but that I know is a parallelogram. Either way a future guy with a tape measure will ask “what idiot built this?”

    Coca Cola alternatives

My one vice is diet caffeine free coke, I’m so rock and roll. Trying to find a UK/EU alternative I keep finding almost all drink brands are owned by Coke or Pepsi. These companies which originated in the USA have entities in the EU, which complicates the decision. Can anyone recommend a wholly UK(ideally) or EU alternative that’s reasonably priced?

UK Teslas sales up in Feb before new ‘25’ plates

While many people may have had Tesla orders with non-refundable deposits before the salute incident, there is no excuse for buying a Tesla now and supporting an actual Nazi.

I’m hoping I don’t see any Teslas with the new ‘25’ plate, but if I do I may have to mention something to the driver about what it now symbolises.

Dealerships don’t want to sell EVs

This is just a rant… maybe a discussion starter

Margins on 2nd hand and new electric cars are thin, gone are the days where you could get 25% off a new car, and thin margins mean lower commission.

Servicing costs are minimal so no kickbacks for selling the servicing plans.

People are wise to paint protection and alloy wheel cover that cost more than a refurb.

EV buyers tend to make better decisions and are more likely to be cash buyers or finance elsewhere, so no kickback for selling a finance plan.

Manufacturers still selling higher margin hybrid and ICE vehicles mean they are the real target for salespeople.

Manufacturers also want to shift their ICE inventories and new products so they are still pushing the FUD on electric, and myths like “EVs will be obsolete once Hydrogen cars come out, you may as well get an ICE car in the meantime.”

I’ve had a really bad customer experiences at Toyota, Honda and now Kia dealerships.

I know people will suggest the Tesla online sales m

Anyone else so used to being gaslit by the government they started to read this thinking ‘Great! Let’s find out how I’m a “failed citizen”, who had rubbish plans during the pandemic’

I’m finding this transition a little difficult, I’m hopeful but I’m still half expecting the Home Secretary to announce concrete shoes at low tide for all immigrants or something.

Water bills set to rise by £19 a year

As a Thames Water “customer” (given the complete lack of competition maybe “hostage” is a better term) who will have a £20 rise per year, and as someone with no money I’m fine with paying an extra £1.65 a month for water, but not to Thames Water who will inevitably use that money to pay shareholders dividends.

If it stops us from dumping raw sewage into the rivers and oceans I’ll happily pay ten times as much, but it’s clear that Thames Water is just corrupt, and cannot be trusted with any extra money.

Brexit ghoul Dyson cuts 1000 jobs

James Dyson who famously championed Brexit then moved his company’s head office to Singapore, and finally lost a libel case when papers pointed he was a massive hypocrite, has now announced he is cutting 1/4 of the UK workforce.

All this while parliament is busy swearing in all the new members.

In case you needed another reason to avoid his crap vacuum cleaners other than the horrible repairability and quality of failure prone components.

    "Latest"

Is YouTube actively trying to make their platform as unusable as possible?

In case you can’t zoom the YouTube definition of ‘latest’, is any time in the last few years.

My video suggestions are also 50% text posts now for some reason.

    Simple freedom car for pensioners?

I need some help finding the simplest but safe small EV for my parents in their 80s. They currently drive a massive old Mercedes E and S-class, but they don’t need such big cars, as sight and reaction times dwindle having such big powerful cars might get them into trouble. I’m looking for a small simple EV with the ability to lock things down and start every drive with consistent user selectable settings. Maybe limit the power, ensure the air conditioning is set appropriately every time and that the radio turns on to their station and with the volume at a good level. Basically so they just have to get in and press the go pedal, without worrying about messing anything up because the next drive will be back to normal again. For size I really like the Honda-E but I have taken them to two garages and both have been terrible experiences, where the salesperson tried to convince my parents that EVs were a dead technology and that they should buy a Hybrid until the Hydrogen cars come out. What can your phone do today, that it couldn’t do 10 years ago?

Just thinking back to the iPhone 6 which is 10 years old this year. I’m trying to work out if there are any features people use that weren’t available 10 years ago?

My dad still uses my old iPhone 6, and it really highlighted for me that innovation has stagnated in the last 10 years, unless I’m missing something.

    iPhone Thermal Camera

I’m still on the iPhone X, and the latest models just don’t have any features I’m excited about. I was thinking about what would make a difference to me and I think a really cool feature that would make me upgrade is thermal imaging.

Thermal cameras are expensive and the resolution and frame rate is generally rubbish because they are a niche item, but they are so useful. I’ve used them for everything from fixing heating systems, cars, and electronics to simply checking if my dog is still in the garden in the dark, or working out where ‘that draft’ is coming from.

Thermal imaging needs to be brought into the mainstream for price reduction and development, that integration to the next generation iPhone can deliver.

Am I just a weirdo, or would you like a thermal camera on the iPhone?

Looking for a reason to upgrade…

I’m typing this on an iPhoneX I got on day of release. I’ve had a new battery and it’s still perfect. I kept telling myself I’d wait for USB-C, but now it’s here I’m just not bothered. I think the only reason I would have to upgrade is when mobile apps drop support for iOS 16. What “must have” feature are you using to justify an upgrade?
