  • We had this in our local, small town police department. Female police officer spoke up and blew the whistle on somebody that was accepting BJ's to let tickets slide.

The department "downsized", let her go, then re-upsized to hire a different person back. Then they said her allegations were just in retaliation for being let go. Then she sued for wrongful termination and I THINK she ended up winning.

I might have some of the details mixed up cause this was all going down JUST as I was moving into the town.

  • For me, it's family. Even within the US I know there are a lot of better places to live with more to do, more walkable neighborhoods, etc. But my wife and I both have our parents here, and we both have 2 siblings and there are 9 cousins (our generation's kids) and I love watching them grow up together. As much as I disagree with the politics locally and Nationally, I also love that I don't have to raise my kids on an island. So it's either stay here, or join a cult somewhere.

  • When I go for a bowl of cereal, I pour out as much cereal as I want, then add the appropriate amount of milk. I would NEVER pour myself a hearty bowl of milk and then just cereal to taste. That's the part that feels craziest to me.

  • I'm engaged in a 10 year battle against chafing. I finally found shorts I like, but they were manufactured in partnership with my local running store, and they couldn't justify keeping the program going.

Then I switched to Asics 2 in 1 with built in boxer-briefs. I thought they were perfect but I swear the last 2 pairs I had lasted less than 5 runs before a hole opened up and allowed chafing.

Now I've been running in LuLuLemon shorts that are a tad smaller than I'd prefer, but they've been completely chafe free and seem to be holding up structurally.

  • The opposite hurts too. Last week I only got myself a little pizza, expecting to clean up at least 1/2 a slice from each of my 2 kids. They spited me and they devoured their pizza with a focus and drive Is never seen from them before.

  • As I understand it, something like that happened with the game, Alliance. It was a RTS where humans had to control all the units that the commander build and ordered around.

I learned about this, probably 15 years ago, and I never played, so a lot of this might be outdated or just plain wrong.

I think Microsoft published the game, and eventually abandoned it. It still had a thriving mod community but they were struggling due to the lack of source code and support. Apparently, years after working on the game, one of the designers happened across an Internet forum talking about the struggles they were having. The designer then went back to his bosses and said, "We abandoned this years ago, can I just give them the source code?" I guess they did and since then the mod started making HUGE fundamental changes to the game.

  • For me, I saw very little benefit to RSS until I hosted fulltextrss. Most of the feeds I subscribed to, the RSS feed just gave you the headline, and made you load up the full website and all the ads to read the article. They don't really want you just skimming the good stuff and skipping the ads.

Fulltextrss basically loads in the full articles, pictures and all (if you so choose). It means I can read stories from all the sources I want, without really leaving my RSS reader.

  • But remember when we found out CFC's were damaging the ozone layer? Somehow scientists convinced everybody to switch to more expensive, less effective refrigerants, and then it all got better. Gosh, we didn't know how good we had it back then.

  • Maybe they're using a similar system to O2 sensors in SCUBA rebreathers. 3 identical sensors measure the same thing. When one sensor drifts, the computer uses the value from the 2 concurring sensors, and throws an error to let you know something is wrong.

That system is life-critical, so these beans must be about the same importance.

  • This is a post right now because prices have (hopefully) temporarily spiked. My grocery store had a sign apologizing, blaming avian flu+high demand, and promising to keep their process competitive. I think 2 bucks is normal for us too but right now they're over $5.

Cloudflare is not working for me the way I hoped it would.

Hello all, The first thing I setup to self-host was NextCloud, and I followed instructions and built the stack directly on the host computer. It's hosted on port 80, and I created a Cloudflare tunnel from "cloud.mydomain.com" which points to http://192.168.1.111 and everything works perfectly. I can access the site from wherever, and everything felt great. Now for the thing I really want, an Immich server.

I followed the instructions and set up Immich in a docker container. Everything seems to be working great, I can access it from within my network and backup photos just like I was hoping. Within the same Cloudflare tunnel, I tried to add a new Public Hostname. I want "photos.mydomain.com" to point to the same host but on port 2283. I added the public hostname and pointed it to http://192.168.1.111:2283, but whenever I point a browser there I get the "502 Bad Gateway" error from cloudflare.

I assume this is a Cloudflare configuration issue, but I'm not 100% sure. Do I need to do a
