  • Literally me with my Framework laptop, trying to get hidpi to work. I either get tiny text, blurry text, tiny icons, but fine text, or some other weird combination of shit. Luckily, gnome-terminal does work. So as long as I never use any GUI apps, then hidpi "works" on the Framework. 🥴👍

No, I will not switch to Fedora. Yes, I've tried it. No, I'm not a fan of "fixing" hidpi by avoiding scaling, everything is tiny. Yes, I've also tried the new Framework display at 2x scaling, no I didn't like it.

The real solution for me is to avoid this class of problems altogether by going back to a regular dpi screen, where everything was legible, clear, and I could use whatever damn GUI apps I wanted. I'm moving back to an X11 Carbon (rip Dell XPS) next chance I get.

  • For sure use Tailscale for VPN. They have apps for iPhone, Android, macOS, and Linux, so setting up your own personal network will be easy. Hosting on the real internet is definitely advanced and not always necessary.

  • Dell XPS and Lenovo X1 Carbon are the best laptops for running Linux. I currently have an AMD Framework and, while it's nice that it's repairable, Linux support is crap compared to the XPS and X1. I was actually looking into selling this junk Framework laptop and buying an X1 Carbon.

  • More than you think, actually. My wife recently signed up. I'm like, Babe! I already have uBlock Origin to block ads on desktop! On mobile, Firefox also blocks ads and allows listening to videos with the screen off. 😫

But, we still get ads on our smart LG TV. So. That's apparently enough to throw the money away.

  • Check the documentation can be pretty useless a lot of times. The docs aren't always great or they're huge and I have a specific question. Often times I do check them, but they're incomplete or unclear. Or the docs change or the links die.

Just answer the question anyway and then say where you found it.

  • Uh, yeah, exactly. I'm like wat. Chapulines are delicious. At worst they kinda taste like walnuts to me. If people ate them blindfolded in a taco with other ingredients, I don't imagine too strong of a reaction.

  • That link kinda showcases exactly my point... It's pretty useless to me. I know how to install the app. I don't know what the daily workflow looks like.

Compare that to the tutorials YNAB has on YouTube. Those talk more about how to use the app to budget.

Anyway, it's fine. I understand I'm not the target audience for Actual. It seems like it's for people who already have prior experience with finance apps.

How to get your car on 4 jack stands with only pinch welds?

My car's owners manual only lists the 4 pinch welds next to the tires as lift points. No front or back lift points are mentioned.

How can I get the car on 4 jack stands?

If I place my floor jack on the front-left pinch weld to lift the car, there is not enough room for me to place a jack stand at that location anymore. The floor jack gets in the way.

However, I recently found a very interesting video by Home Depot that demonstrates just this.

    https://youtu.be/df3nmx_LyGY?t=35

Is this the way everyone has been doing it? My floor jack is pretty wide at the bottom and doesn't allow me to place a jack stand that close to it. Do I just need different equipment?

How wide are those pinch welds?

    How does renouncing citizenship work?

Let's say I become a citizen of a country that doesn't allow dual citizenship. During naturalization, new country B tells me I have to renounce citizenship from old country A.

Does that have any effects back in country A? How would country A know? Would country A even care if they found out?

Suggestions for above ground sprinkler valve enclosure?

I'm currently working on my sprinkler valve box. It sucks ass. It's dug in the ground. I'm on my knees trying to replace a Hunter valve. This is the second time I'm back here this week because replacing the diaphragm didn't fix the leak. I think I'm gonna have to replace the whole valve, but the stupid valves are in the stupid valve box. So now I have dig out the box anyway (which is something the valve box is supposed to save you from).

I don't get why people think valve boxes are a good idea... It's making maintenance a bitch. It also hid the leak from me for a while. I only found this problem because I had a HUGE helldivers2-style bug breach here. Which makes sense: the box provides shelter and water.

I'm thinking of redoing this part of the Irrigation system and having the valves stick up out of the ground. Obviously now I have to protect against the weather, but that seems like a decent trade off for easy maintenance, easy malfunction discovery, and less potential for a bug infe

Friends don't let friends buy HiDPI displays

My lower res, lower DPI display from my old Dell laptop looks much more sharp and crisp than the fancy pants Framework 13 high res display.

Framework vs Dell laptop display comparison

In 2024, with GNOME 45, Wayland, and 1.25 fractional scaling, regular DPI displays still look better than HiDPI displays. This is a photo of Discord on two laptops side by side.

The blurry one is the HiDPI display from Framework 13. The sharp one is a regular DPI display from Dell XPS 13. Both laptops.

The difference is even more stark in person.

Even the screenshots from the Framework are blurrier than the screen shots from the Dell.

Can I block posts about Reddit?

I'm starting to get tired of people talking about Reddit on Lemmy. I personally don't care about Reddit anymore and am not interested in Reddit news.

I already blocked c/reddit that helped. Is there anything else I can do? Is there a way to hide posts that contain a keyword?
