I do support alternatives like Mailbox and Tuta and hope they grow. I also think the complaints about Proton are a bit overblown, especially the "trump supporting" tweet. But I would like to look more into the account closure story.
Proton is (so far that I've seen) the only alternative to the Gsuite that is polished and complete enough for non-tech people like my extended family to most easily adapt to. Since my goal is getting people off of Google, not getting them onto a perfect alternative, I continue to promote Proton... Hope that makes sense!
People think sure, I don't mind them knowing which songs I listen to so they can give me recs and wrapped... But Spotify isn't just tracking which songs you are listening to the most. They are tracking every location, device, phone, PC, car, network, IP, WiFi, connected devices, what other apps you have on your devices, and more. With the data they have, someone can pinpoint everywhere you've been, every minute since you got the app, even who you've been with and what mood you were in. You can request the data and it's mindblowing. It's way more than is necessary or appropriate to track to give you a top songs list once a year. And other entities, including governments and whoever bought data from their latest beaches, has it too.
It's a point of concentration to get a message out and get people involved on a large scale. It's a concrete thing people can get behind together, to send a message to those in power that they can't just roll over us. It's how we used to keep corporations and governments in check. They aren't afraid of us. They need to be.
I don't expect corporations to care about anything over profits, but I dont have to give them my money if I dont agree with how they do business. If enough people did the same, suddenly caring about humanity becomes the profitable choice.
Target is under a national boycott because after George Floyd's murder they made a big deal of increasing racially equality though a huge commitment hiring more black employees, selling goods from black-owned businesses and suppliers, and so on. The minute Trump got elected they canceled all of that and denounced "DEI". They are the corporate poster-boy for throwing away values for MAGA, and drive the rest of the industry in the same direction with their example.
