Weekly Discussion: What song were you surprised to find out wasn't well known outside Canada?
Basically anything Tragically Hip.
Well, the voters did fire him.
Now it's up to his party to do the same, as thwy have done with so many other former leaders who lost.
Is next quarter's line going up a bit faster really more important than not putting yourself in a situation where you have to convince your security team to wear explosive collars?
He also talks about changing how executive incentives work to encourage a longer term outlook and to account for the externalities that their companies/decisions create. Making sure those corporate decision makers have much more personal "skin in the game".
He sounds like he's ready to spend on capitol projects at the moment.
In his book he calls for government spending on capital projects in order to kick-start private investment in expanding their businesses (and payrolls, ultimately leading to more employees in better paid jobs and therefore at a higher taxable level)
it sounds like the Bloc really wants a rematch.
I doubt they'll try to topple the government until the threat of Trump is neutralized. Or at least significantly muted. They have a common goal with the rest of the country on that issue.
Plus, what's their warchest look like at the moment?
that's in to a lot of conservative ideas
Fiscal conservative ideas, maybe.
Socially he's relatively liberal. Maybe not quite as much as Trudeau, but nowhere near what the CPC has become.
The numbers allow a continuation of a Liberal-NDP confidence-and-supply arrangement.
Or a less formal agreement, if there is no appetite for a similar arrangement as last time.
Or, my preference, working to consensus with both BQ and NDP.
In the long term, of course, it means nothing because climate collapse effectively makes wealth moot
That is another repeated theme in Carney's book
I further hope the party gets some introspection and ditches a lot of their dumbass culture wars inspired policies.
.
.
Yeah, I know. I might as well wish for a pony while I'm at it...
I completely agree the liberals wanted all the seats for themselves
It's an election. What party doesn't want that??
I wouldn’t take anything for granite.
That's not a very gneiss thing to say.
America had an incredibly good thing going for them, but thanks to greed and ignorance it still wasn’t enough.
Trump is basically the living embodiment of the fable of the Goose that laid the golden eggs.
Carney brought a net zero focus with him to Brookfield. They didn't impose it on him.
And, anyway, what's wrong with wanting to reduce the damage humanity is doing to the planet that we all live on?
I agree that fact checking needs to be the standard in media coverage of political statements.
But I don't think the AI tools that are currently available are ready to do it without significant human oversight. They are still prone to hallucinations and other unpredictable behavior now and then.
I'm gen-x, my kids are Z. We all voted ABC.
Any "maple MAGA" wannabe Americans are free to write in Trump's name...
I'm not sure a bread machine has any advantage over a normal stand mixer.
It takes care of the mixing, and rising. It's very "set it and forget it".
Forming buns or a pizza crust out of that dough and tossing that in the oven is a pretty fast part of the process.
Maybe he should have been licensed to handle a deadly weapon
Do we know that he had a valid licence?
looking like he's also in shock and he apologizes for what he did.
You might be surprised to learn that almost every criminal tries to appear apologetic after they get caught. Usually as an attempt to prevent facing the consequences of their actions.
He spends a lot of time in the book making the case that getting to net zero (or better) is necessary if we hope to have a thriving society in the future.

Rocky Mountain employers in Alberta see major boost in temporary foreign worker approvals
The trend isn't confined to the Bow Valley or even to Alberta. The federal government has temporarily eased limits on how many temporary foreign workers a business can hire in low-wage positions, and employers across Canada have increasingly made use of the program.
