  • I don't recall all of my history for these civilizations off the top of my head, but Egypt, Rome, USSR, and perhaps the others too, had some absolutely terrifying power dynamics by the end. So many assassinations, outright cruelty and sadism, and so on. Lots of really short power reigns ending in assassinations or burning cities. I think part of what makes these leadership hierarchies topple, is that you can't trust anyone at any time for any reason, because no one follows established rules, and whoever can strategically outthink others, or win by strength, get to sit on top. Stalin was one paranaoid person, as was every single late stage roman emperor after Marcus Aurelius (Not counting his son).

When you're constantly fearing for your life, how can you not become tyrannical I guess?

  • I don't think you understood my post at all. I don't think you know much about Denmark either, what the people of Denmark generally believe, or even about George Orwell since you decided to link his book in this context.

Edit: Anyway, it wasn't some grand political statement. It was generally just a rant about Trump, turned into some pointless uneducated musings about human psychology. Since it apparently isn't obvious from my rant, I've never liked the man, but what I tried to explain is that I like even less what he reveals about human beings. Because there are lots of people around the world, who are ready to follow the exact same archetype.

  • OH NO! HE SAID IT! HE WILL BE SHADOW BANNED! LEMMY WILL LOSE ALL SPONSORSHIP! THE ALGORITHM WILL....

Oh wait. I'm on sane social media. Never mind.

  • I ran two half-marathons, does that mean I can say that I technically ran a marathon?

  • The only ethical way to consume american digital products is through piracy.

  • Let's see how US ambassadors and diplomats will feel in 5 years, with all the bridges to allies that are currently being burned.

  • Dane here. Can we just give him Hans Island, and tell him it's all that's left of Greenland and Canada now that the ice has melted?

  • They have to understand that they are more or less allowing Trump to set everything on fire. Every single one of US allies at this point hate him. He has alienated Canada, and all of Europe. He's destabilizing NATO, and therefore the entire foundation of western democracy and defense. I doubt Australians, the Japanese, or any other established country is particularly fond of him either, or they won't be, when he sets his sights on them.

Long-term this is a massive shot in the foot. He may be able to throw his weight around in a cage like a gorilla right now, but as allies slowly realize that the US can fundementally no longer be trusted, that cage is going to shrink. In the coming years we will likely see massive military escalation across all non-US western nations, and EU as a whole are already making moves to pull ressources out of the US.

Now that France actually is deployed in Greenland, annexation would mean instigating war with a nation with atomic weapons. Not to mention that the whole exercise is pointless - the US have always had the right to deploy in Greenland, they have always been able to establish a military presence. In fact, if he wants the golden dome there, there is an established procedure he has to follow, which historically hasn't been a problem.

Denmark has done so much shit for the US through the years. We allowed them to hide nuclear missiles in the ice during project iceworm. They never cleaned up after themselves, and now Greenland has a nuclear hazard. We even forcibly removed a whole people (Really shitty of us too), the entire city of Thule (Uummannaq), because the US wanted a huge fucking base right where they lived. Guess who paid for those reparations 40 years later to compensate the Inuits who had their entire livelihood and home destroyed? Denmark did.

To top it off, there literally is no threat there right now. Not from the Russians. Not from the Chinese. The only threat is Trump. Yes, the Russians are trying to sabotage infrastructure, and the Chinese are trying to make investments. But NATO has pretty much been able to handle that.

  • Might have to be a saving throw actually

  • At nedsætte en arbejdsgruppe er sådan et herligt dansk diplomatisk våben. Det er overhovedet ikke Trump agtigt lol

  • Yeah it's honestly hard to understand for me and come to terms with. Most Americans I know don't want any part in this either. At least some things do give me hope, Fox News interviewed our foreign minister (Also former prime minister), and.... Well I never thought I'd say this about Fox News but... It was actually really sensible and a good interview?

I mean... Even the most Trump fanatical Republican must be experience a bit of an identity crisis by now, surely?

  • I've played dungeons and dragons a lot. Does that count?

I put on my wizards hat

Edit: God, I realized that the joke I referenced is so old and niche by now in internet culture I have to provide a link: https://www.albinoblacksheep.com/text/bloodninja

  • Danish citizen here. This is really weird. The US have been our allies for decades, but apparently here we are.

I am mostly worried about the people of Greenland in all of this. I've met many people from Greenland, and they're great people.

  • My group plays 2014 edition, and already here I feel like every class perk is frontloaded and stacked really early. There doesn't seem much point to level beyond 7-10 in some cases.

Also, there are so many extra rules, extra features, extra options that experienced DM's will include that it's intense to learn on top of also having to adjust to a new setting. In my 90's DND group our homebrew rules tended more towards simplification in many ways. But maybe it's just my nostalgia glasses.

None of it is a dealbreaker though, it's just a different way of playing. The only thing I still don't like is how excruciatingly long encounters sometimes take, with everyone having to go through a whole turn of deciding what they want to do, rather than declaring it up front like we used to.

My DM back then also did a lot to cut down how long combat took.

  • Brb, setting up a Lemmy server in Red Star OS

  • Yeah, maybe a lot of movies are mixed for the theater experience. I have a JBL soundbar with detachable back speakers, and I do struggle a lot with modern movies.

  • I quickly adjusted to the new AC rules, but classes and races sure have changed lol. Tieflings? Apparently they were a thing in Planescape, but I don't remember them. And playable orcs, and Dragonborn surprised me too.

Also, so many magic wielders. With the old wizard style of magic, it felt a bit more rare and magical to me. Magic is almost too easy to come by in newer editions. Maybe its just me.

All in all, if feels like DND has exploded in a variety of options and possibilities which is cool. Also, old dual class system and multiclassing we never used at all. Newer systems actually seem solid.

  • It's weird how nice most people are when you are face to face with them. Spend enough time on X, and you forget it.
