  • As someone who takes a similarly nuanced interest in history, I truly appreciate you calling this out. There’s so much subtlety, no matter where you look, no matter what era is being discussed.

  • Wise is super easy to set up, and they let you do currency exchanges for pretty low percentage fees, but they’re based in the UK iirc. My plan is to use that as a transfer account once I can get accounts in the EU itself and Switzerland (maybe Japan too)

  • In point of fact, I’ve opened a foreign euro-denominated account and have started transferring some cash there, so that I am not starting from absolutely nothing if I have to fuck off from this place permanently. Gonna also look into getting a Swiss and perhaps Japanese account too, if possible.

  • I mean it IS retaliation though. It’s retaliation for thinking absurd tariffs are a great idea to apply to one’s allies.

And please do note that some particular countries who were until very recently considered geopolitical adversaries by our government (Russia; Belarus) are NOT targeted by any of the tariffs.

This is what happens when you switch teams, and all of your allies are not a fan of you switching teams, and they don’t want to be tied to your currency standard anymore.

  • You can get a Coral TPU for 40 bucks or so.

You can get an AMD APU with a NN-inference-optimized tile for under 200.

Training can be done with any relatively modern GPU, with varying efficiency and capacity depending on how much you want to spend.

What price point are you trying to hit?

  • lol I’ve been calling this ever since it became apparent that, shortly after “liberation day”, most of the holders of US sovereign debt all coordinated to start gradually selling their bonds. THAT is actual 4D geoeconomics chess. We shoot ourselves in the dick with tarrifs, hurt all of our allies, so they respond by putting our balls into a big fiscal vise and are all slowly turning the handle tighter and tighter together. If the imbeciles in charge don’t reverse course at some point in the VERY near future, this is going to lead to the USD being dropped as the global standard. And considering the shit we’re pulling lately, maybe that’s not the worst thing.

  • If my grandfather were still alive and tried to tell me literally anything about network maintenance, I’d say “ok sure grandpa, don’t worry about it”, and then do it anyways after he goes to bed, because I know how networking works as a component of having over a decade of devops and homelab experience, and he would never notice.

    I fucking love Boston's energy

Sorry for the link from The Other Site, but I thought this was too good to pass up. This is attitude is one of the main reasons I love this city so much. When the chips are down, we don’t fuck around. No tolerance or quarter for fascist bigots.

    Fuck you Hesgeth rule

Government websites now no longer mention perhaps the single most selfless, incredible, and strategically significant coordinated effort by a community of First Nation military personnel in service to a country that did worse than nothing to deserve their loyalty - and yet they played, and succeeded in, a pivotal role that literally helped win the pacific campaign.

Any veterans on here: I really do hope you’re furious at this.

PLAN's new amphibious landing support vessels

It’s a very obvious solution once you take a look at what a lot of their coastline looks like. Elevated armor delivery. Skip the beach. Dump ‘em’ straight on the coastal roads. Makes a shocking amount of sense. Definitely much more specific of a use case than the more general purpose landing support vessels that the USN/USMC employs, but for their primary missions and targets in the next decade, this is exactly the hardware that will significantly increase the CCP’s chances.

This is the an evolution of the combined arms amphibious assault tactics that the US has refined for the better part of a century. For heavily built up targets - specifically those that need to be assaulted and captured quickly for any reasonable chance of success (read: Taiwan + establishing a foothold on the island), this is PERFECT. This basically lets you dump 1000 tanks and a ton of IADS and 100k infantrymen in like, an hour.

That’s a paradigm shift right there.

Personal commentary: reading the summary (I did not watch the interview live), I’m not really seeing anything that assuages my concerns about his mental acuity. More importantly, I’m not seeing anything that indicates he’s being anything even close to as pragmatic as Macron is being with the election they’re doing now in France, with regards to just trying to make sure the fascists do not fucking win. I must admit I’m feeling quite pessimistic about things.
