  • KDE, but it seems I soft-broke it as well while installing after regular Gnome Ubuntu. Now I'm installing Kubuntu on my laptop and will try out any other distro on a new SSD I bought for my desktop.

As others pointed, doing stuff in a rush and blindly using guides and pasting commands makes everything more difficult. No matter how robust or good the UI is lol

  • Speaking of myself, I think I'm just too lazy / have too little time and energy to slowly troubleshoot everything.

I am always on a rush, and when you're on a rush and something like apt not working happens, you just implement some workaround that maybe makes everything worse or is not a full solution. As others pointed, putting commands you see on Google without fully understanding them is a bad idea, and a lot of my "Linux troubleshooting experience" is "trying a bunch of Google solutions in a trial and error fashion".

For example a base issue I have with my current installation is that I firstly installed Ubuntu and then installed KDE, instead of installing Kubuntu, and the installation is kind of glitchy. I never put the time to fix the issues that maybe were not that difficult to fix, but they were unimportant and it just worked. That stuff slowly accumulates over time until the fresh install with that characteristic "this time will be different" feel lol

Why is Linux so frustrating for some people?

Don't get me wrong. I love Linux and FOSS. I have been using and installing distros on my own since I was 12. Now that I'm working in tech-related positions, after the Reddit migration happened, etc. I recovered my interest in all the Linux environment. I use Ubuntu as my main operating system in my Desktop, but I always end up feeling very limited. There's always software I can't use properly (and not just Windows stuff), some stuff badly configured with weird error messages... last time I was not able to even use the apt command. Sometimes I lack time and energy for troubleshooting and sometimes I just fail at it.

I usually end up in need of redoing a fresh install until it breaks up again. Maybe Linux is not good for beginners working full time? Maybe we should do something like that Cisco course that teaches you the basic commands?

Any open source wrapper for Facebook Messenger?

publicado de forma cruzada desde: https://lemmy.ml/post/2114413

I hate Facebook but realized I can't uninstall the bloatware Messenger app from my phone since I actually need it for Facebook Marketplace (I usually use it for selling second-hand stuff and looking for other products/services). Also I have plenty of friends there and it might be good to reconnect with some without dealing with the spyware Meta shit.

Also something for WhatsApp would be good as well

What is the least SEO-fucked search engine?

What search engine is currently showing the most useful results? What other tricks do we have aside of adding "reddit" or whatever internet community to the results?

How often do you play? How often are you involved in fully free, creative, nourishing activities?

More than just the question I want to explain a thought that led me to this topic. How often do we play?

I mean, we are usually entertained, whether scrolling, watching some content, making silly jokes, and shit like that, but is it an actual play?

I was just kind of playing a sort of Q&A game with my wife, basically I was just asking her random questions and recording them in Notes as if it was an interview. It was super fun and we ended up with basically a log full of both funny and interesting questions&answers and intimate stuff. It was just interesting to think about questions and for her to think about answers. We felt pretty connected this time and it costed us 0.00$.

Now, compare that to the usual forms of "entertainment" we usually just "consume": mindless scrolling interrupted by ads, clickbait videos, movies and series, porn, videogames with set rules and competition, "going out" (which is mostly purchasing a burger or other services). Usually it either costs money
