    WIP: Introductory post about NATO's war in Ukraine

  • Donbass (2016) - War documentary by Anne-Laure Bonnel. (TankieTube, Internet Archive) - A French director goes to Donbas region, showing the state of things as it is being bombed, interviewing people in bomb shelters, hospitals, on the street, etc. CW: Graphic scenes, deaths/injuries shown.

    Articles/videos by Geopolitical Economy Report. He has several articles/videos worth checking out, but I'll just list two:

    1. "West prepares to plunder post-war Ukraine with neoliberal shock therapy: privatization, deregulation, slashing worker protections" - "... starting in 2017, representatives of Western governments and corporations quietly held annual conferences in which they discussed ways to profit from the civil war they were fueling in Ukraine. In these meetings, Western political and business leaders outlined a series of aggressive right-wing reforms they hoped to impose on Ukraine, including widespread privatization of state-owned industries and deregulation of the economy."

    2. "CBS censors its own report on Ukraine weapons corruption" - "Under Ukrainian government pressure, CBS News censored its own documentary “Arming Ukraine,” which showed that just around 30% of the weapons Western governments have sent actually go to the frontlines, with widespread corruption and black markets."

    "The Nulands: A family business of perpetual war" - Article about the role of Victoria Nuland and husband Robert Kagan within the military-industrial complex as well as going into detail on Nuland's career and involvement in Ukraine. "Neoconservative pundit Robert Kagan and his wife, Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland, run a remarkable family business: she has sparked a hot war in Ukraine and helped launch Cold War II with Russia – and he steps in to demand that Congress jack up military spending so America can meet these new security threats."

    On Reinhard Gehlen, the CIA, and NATO: "The CIA’s Worst-Kept Secret: Newly Declassified Files Confirm United States Collaboration with Nazis" - "The CIA reports show that U.S. officials knew they were subsidizing numerous Third Reich veterans who had committed horrible crimes against humanity, but these atrocities were overlooked as the anti-Communist crusade acquired its own momentum. ... Bolted lock, stock, and barrel into the CIA, Gehlen’s Nazi-infested spy apparatus functioned as America’s secret eyes and ears in central Europe. The Org would go on to play a major role within NATO, supplying two-thirds of raw intelligence on the Warsaw Pact countries. Under CIA auspices, and later as head of the West German secret service until he retired in 1968, Gehlen exerted considerable influence on U.S. policy toward the Soviet bloc. "

    "U.S. Built NATO By Putting Nazi War Criminals in Charge" - Not a bourgeois source as this is on the page of a communist party, but it's basically just a list of several Nazis who got positions in NATO.

  • OP, as you study background on this issue, I recommend the 2016 documentary Donbass. Warning, there are some graphic scenes. A scene from the documentary which can give a small snapshot of some of the tensions in 2014: Former Ukrainian soldier talks about the burning of the Trade Union building in Odessa in 2014.

    I also recommend checking out any videos and/or articles by Geopolitical Economy Report regarding Ukraine, which are usually thorough in giving background and context.

    Over time, you should educate yourself on the topic of color revolutions as well as on things like the history about the Gehlen Organization/Reinhard Gehlen and OUN-B/Stepan Bandera and things like Operation Gladio to gain a comprehensive picture of the direct line of Nazi leadership going into NATO leadership and working with and fostering right-wing anti-communist forces throughout Europe and coordinating color revolutions (among other things) to suppress communism, as well as learn about the USA's "strategic imperative" to drive and maintain a wedge specifically between the east and west of Eurasia while keeping western Europe as its subordinate, to prevent the rise of a Eurasian rival to US dominance. This strategy is explained for example in Brzezinski's Grand Chessboard, with US figures recently involved in Ukraine, such as Victoria Nuland who played a role in the 2014 events, being proponents of this strain of US strategy, often euphemized with phrases like the "rules-based international order" in diplomatic language. This will help flesh out many of the "whys" of the various actors in this conflict.

    SUBJECT: The Decline and Fall of Castro

    Salient considerations respecting the life of the present Government of Cuba are:

    1. The majority of Cubans support Castro (the lowest estimate I have seen is 50 percent).
    2. There is no effective political opposition.
    3. Fidel Castro and other members of the Cuban Government espouse or condone communist influence.
    4. Communist influence is pervading the Government and the body politic at an amazingly fast rate.
    5. Militant opposition to Castro from without Cuba would only serve his and the communist cause.
    6. The only foreseeable means of alienating internal support is through disenchantment and disaffection based on economic dissatisfaction and hardship.

    If the above are accepted or cannot be successfully countered, it follows that every possible means should be undertaken promptly to weaken the economic life of Cuba. If such a policy is adopted, it should be the result of a positive decision which would call forth a line of action which, while as adroit and inconspicuous as possible, makes the greatest inroads in denying money and supplies to Cuba, to decrease monetary and real wages, to bring about hunger, desperation and overthrow of government.

    The principal item in our economic quiver would be flexible authority in the sugar legislation. This needs to be sought urgently. All other avenues should likewise be explored. But first, a decision is necessary as to the line of our conduct. Would you wish to have such a proposal prepared for the Secretary?

  • I think most communists would agree that libraries are a good resource.

    As a side note, there can also be libraries of things other than books and media, like toy libraries (so parents aren't pressured to buy tons of toys but kids can still borrow and play with different toys), tool libraries (so people in a community don't have to all individually buy tools that they might only use occasionally), home appliance libraries, electronics, musical instruments, etc.

    These services are more marginal under capitalism because they're not for profit. Under capitalism, big libraries of items which can easily be borrowed for free is not a welcome idea for capitalists seeking to profit of off false scarcity of their products, and its harder to maintain non profit services like this. In a communist society, there wouldn't really be a reason to hinder the expansion and enhancement of libraries to make them even better resources for the public.
