  • Will do right now. I don't want to use either Patreon nor Paypal, but would instantly donate on LiberaPay.

  • They are unethical because they're hard to repair, but cam be used after discharging, while the ring will just become trash.

The two years will only be reachable by using it little, which defeats its purpose, as well.

  • Oh no, please, not more spam. I don't need notifications, for anything.

I will look at communities when I have time to read and write replies, not when the buzzing rectangle in my pocket tells me to.

The only notifications I have on is for phone calls, even that not all the time.

Also, those notifications are what makes traditional "social" media addictive (among other things), we should not do that, for ethical reasons. We know that it has mental health effects and causes other issues.

The time of people matters. Having people get info unless they opt out is a dark pattern.

I wonder how many health effects this would cause for many people.

  • This might be a good place to ask:

    • Where do you donate to?
    • What might be some good areas to donate to for Linux phones? What are some important small projects that desperately need funds and make much of a difference.

Sure, I could donate to postmarketOS, but they're doing quite well and I'd rather donate somewhere it's much more needed, especially projects that

    • support mainline kernel development
    • support open hardware efforts
  • It's a throwaway item, it's unethical.

  • Yeah, I don't use Movim, but I was waiting for this. Iʼve considered donating before, this just seems like a neat project. Will have to see whether I can find it on LiberaPay.

  • Which Movim has implemented and will have in a release near you very soon...

  • That's just an Android ROM.

  • Apparently there is a sizable number of Chinese XMPP users these days.

Probably because XMPP via HTTP is something that looks a lot like web browsing (as long as there are no calls), which should make it easy to keep up connections to servers that are not censored. I myself know some that have quite a few channels named something in Chinese, but I won't mention it here to not make it easier to find for the censors.

I've heard rumors that XMPP mostly works in China, but I cannot verify that. If anyone here uses XMPP in China, I'd be interested in a reply.

  • I've used it a lot and even heavily promoted it for a while, but no longer do, as it still does not work well enough for my liking. It all seems buggy in general.

  • Jump
    1. Crypto currencies? Why?
    2. Don't give your keys away.
    3. Why would anyone want to use unstable fake money..?

Crypto "currencies" are just a tech bro dystopia, just avoid it.

  • And https://movim.eu/ is a federated choice, allowing you to choose your provider, just like you do for your phone or emails.

  • They also use an Android kernel with libhybris, which means they rely on a lot of Android components and are not very independent.

I just wish they would use mainline kernels instead.

Also, their App Support is literally an Android in a container with some proprietary integration parts into the proprietary UI.

Just two things would make it a lot more interesting:

    • Mainline kernel
    • Fully FOSS

Pretty sure the proprietary UI is the reason there are many more apps for the other phone distros.

  • There's still no free choice, users will be bound to their provider and whatever path the enshittification will take.

  • But does not allow you to freely choose a provider, which makes it far easier to enshittify if people cannot leave, something like https://mov.im/ could solve this.
