  • Does my PC with GTX 1660 count lol? No fancy ray tracing, no DLSS, no 4k, simple 1080p 60 fps gaming.

  • Have you tried fcitx with the Anthy plugin? I use that for Japanese.

    https://github.com/fcitx5-android/fcitx5-android

  • It's not thaaaat bad c'mon guys! I mean I'm sometimes forced to setup/debug something on my family/relative's windows PC and all I take is a pill to keep my nausea under control that's it.

  • Same. The UI is pretty good and modern, they support TOPT and cards as well and the development is being done at a good pace.

  • I used an app called Noice from F-Droid which has a lot of pleasant background noises (including white noises which I sometimes use while sleeping). One update, the author suddenly added internet permission, pulled out all the noise music files from the app and put them behind a server. Now it only works if you have an active internet connection OR you buy a premium.

Thankfully, I still have the last "good" version.

  • Do open an issue on GitHub for whatever you feel needs work. This project is being actively worked upon, I've seen stuff get implemented within a day even!

  • Have you tried this active fork of OpenBoard? The dev added support for multilingual typing months ago. This has Material You theme as well as glide typing (needs to be turned on manually).

  • Paying education loans even after 20 years of working in public service? Seems like a failure of the education system. I'm from Europe, also been to India a lot on business, and never have I seen anything of this magnitude. You can get a good education even in India for a very nominal tuition fee that middle-class parents are also able to cover without taking out loans. For poor families, it's virtually nothing in good state universities. The idea is that education will empower even the poor and they'll be able to get a good job and become tax paying citizens. Not like if you're poor, we're still gonna crush the heck out of you with more debt. The latter seems to be the strategy employed in the US. In most European countries, education is virtually free covered by taxes. Of course taxes are high but it benefits everyone in terms of healthcare and education. Is that really so bad? Isn't it the government's job to make sure EVERYONE has access to good healthcare and education? Then why does it feel that it is a money-oriented corporation running the country rather than a government?

Sorry, went on a rant there. Whenever I see something like this it just makes my blood boil. Teachers, firefighters, nurses still paying student loans after a decade or two, that's a failure of the education system right there.

  • Detroit: Become Human fits the bill perfectly! It's a great game with some of the hardest choices you'll ever make in a game period.

  • The ads Google must have personalised for you based on that would have been interesting. But everyone on Lemmy uses ad blockers so you prolly wouldn't even have noticed xD

  • I only played via Steam so I wouldn't know. I hear it's a good deal, but I've made it a point to not accept such good deals from BigTech. Have gotten screwed over too many times. Remember when Google Photos allowed unlimited storage?

  • Ah old days... I used to boot into Windows 10 just for gaming but when Valve's Proton matured to the point that all my games could work on Linux I very happily nuked it out of existence. But yeah if someone plays Fortnite or needs Adobe products then you still can't do much unfortunately.

  • Great list! One suggestion: Try Helium's OpenBoard fork for keyboard. It has tons of features like full Material You theming, glide typing, multilingual language support as well as autocorrect and suggestion support. I've been waiting for autocorrect to be added in FlorisBoard for more than an year now.

  • Waiting for autocorrect to be implemented on it for years now :) Good to see new commits on the project.

  • Ah got it. Must be because I'm using the Simple Gallery app and it does have issues when cropping PNGs.

    https://github.com/SimpleMobileTools/Simple-Gallery/issues/2349

  • They have it planned if you go through the ReadMe in the repo, some work needs to be done before that.

OpenBoard now supports Material You dynamic colors for Android 12+!

If you have ever searched for open source keyboards, you might have come across OpenBoard. But that project hasn't seen development in more than an year. Thankfully, there is a fork of it that is being worked upon quite actively. It already supports autocorrect, glide typing, user-defined dictionaries, multilingual typing and now material you themeing as well.

  • I wonder if you can install their android app using WayDroid and then run 1080p/4k streams.

Prolly not worth the effort considering they're treating linux users like shit, they don't deserve our money.

Simple Mobile Tools is being sold to a for-profit firm ZipoApps

    Source.

Simple Mobile apps have been very popular among FOSS enthusiasts. I've personally been using the Gallery, Contacts and the Phone app since a few years now. It's a shame that it has come to this, will be on the lookout for their forks.

A drunk person wandering outside will always find their way back but a drunk bird probably won't.

Explanation: Random walk in 2D has a unity probability of making it back to the starting point as the number of steps approach infinity but random walk in 3D only has ~0.34.

View from the Tyholt Tower restaurant in Trondheim, Norway

This was taken around half a decade ago when I visited Norway. Beautiful city and people! The Tyholt Tower is a 124m tall communications tower (probably the tallest building in all of Norway) that houses a restaurant and an observation deck. It revolves and completes one full revolution in an hour so you can enjoy a good meal and capture in all of Trondheim!

Notice a small islet on the top right. That's Munkholmen, an islet that has in the past served as a place of execution, a monastery, a fortress, a prison, and also a World War II anti-aircraft gun station!

Had visited India this summer. The heat was unbearable in places like Delhi but got better as we moved to the hills up north.

If everyone moved to open source non-profit solutions, the tech industry would lose billions

I'm a FOSS (free and open source software) contributor and enthusiast. So I prefer to use such products (Lemmy instead of Reddit, Linux instead of Windows, Firefox instead of Chrome, Signal instead of WhatsApp, you get the idea). Was just thinking that if everyone moved to such solutions, the tech and ad industry would lose billions of dollars. That would translate to governments losing billions of dollars in tax revenue. Would such a move ever be encouraged then by the governments?
