  • Or a USB data blocker (an adapter with only the power cables connected). But I guess the concern is that people will want to connect their phone to their car's entertainment and navigation system.

Maybe the best solution would be "don't use work phones for personal stuff or personal phones for work." And if it's a personal vehicle, only connect your personal phone.

  • Capitalism isn't "when people get paid for working." And people getting paid for doing a job isn't the problem highlighted in this post. In any case, there are any number of ways people might be motivated to do something useful.

  • Last week, Trump went so far as to claim that Chinese President Xi Jinping had called the White House to negotiate a deal, another claim that Chinese officials deny.

How hard would it be to prank him by spoofing caller ID and pretending to be Xi?

  • Right now if their lives were to become completely unaffordable they would blame "libs", trans people and non-whites. Fascism tends to become more popular when times are tough, not less. So it's hard to see the way through this except through some kind of violent conflict, or a depression so long and harsh that it becomes impossible to pretend the current government isn't responsible. But that would also give this regime time to consolidate its power.

  • They've gotten used to it in different political circumstances. But as people start to see how an authoritarian and vindictive fascist government works with surveillance tech to invade and endanger people's lives, attitudes to things like always-on cameras may start to shift.

  • Well at least there are all kinds of checks and balances to prevent big tech and the US Government from abusing this information, right? Thank goodness we have no reason to worry about it being used for political surveillance and identifying who to send to foreign concentration camps, or anything like that.

  • Certainly there's a lot of strategic voting going on. But you don't see the Liberal (centrist) seat count increasing as the NDP goes down: the gains are all with the Conservatives. If it were a matter of progressives deciding to just consolidate with Liberals, you'd expect to see the Liberal seat count go up as the smaller parties went down. To me this suggests either that some people are flipping directly from left to right or that there is a general rightwards drift, with right-wing Liberals going over to Conservatives and left-wing strategic voters filling in some of the gap they leave for the Liberals. In either case it's concerning that when the Conservatives fielded their most far-right leader so far, their share of the seats went up.

  • Yes, we narrowly avoided going down the Trump route this time, but I don't find this picture particularly encouraging (NDP, Green and BQ are the three most progressive parties):

It's not straightforward to understand that, since this is a chart of seats not votes, and you can get weird effects with first-past-the-post and strategic voting, but it certainly looks like the electorate is moving rightwards at the expense of progressives.

  • It's not just younger Gen X. I'm oldish Gen X and loads of us were programming computers for fun from the late 1970s on. By the early 1990s you couldn't really avoid computers, and you couldn't use them without at least a basic level of understanding. By that time many of us had been using them for a decade or more. It's those who grew up without computers (before they became common) and those who grew up with iPhones that have a problem with tech.

Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan was arrested April 25 by federal authorities who are investigating whether she tried to help an undocumented immigrant avoid arrest after he appeared in her courtroom last week, officials confirmed.

Brady McCarron, spokesman for U.S. Marshals Service in Washington, D.C., confirmed Dugan was arrested at about 8 a.m. at the Milwaukee County Courthouse and is in federal custody.

FBI Director Kash Patel posted on X about the arrest.

"Just NOW, the FBI arrested Judge Hannah Dugan out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin on charges of obstruction — after evidence of Judge Dugan obstructing an immigration arrest operation last week," Patel wrote. "We believe Judge Dugan intentionally misdirected federal agents away from the subject to be arrested in her courthouse, Eduardo Flores Ruiz, allowing the subject — an illegal alien — to evade arrest."

Before arriving in Russia on August 13, 2023, Gloss was travelling around Europe. On his Vkontakte page bio, he wrote: "I ran away from home (and) traveled the world. I hate fascism."

On April 4, 2024, he was killed, likely during a Russian offensive near Bakhmut, however, his burial in the U.S. did not take place until December 2024, Important Stories reports.
