  • Tea, small amount of milk, needs to be well brewed and strong. Coffee, preferably weak as F with as much milk as possible to overpower the coffee (i'm not a fan) :)

No sugar no sweeteners in either.

    Tea prioritsed over coffee.

  • All well and good, but realistically any backdoor can be exploited by unfriendly as well as friendly actors.

Also does this mean government agency communication would also be unencrypted or just Joe schmoe?

  • VAT is applied to all goods irrelevant of origination. Think of it as a federal sales tax instead of a state sales tax.

There are different rates dependent on the goods and some items are VAT free (again this has nothing to do with origin but to do with the product} i.e. I'm fairly sure that in UK children's clothes are either exempt or VAt at a lower rate.

  • My home media server is an old nuc mini pc i5 16Gb RAM with attached usb storage running on a Linux distro, runs Jellyfin and a few other applications for the household.

In short yes, an old pc will work fine.

  • Sadly voting didn't fail you. US is in the same predicament UK was in after Brexit. Complacency at the expected outcome, a belief that some people couldn't be so stupid as to vote for Trump/Brexit and yet, they did in the majority.

Regardless of how fucked up the election process is, inany countries I'm not singling out the US, that is the reason that you feel failed, look at your countrymen that swallowed the snake oil and ask the question why?

  • 5th Nov 2024 - was the chance to prevent this. Trump's team made it clear on the direction they were heading and no-one heeded the warnings. 35% didn't vote and the majority of those that did voted for him, which either means they agree with the direction or were deluded into thinking it wasn't going to happen.

I'm all for protest but I don't think you have a chance of changing anything, he owns the legislature and the voting public allowed it to happend.

I'm not American or a resident of US but that's just my opinion as an outsider.

  • Sadly I still pay for a service I don't use because I have members of my house who are relucant to embrace the change. I, on the other hand, am more than happy with my Jellyfin and assorted apps to provide my content from whichever source I choose, now if only I could cadjole the others into embracing the freedom of the high seas.

  • The only superior Linux distro and DE is the one that works for you and meets your needs.

This is different for each user and, frankly, the joy of Linux that it has such a variety as to be able to meet almost everyone's needs.

For me , personally, thats Debian/Gnome with minimal tweaks but just because it works for my workflow does not make it superior.

  • For specific device recommendations, you seem to be particularly interested in making use of Black Friday deals, and thus I’d assume that price is an important factor. Unfortunately, most Linux-first vendors aren’t particularly known for offering great buck for your money. This does make it easier to choose, though.

Sadly yes, budget is important, additionally System76/Framework are out as they don't ship to my location and are quite out of my budget unfortunately and I'd rather not use a shipping agent. Given all the advice that's been given I think the points everyone has made are especially valid and I should wait until more funds are available and purchase a more suitable laptop.

I'm looking at slimbook as they can deliver with EndeavourOS OOB but still will be a harder delivery option but also have more budget options.

    Laptop Purchase

I'm looking at buying a new laptop which will run EndeavourOS exclusively, no dual boot no modding no nothing.

The choice is either Lenovo or MSI (neither have NVidea grahpics and both have intel i5/i7 chips with integrated graphichs).

Which brand is likely to be more Linux friendly?

There's also an option for a Asus but again i'm only looking at whether i'm likely to run into Linux issues, the specs are virtually the same for all.

    Thumbnail Preview Links Broken?

Link previews seem to be broken since upgrade. As you can see this isn't from all instances so is this a federation issue or an upgrade issue?

For what it's worth I get the same experience in Voyager app on Android as well as web-ui.

    Anyone else experiencing the same?

    new smartwatch advice

I'm looking to replace my Garmin Vivoactive 4 and most likely with Xiaomi or Amazfit. I'm currently struggling with the dilemma, I've narrowed it down to the following: Redmi Watch 4 - cheapest option but reviews suggest buggy and not that accurate Xiaomi Watch S3 - reasonable cost, long battery life running HyperOS Xiaomi Watch 2 - the new one not the pro, runs WearOS so battery life not as good but overall more feature rich Amazfit GTR4 - must expensive and mixed reviews Anyone owning these watches with real world experience I'd love to hear your take on them.

No editing. The Florida night sky seems different from anything I've seen before in Europe.

    Linux Newbie - Curiosity

I have an oldish Dell Latitude 7480 which doesn't meet the requirements for upgrade to Windows 11 so I thought I'd take the opportunity to install Linux on it as I only really need it for day to day web stuff / studying / media and light gaming.

My first choice was Linux Mint but, for some reason it would not recognise that the laptop had a wifi card. So I tried Manjaro but felt Arch wasn't for me so opted for Pop_OS and whilst everything I want works I thought I'd use the time to distro hop live environments to see what else was out there.

I know live envs doesn't give you the full picture but to be honest I was more interested in the aesthetic appeal of the DE.

Where my curiosity lies is this, from my understanding Linux Mint is based on underlying Ubuntu as is Pop_OS, so how come both Pop_OS and Ubuntu recognise the wi-fi card out of the box so to speak but Mint doesn't.

This is the wifi card in question:

    Lemm.ee V19.0 issues

I've noticed a distinct degradation in speed on lemm.ee since the upgrade.

The website seems fine but any app appears to struggle with the lemm.ee site.

The only exception appears to be Voyager app and it may be that as a web app it doesn't appear to have the same problem.

Jerboa can't login, says can't connect to instance, this is not a specific v19 issue as I have an account on reddthat.com which is also running v19.0 and that logs in without issue.

Voyager struggles to load my profile.

I migrated here from fmhy and then feddit.uk after it appeared to be abandoned, I'd really not like to migrate again but it's starting look like that's the only option ;-(

TIL: You can pin items in Androids share tray.

lemmy.world I got android 14 and the share sheet still sucks - Lemmy.World

First of all the upgrade removed my pinned contacts and apps, so I had to start the game of whack a mole all over again. The default suggested apps and contacts were apps I never used and people I never contact. You get 5 options now instead of 4 which is ok, but you can’t have two rows of favorites...

This I actually learned today from another user's pain post about Android 14.

I've been using Android phones for about 5 years and had no idea ¯(ツ)/¯
