“Books were only one type of receptacle where we stored a lot of things we were afraid we might forget. There is nothing magical in them, at all. The magic is only in what books say, how they stitched the patches of the universe together into one garment for us.” Professor Faber

  • Still plugging away at Field of Roses by Philip Pullman

It’s been a slow reading week as I prepare for gardening weather, but I’m going to finish this book this week. I want to make sure I reread Project Hail Mary before the movie comes out!

  • Not all of these are social media sites, but this list is my social internet path

Bolt dot com & SciFi channel chatrooms

    AIM & Yahoo chatrooms

    ICQ & IRC

Soulseek (I count it because I used to hang in the chatrooms quite a bit)

Eyeball chat, then followed friends to Camfrog chat, before both were enshittified

    MySpace

    Facebook and dabbling in Instagram

Reddit, left after Apollo went offline

    Mastadon and dabbled in Snapchat

    Threads

    BlueSky, still here

    Lemmy then Piefed, still here

  • Sweet!! I’m going to attend Starfleet Academy!!

  • Good advice, the extended movie is better and that low point I think is important to the story.

I wanted to love Afterlife. I didn’t see it in theaters, but after the reaction to Answer the Call, I was so excited for a new Ghostbusters movie that I bought and watched it the day it came out on iTunes. I cannot emphasize enough how much of a disappointment Afterlife was. I have not watched it a second time and I have no interest in watching Frozen Throne.

I grew up on Ghostbusters movies and cartoons from the 80-90s. I just get so mad that the new ones forgot what a Ghostbusters movie is and I feel robbed of a sequel ATC.

  • It was the CGI Spengler at the end that sealed the deal of garbage movie 🤮

At least ATC honored Harold Ramis with a bust

  • AIs aren't trained to produce correct answers, but seemingly correct answers

I prefer to say “algorithmically common” instead of “seemingly correct” but otherwise agree with you.

  • Yep, I met my partner through OKC just before they enshittified. I also had used it to meet folks when I travelled for work. I had a note on my profile that I travelled a lot and just wanted to see new cities and eat good food. Surprisingly, I had far more platonic meetups than creepy guys trying to hook up, which I stated I wasn’t looking for in my profile.

I was a very very early adopter of OKC. I remember when it was more of a social media website with quizzes and badges than just dating. I’m still friends with a few people I met there in the early days.

  • Games: Epistory and Nanotale. Both typing games from Fishing Cactus. Absolutely beautiful games that have interesting stories and you get to practice with your typing skills. I love both of these games so much.

Tv: Sliders. It was fairly popular when it was running and got kind of weird at the end, but I love that show. It was one that my family got together to watch every episode each week when they were on broadcast. I was also part of an early online petition to save the show and move it to the SciFi channel. I was also part of the early online petition to save MST3K, back when online petitions actually worked.

Movie: Ghostbusters Answer the Call. People will disagree with me but I unapologetically DGAF. That movie is hilarious and I love putting it on when I work out. It’s a far better Ghostbusters movie than the last two garbage ones that were put out. It has everything from the original: dark adult horror comedy about scientists who save the world. The last two were not true GB movies, they are family friend teen coming of age movies with a plot that depended so heavily on nostalgia that they felt like a crappy cash grab. ATC is my second favorite GB movie behind only the original. Holtzman is my hero!

  • Busy and buzzing for sure. I grew up in more cozy and quiet and I found it too boring because you have to get in a car and drive to see people (at least in the US). There were great nature paths to walk around, but I much prefer people watching while I walk around. I also prefer to be able to walk to as many places as I can. If I can walk to the grocery store, I’ll gladly walk there every other day for food shopping vs one big trip less often.

  • Just a caveat, please understand any fashion advice I give comes from a 40+ yo nerdy pinkish mostly wears lounge/jeans and tshirt kind of lady. I did work in women’s fashion retail for a while and I pay attention to trends, even if I don’t participate much. At least my advice is more relevant at this time because young kids are wearing the same things I wore in high school 20+ years ago; Jnco style jeans, tanks, that 2000s style 🤣

thank you so much! Is tylenol a form of paracetamol?

Yes, it is. It’s also known as acetaminophen. Most folks will use ibuprofen (Motrin) as an anti-inflammatory or pain reliever. I do not take NSAIDs due to kidney issues. That was more a suggestion on your preferred pain reliever.

Scarves are awesome! If it matters, I have a very mild hourglass figure, although shoulders are fairly broad. I already wear a ring, but I def should try out more jewellery.

Scarves are great. Try on a few at a store to make sure they look ok on you. They may bring attention to your shoulders, but it tends to draw more attention to the neck area in my experience. They can also be tied in different knots to bring more attention to that and away from your shoulders.

I haven't tried out long tunic shirts before, so I'll try that!

Try a few on before purchasing or if you order online, order from somewhere with easy returns, just in case you don’t like them. Depending on the cut (I hate the puffy arm ones), they can make the shoulders look more prominent, but the flair at the bottom tends to balance that out. Here is a picture of one that I have, the one in the top middle. You may have to look around for a style that works with you or is a little more gender neutral as you gain confidence.

Another option that’s a little more neutral is the tank top with a button up. I do this one in the summer when I want a light layer on my shoulders, paired with jeans or a skirt. I will get cold if air blows over my skin, so I constantly wear layers. Here is an example of that. It may take a bit away from the hourglass shape, but you could do a tighter tank top underneath, which is how I usually style it.

  • Appreciate the mention! GasX is my go to for any kind of stomach discomfort, even before tums. It’s great!

Off topic, but simethicone should be the #1 item in any bunny parent’s rabbit first aid kit. I get unflavored baby gas drops from the infant section at the grocery store. I give it at the first sign of discomfort; belly pressing, not eating, etc. A small bottle has literally saved me thousands of dollars in middle of the night emergency vet visits.

  • Here is my advice as a cisgender woman who grew up as a tomboy and likes to blur the gender lines.

    Cramps

What methods help well against period symptoms? And out of curiosity, how much does the experience vary between us?

I didn’t start getting regular cycles or bad period symptoms until after I was sterilized in my 30s. When I am feeling extra cruddy, I take Tylenol (edit: or preferred pain reliever) and simethicone (GasX), even if I’m not gassy. Simethicone really only affects gas so taking it even when you don’t have any is not harmful. It’s also part of my regimen when the bunnies have tummy aches and their vet said there is no harm in a little too much.

    Skincare

What would then help best, in getting the skin to feel more soft and look smoother?

Sorry, this is one I can’t really help with, my skin is so sensitive that I can’t use lotions often because I can feel even the lightest ones on my skin for hours and I feel greasy.

    Clothing

So, what would be some 'safe' choices for clothing that could fit either gender for summer, but also maybe make me feel girly enough?

I grew up more of a tomboy and used to not wear dresses or skirts at all, that only changed in my early 30s. As I said above, I like to blur the gender line and I’ve learned what looks more feminine on my body type.

I realized after typing it all out, that some of these may not be for either gender or what you were looking for, but as you become more comfortable, they may be useful to you or others in the future:

    • Long tunic shirts. These types of shirts can also have a bit of a flare at the bottom, so it gives an almost dress. These may not fit either gender, but once you are comfortable, they give a more feminine look.
    • Long dangly earrings. I have a mohawk (really short hair makes me personally feel more feminine) and I love wearing long dangly earrings. They can dress up a more casual outfit and look very classy. I started buying earrings as souvenirs when I travel and they can be a great conversation starter too.
    • Scarves. These can be used with any gender. I know you were looking for more summer items, but cute lightweight scarves create a more feminine look. I have a couple that are very lightweight/sheer that I pair with a cute top and jeans or a denim jacket and dress. The colors can also be matched with earrings or other small splashes of color in your outfit to make those colors stand out more. These are usually very inexpensive and can be also found at thrift stores.
    • Shoes. Don’t neglect your feet. Cute shoes are great, but there are so many shoes that are uncomfortable or just bad for your feet. Find a style and size that fit well first, because bad shoes can cause a lot of pain up through your body and that builds up as you get older. I am tall, so I don’t wear a lot of heels, but when I do, I prefer a chunky style because they are more stable for my ankles. Heels pump up your legs/calves and give them a more feminine look, but don’t wear them unless they are comfortable. I cannot emphasize enough, do not wear shoes that hurt your feet, they are not worth it no matter how cute they look.
    • Other accessories like jewelry and purses. Finding pieces that match makes a person look more put together. Cute rings, necklaces, or bracelets can be matched to earrings or splashes of color in your outfit, just like scarves. Don’t skip out on accessories.
    • Nail polish. I used to just buy the cheap stuff and it would start peeling after a day or two. I do kind of like the chippy look but that’s just the old punk rock in me. In the last few years, I decided to splurge a bit and buy the next level up, think the $6 polish vs the $2 stuff. I’ll never go back to the cheap stuff again. Since the switch, my polish now lasts about 2 weeks, which actually saves me money because I’m not fixing chips all the time or reapplying more often.
  • Bad Bunny isn’t the kind of music I listen to at all, but I really enjoyed his halftime show. I thought it was cool how they made it feel like a live filming of a music video as they moved through the trees. I liked seeing all the little bits and details that symbolize Puerto Rico in the background. Catching Pedro Pascal in there was pretty awesome too!

    It was an amazing performance.

  • I didn’t see it, but the most heartbreaking thing that happened to me on the internet was finding out my friend across the country killed himself.

We met on the big mountain in the middle of Un Goro Crater in wow. I was a rogue trying to kill an elite and kept dying. He was a warrior who saw me and asked to group. We became friends outside of wow and chatted on Trillian daily for the next year. Then I noticed he hadn’t been online in a while. After a month, I saw his name pop on and I reached out asking if he was ok. It wasn’t him, it was his sister asking if I knew anything. She told me they found him floating in a river. I never heard anything more than that. It broke my heart.

20 years later and I still miss you buddy. RIP Mysticpimp

  • It’s NJ, it’s intentional. There are sidewalks in small towns, but almost no sidewalks outside of them. On most roads like 38 and 541, you literally have to walk on the grass next to the road. Public transportation is surprisingly decent for a US state, specifically going from South Jersey into Philly is really easy.

Source: I grew up there and walked everywhere. It was terrible.

  • I highly doubt the number of people who cannot carry a book outweighs the people who choose not to carry a book.

I understand the OP is feeling bad about it, which they shouldn’t. In my own comment to the OP, I suggested taking time to read for an hour instead of scrolling, I’ve done this for years instead of watching tv. It’s something I suggest to anyone who feels bad about too much phone time or not reading enough.

Most folks have time to read, we just have to choose to spend time reading over other activities.

  • That’s not true, but don’t think folks should be downvoting you.

I literally bring a physical book with me everywhere I go. I brought my 600+ page book to the hair salon last night so I could read while I waited. I usually have a small book of short stories in my purse so I can read whenever I want. Part of what I love about books is they come in all sizes so they can be taken everywhere.

  • I’m an elder millennial and I tend to stay on my phone a bit much too. Since I wake up 2-3 hours before I have to do anything, I switch out at least an hour of scrolling in the morning for reading a book. I require my purses to be big enough to fit a book so I can bring one with me everywhere I go. I even brought my giant ass book to my haircut so I could read it while I waited.

Don’t feel bad, it’s something that too many of us do. Maybe try switching for a book or graphic novel or something.

  • I’ve been intentionally avoiding spoilers and previews, so I had no idea it was coming. It was a really happy surprise for me and that episode was so great.

I absolutely adore Sam’s smile, just beautiful!
