I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re refering to as Linux, is not in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!
Yes, fiat is a better ledger system for currency. Proof-of-work crypto has gotta be the most energy inefficient design in the history of humanity.
what would you call that?
I call it capitalism. As long as the bourgeois controls money - whether that's gold, fiat or crypto curriencies - then it's going to drive a system based on infinite growth and consumption

It's an environmental disaster where the worst people in the world use vast resources to power and cool entropy machines
This is both believable, and actually makes me feel safer about world security
I'm not saying that discouraging reproduction is eugenics. I'm saying that @[email protected]'s attempt at defining Eugenics is wrong. Saying it's about producing the best "GENES" possible is just post-hoc reasoning to make it sounds more scientific.
Eugenics is based on 19th century racial science. If someone is advocating for any sort of population control that uses that framework (of bettering the "race"), they're doing eugenics.
A good example of what's not eugenics is China's one-child policy. It wasn't aimed at creating a "better" race of any kind, and It actually provided exemptions for ethnic minorities. The goal wasn't to create a better type of human race, it was to prevent the population from growing faster that what the economy could support. IMO it was probably unnecessary, but definitely wasn't eugenics.
However, if there was an alternate reality where china instituted the one-child policy only for ethnic minorities in an effort to make the nation a pure Han state, that would be eugenics. If they did it based on IQ, that would be eugenics. And if they exempted minorities from the policy out of a belief that the Han were inferior, that would also be genetics
These threads always attract a variety of reactionary opinions
[edit] whoops, didn't mean to reply. Yours were not the reactionary opinions lol. after the revolution, all tetrapods will rightly be understood to be fish
Eugenics is about producing the best GENES possible
"Eugenics" was a term decades before "genes"
Even if the etymology was different, you'd still be very wrong [about what "eugenics" is]
dude loves being hospitalized
Maybe he's made some comments that could be interpreted that way. But he hasn't officially changed anything. The catechism is clear. Homosexual acts (including desire) are unnatural, and a sin. But you should also love the sinner, and only God can judge
is like saying I love lgbt people but think they’re sinning…
This is literally pope Francis' position LOL
Is that with flatpak?
I just make little videos for myself a couple times a year. So I'm far from a pro. But holy shit kdenlive and blender are powerful programs (blender moreso, but kden is still pretty cool)
Gotta wonder if they'll do a political purge
Your gonna install it, click settings, advanced, and look for “Network Interface.” There will be a drop down menu. Click it and select the mullvad option. Mine is “wg0-mullvad” then click apply.
This step is important. If you don't do it, then qb will use any network interface. So as you're running the VPN it'll probably use that. But if the vpn drops, qb will look for the interface that does work, work and just use that. So you'll still be able to torrent, even if the VPN is off. By selecting the mullvad (or whatevre your vpn is) option, you're telling the app to only use that vpn, and not the normal connection.
Also, the search feature on qbittorrent is great. I can usually find what I'm looking for without ever opening a browser
My "I'm not a fascist" swastika has people asking a lot of questions answered by my swastika
Ah, cool. That sounds useful for like if you're recording at a protest/action
Wow, too bad they didn't at least open-source it. Take it off the app stores and disconnect the cloud service, but at least let others develop it
The fascists (including the blue ones) are really doing a speedrun to see how quickly they can destroy US academic and technological hegemony

Are there any apps for recording police interactions?
imagine an app that is sort of like a panic button. You get pulled over, you open the app and hit the button which then (depending on your preferences), starts recording/streaming video and audio, locks the phone, and maybe starts recording accelerometer/gps data, etc.
It would need to be thoroughly developed/tested before actually it could be ethically recommended.
What do you think? Good idea? Bad idea? unfeasible? Already existing?

DAE feel like DuckDuckGo is now just as good as google for the vast majority of searches?
Not because DDG got better, but just because google got worse.
google is still better for site-specific searches, and google scholar still has minimal AI slop

What's up with employee-owned companies/co-ops? How does it compare to a strong union?
I'm interested in leftist opinions of employee-owned companies. If that's still too broad, could you give some examples of employees buying their employer out? Or are there other ways, like with a union?
Also, what's up with King Arthur's and Bob's Red Mill?

Do you make your own clothing?

Im learning how to see right now. I've just someone some bags and pillows so far, but I really want to make clothing. I'll start simple, but I'd eventually like to make the things that (imo) are the hardest to get as a trans woman: panties, bras, and pants. Have any of you made these? Do you have any resources or communities you recommend?

Pelosi told Biden: You’re dragging down Democrats
I did not have 'Pelosi takes on the gerontocracy' on my 2024 bingo card
One Pelosi ally said it was possible she would press Biden publicly to give up his spot atop the Democratic ticket.
“The speaker does not want to call on him to resign, but she will do everything in her power to make sure it happens,” this person said, referring to Biden quitting the race.

Mississippi Goddam

"Thank God for Mississippi" is an adage used in the United States, particularly in the South, that is generally used when discussing rankings of U.S. states.[1] Examples include rankings of educational achievement, business opportunities,[2] obesity rates,[3] overall health,[4] the poverty rate,[5](https://en.m.wikipedia.org

Is Biden the accelerationist candidate?
Biden has done more to undermine the US empire in the last 8 months than Trump did in 4 years. Biden is exposing the contradictions of US empire in a way that Trump could never.
If Trump was president, then the mainstream narrative would be that the genocide in Gaza was simply because of Trump and Bibi's leadership. And you know what? Given how past presidents were able to rein in Israel when polite society started sympathizing with Palestinians, it would be believable. Instead, we get to see front and center, how a man that's been at the top echelons of us foreign policy for decades approves and supports genocide. This is the establishment's genocidal war.
In other words, Trump is perceived as an aberration, even when hes just continuing the same US foreign policy that weve been doing for decades. Moving the embassy to Jerusalem is still framed as entirely Trump's decision, even though he was just enacting a policy that Biden voted for in the 90s. And of course Biden did nothing

Music podcasts?
Looking for recommendations of music podcasts. The only one I listen to is Afropop worldwide, which is one of my favorite podcasts/radio shows . I realize there aren't a ton of straight-up music podcasts because of copyright issues, but what have you got?

Only a fraction of funds needed to provide aid to millions in the war-torn country is secured, the groups say.

The nature podcast went from having one of the best intros to one of the worst
Their original intro was a banger. It's something like a ringtone trying to do pop punk. 5 seconds into the intro, the hosts start telling you the upcoming stories as the music fades in and out. A host tells the date and her name, then the other hosts introduce themselves. 40 seconds in, the show starts. The whole time that song was fun. A+ intro. I would have no problem listening to the intro anywhere.
Compare that to their current intro. It's a slow dollar store Brian eno jingle that swells as you hear the most cliche'd clips about what science is. You have an old professorial European talking about "data". You have an annoying kid asking a question about light. 40 seconds into the intro, and you're just getting the headlines. That just takes a few seconds, then you're forced to suffer through 10 more seconds of the Brian eNot.
An example of the old intro: https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-019-02159-6 after just 5 seconds you're hearing about mollusk fossils

Open source e reader

I recently got a Sony prs 600 e reader from 2009. The battery is at the end of its life (It lasts about 3 days with heavy reading, and a couple weeks without reading). No backlight, no Wi-Fi, just an SD card that I can load epub files and small PDFs. The screen is slow and the contrast isn't the best. The "touch screen" is the old resistive type where you really need to press with your nail or a stylus. Despite all those flaws, it's fantastic. It's just good enough for reading books.
I read with large text so I don't even need to put on glasses, and it's easier to read than an actual book. Combined with Anna's archive, I'm reading more than I ever have before. No Wi-Fi nd slow screen make the experience feel closer to an actual book than a smartphone. It's great to just have a device do one thing without distractions popping up every minute.
It's all old technology, but it's so rare to see anyone with an e-reader. Probably because they're still expensive and designed to microtra

Democracy rule

I need y'all to understand: Biden isnt losing votes from the far left. He never had those votes, and could never get them.
He's losing the votes of Muslims and Arabs in Michigan and Philly. He's losing the votes of moderates who are watching Israel's final solution in horror. He's losing the votes of Latinos and Haitians who see the southern border is getting more militarized and more violent every year
[Edit] to be 100% clear: If you oppose Israel's war on Palestine, but plan on voting for Biden this November, this post isn't about you.
