As cold as the other people in the house will let me. I have rarely lived anywhere with functioning central heat and air (and have never liked it when I did), so generally I use window units and a cunningly devised system of curtains. I don't care if a hallway or the bathroom gets hot, so long as the bedroom and kitchen stay cool, y'know?
In the winter I almost never use heating, except for a small space heater I just take room to room with me, and one that I run while in the shower.
It's the same thing in that both cutting sugar from your diet and living inside a 90°F/32°C box both take all possibility of joy out of your life
If you can afford them (they can be shockingly expensive here in the states!), actual wooden shutters are very attractive and work quite well at cooling a home.
But, if you'd like to keep your view and stay cool, awnings are another option. They keep the window in shade and prevent heat from entering the home nearly as well as just blocking the window, while allowing the window to, y'know, keep on windowing.
If you're somewhere without a ton of regulation or nosy neighbors, awnings can be made super easily with just some poles and tarps, or even a sheet of plywood depending on how much you care about appearance.
Same boat. I'm not vegan, and I'll probably never be. I could genuinely see myself going lacto ovo, but honestly, that wouldn't be so hard for me if I only cook for myself. But, like, it is clearly the correct moral decision, and anyone arguing that is either misinformed or lying to themselves
Yeah, that's the level when you keep telling people "I'm really thinking about going vegan. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna do it"
I've never played, what do I need to know?
My answer would be something along the lines of: I think astrology is vague enough to apply pretty generally, but the interesting thing about it is seeing people's reactions. It's a social placebo, and we can see how different people read into the same thing. "A new experience awaits you, Aries" and we see one person anticipating a raise a work, and thus behaving more confidently and getting it, while another is expecting divorce papers, and their behavior is helping them to reach that goal, too.
Yes, but I haven't watched a ton.
Those two are my favorites of what I've seen (outside of Ghibli, which I feel like is a category unto itself).
I haven't seen the last season of Attack on Titan, so don't spoil it, but I feel like Eren is complicated enough that I'm not going to form a full opinion until I see how it plays out. Light, however, I think is an irredeemable sociopath that justified his murderlust by going after socially convenient targets until he decided it didn't matter anymore, and began to think of himself as a god.
Fucking excellent storytelling, but I didn't care for the L replacement kid
Glit walked slowly across the plain, eyeing the group of hunters that surrounded the creature. It was large, much too large for the tribe to eat before the meat spoiled.
As he approached he could hear the argument already.
"No, rapal, you take that part! It was your spear that slowed her enough for us to catch her!"
"But it was your arrow that finally brought her down, Jatam, you should have that part for your family! You have 5 younglings!"
They would carry on like this for hours if left to their own devices, none wanting to be seen as greedy.
Glit approached and broke into the conversation,
"Hunters, good hunting," he said loudly, "Karana has smiled upon you today! The beast has laid down it's life for the survival of our people!"
The hunters beamed, proud not only of their work, but now in the secure knowledge of it's righteousness. The hunt has been approved, sanctified by the Storyteller, the one who speaks for the gods. They know they will be rewarded.
The hunters began disemboweling the enormous creature and cutting the choicest sections of meat off of her as Glit began to tell the story of Olana, the great Mother Elephant. He has told this story many times, but the hunters never tire of hearing it. When the work is done, and the story is told, Glit will reward the hunters and walk back to the tribe with them.
Well that's going on the list
Beat me to it. Mine was "storytelling and sexually gratifying the hunters in exchange for food"
That's fair. My problem is I'll probably never be able to afford it. I'm broke, and not techy like most of Lemmy. My life path is starving artist (writer) and gas station worker
Memorial tattoo help
Hey, folks, My mom just passed away, and I want a memorial tattoo for her. It will be my first, and I'm nervous.
We would play the NYT letterboxed every night, and so I designed a custom board that's solvable with an inside joke as well as her name. If anyone isn't familiar, the game is linked. I want it to basically look just like that board, but in black and white. The letters themselves I have picked out and know their placement.
The thing I'm concerned about is the letters blurring over time. I don't have a lot of money, so a friend's sister is going to be doing it for me for free. She has experience, 3 or so dozen real life tattoos, but she is new, and she's never done color before. I've seen her work, and it's good. But I'm worried about longterm, with this being letters and fine lines. Does it look like a viable idea? Do these sorts of things generally hold up fairly well?
Can I harvest teeth from this fish to replace the one I'm missing?
Jesus, could that actually kill someone?
There are no winners in a game of Ball Ball
My library made us take the balls out and give them to the librarian when we were done with the computer.
We used to huck em at each other's nuts
Gonna ruin me, but seconding. Brick in the window video?
Raylin is the one that needs the reassurance, Vanessa (right) knows exactly how beautiful she is. Raylin ain't never had a man bring her fish every day for three years. Everybody stops to take pics with Vanessa.
Best if read as Connery
Isn't that the entire thought process behind Guantanamo? The constitution applies in the us, move them outside our borders and we can do whatever we want. By the same logic, the constitution applies to citizens (when on us soil), not a citizen, no constitutional protections.
To be clear, I'm entirely against this, and I don't think that's actually how our laws work, just furthering your point of understanding how the stupid fucks get there. The US has been skirting it's own laws and letter-of-the-lawing it to get around whatever it doesn't like + outright ignoring and violating our own laws when it suits us for so long that who the fuck knows what they'll do, and how they'll justify it, and who can blame a MAGAt for not knowing how it actually works
An idiots guide?
Hey, folks!
So, the card linked to my hetzner account expired, and while I updated it everywhere else, the hetzner info fell through the cracks. They deleted my storageshare server, and erased everything, because I'm a fool, and didn't have their emails going to an account I ever check. I've spent the last several days feeling like I'd had a digital housefire. Things kept popping into my head, photos I had taken 10 years ago, or early drafts of the novel I'm writing... It's been pretty fucking depressing.
But, tonight, I fired up a laptop I haven't used in a while to find that most of what was in nextcloud was backed up on it. It's not everything, but it's the bulk of it.
I'd like for this to never happen again. I'm wondering if there's a complete idiot's guide to self hosting nextcloud? When I say I know nothing about this, please believe me. We're talking starting from scratch. I've never self hosted anything, and I have no idea where to begin. I'm on fedora silverblue, but j
Autocorrect really screwed up my chances of a repeat on Grindr
Hope this is allowed here. I couldn't find an lolgrindr type community.

We need a new milestone: the Pepto Bismol standard
Different religions have an "age of accountability."
The legal system has an "age of adulthood."
And puberty hits us with the "age of awkwardness" (thanks, hormones).
But I propose a new milestone: the Age of Pepto Bismol.
You’re not truly an adult until you have to keep Pepto Bismol nearby at all times, lest the twin demons of heartburn and indigestion take up permanent residence within you.
Is there a "Lemmy sings" type community?
One of my favorite things on the other site was seeing the users doing a song together, but I'd completely forgotten about it until someone just replied to my Jefferson Airplane quote with the next line. Would be very cool to see a Lemmy sings community. Anyone know of one? I'm coming up snake eyes on my search.
If tomorrow it was announced that aliens were real, highly intelligent, and in communication with our governments, no one would be talking about it by Halloween
Seriously, I doubt it would even take that long. We get used to shit so quickly, and the news cycles have to keep feeding us new things, the only way we'd keep talking about the aliens if they kept doing new and interesting things. I'd be willing to bet a year later there would be some people who straight up forgot about it. "Oh yeah, aliens! Are they gonna, like, visit at some point or just keep exchanging calls with the Whitehouse?"
Why do all my replies show up twice?
Not sure if this goes here, but whenever I get a reply to a comment, it shows up twice? Any body know why?
Screen shot of the phenomenon:
Multiple users, restricted access
Hey, folks, I'm new to this side of things, and I'm hoping someone can help me out.
I just signed up 5tb of storage through Hetzner's storage share, using nextcloud. I like it so far, but I'm running into an issue. I figured out how to make multiple users, but I don't know how to (or if I can) restrict different users to specific folders. We're broke, so this is going to be shared between me, my mom, my brother, and my sister in law. If it's possible, I'd like to create a folder for each of us, and restrict access to that folder to just that person. I don't want to be able to see what's in my brother's folder, and I don't want my mom seeing what's in mine, et cetera. I've tried to google it and look it up on youtube, but most of what I can find isn't related, and if it is, it's a bunch of technospeak that I don't really understand about self-hosting, which I'm not doing. If it's possible, it would be cool to have a central shared folder as well, but we could just share links with each
Suspend on lid close
Hey, folks, I'm hoping someone here can help me out.
I have a laptop that has been messed up for a while, and I just got it repaired. I was using as basically a desktop, external monitor, mouse, keyboard. I just got it repaired and would like to use it as a laptop again. My problem is that something like 2 years ago, I edited some setting so that I could close the lid of the laptop and it wouldn't suspend, but I can't remember how I did it, and now it won't suspend when I close it, which is less than convenient for use as a laptop.
I googled, but it's not in GNOME tweaks anymore, and I'm not sure how to do any of the stuff I see people posting about terminal commands. I can follow instructions for command line stuff, but I sort of need it spelled out for me from step 1.
Any help is really appreciated. Thanks in advance!

can't use eternity on new phone
Hey, folks, I just got a new phone, and reinstalled Eternity on it. But no matter which account I try to log in with, I'm getting an error ("cannot fetch user info") when I try to log in.
Any help is much appreciated. I'm not sure if eternity is on the play store, but I got it through f droid if that matters.
