You know many countires have implemented something as simple as that. Singapore has PayNow, India has UPI, Thailand has prompt pay. And they've had it for about half a decade or more. West (EU, US, UK are catching up). Commercial banking is still alive in these Asian countires. And it's not so hard for banks to adapt.

The monopoly is the problem, someone using a pixel, using android, browsing using chrome, using Google search to find your website, visit an article website where you sign in via Google, see Google ads throughout, click on an affiliate link to buy a featured product of the blog and post using Google pay.
This is classic monopoly and Google chrome is small dab middle of it, if you want to break a chain you start from breaking it in the middle instead of the end like Google pay. Hopefully other things will follow soon.
I don't know if UK ever had the gaming cafes but they're still common in east, if you can't afford console/game, it made so much sense to go to gaming cafe, meet your friends there and you can play from library of hundreds of games without having to pay for games themselves.
I know it's still more expensive than buying hardware and games long term, but at least that way you don't lease console and then pay for games as well, and invest in controllers, good headphones etc etc.
