  • I posted this one a while back:

Despite that, I think there were some interesting things about that season, and despite the oddness that was that plot, Saru and iPad baby was somehow still enjoyable.

I just feel like they squandered their interesting new setting with season 4 (granted, I haven't finished season 4); there were so many plots that could have sprung organically from the fall of the Emerald Chain and the rebuilding of the Federation, but no, we have to make up this stupid DMA as a big bad again, and we have to do another plot about dealing with grief.

Heck, we could have kept the DMA and still blown up Booker's homeworld, but let his family live and instead have written a story about living in diasporas, rather than beating the dead horse that is DISCO's take on individual grief.

  • IYKYK

  • I think is is more a c/Risa thing.

  • Also used it before, for Rounds I believe.

  • Now the big question is how do you say, “Rampant cultural appropriation/misrepresentation is Star Trek: Voyager”? 🤣

  • I mean, I’ve put several They Might Be Giants memes on here by now, so it’s probably fair someone else puts something out.

  • I am sorry I didn’t get this until you explained it. Only moderately familiar with Ramones discography.

  • You're right that it was power-related - one of the options was an ASPM modification - but the issue seemed to be common to this chipset accross laptop brands.

The fix I used came from this post: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=286109

My machine was a Thinkpad, but this article was also talking about problems on HP, Asus, etcetera. I think the 8852BE might just be cursed

To be fair, I was using an E series Thinkpad, but in my defense, the E series seems to have improved a lot in the past few years - this was luckily the only issue I've had. I've had much more difficult times with Linux on other laptops. Heck, even my desktop had more setup than this when I was first starting out, though it was because I was using a Broadcom Wi-Fi card, as I also dual-booted with a Hackintosh and macOS only supports Broadcom Wi-Fi chipsets.

  • Otherwise agree, but I did run into pain with Realtek on my Thinkpad - the module would sometimes crash and disconnect entirely (on a PCI-e level) from the system.

I did manage to find a fix, but I would not recommend Realtek to someone.

  • I once experimented with something similar, except it was supported to trigger my smart speaker and drop into another part of the house to tell me.

Honestly, I really need to replace my proprietary smart speaker system with something self-hosted; it’s just I only recently have had the time to start cinsidering.

  • Vulnerabilities certainly do exist, but I’m pretty sure the attacker has to be well-equipped

I’d call it a protection against data getting cracked in a petty theft, but if your attack vector is much more than that, there are other measures you should probably take. I think Clevis also works with Yubikeys and similar, meaning the system won’t decrypt without it plugged in.

Heck, I think I know someone who just keeps their boot partition with the keys on it on a flash drive and hide it on their person.

  • In my case, no; it’s all a single machine - it is in the initramfs and uses the system’s TPM to (relatively) securely store the keys.

It can be set up with an attestation server, but you certainly don’t have to do it. The Arch wiki has a really good article on getting it set up.

  • I use Clevis to auto-unlock my encrypted root partition with my TPM; this means when my boot partition is updated (E.G a kernel update), I have to update the PCR register values in my TPM. I do it with my little script /usr/bin/update_pcr:

     undefined

    #!/bin/bash
    clevis luks regen -d /dev/nvme1n1p3 -s 1 tpm2

I run it with sudo and this handles it for me. The only issue is I can't regenerate the binding immediately after the update; I have to reboot, manually enter my password to decrypt the drive, and then do it.

Now, if I were really fancy and could get it to correctly update the TPM binding immediately after the update, I would have something like an apt package shim with a hook that does it seamlessly. Honestly, I'm surprised that distributions haven't developed robust support for this; the technology is clearly available (I'm using it), but no one seems to have made a user-friendly way for the common user to have TPM encryption in the installer.

  • Haven't purchased it yet. I need to read it, but I've had a difficult time tracking down issue 30 in comic book stores - I got behind and have everything else in the other spin off series.

  • No! Why did you make me aware of this one?! Now I have to acquire it!

Honestly, this might be the best one they’ve ever made; before, I was quite partial to the Janeway one, which I gifted to my mother.

  • Sad 😔

  • Depends. SNW retconned it and said the Temporal Cold War pushed it up.

  • I’m pretty sure by default, virtual networks are not enabled automatically if you’re not using virt-manager GUI.

To make it run automatically, run the following: virsh net-autostart default

If it’s not that, just to make it easier to find information, what’s your host distro? I’m guessing by mention of Kickstart files that it’s something Red Hat related, possibly Rocky 9 based on your choice of guest.

  • The bridge crew of the Dauntless/Voyager A would like a word.

    (Just pretend Ascensia’s not there)

  • Weird. It must be that my taste is very indie/alternative. You can always also check if the artist has their own shop.

That’s how Jonathan Coulton does it. They Might Be Giants does it as well (in addition to a Bandcamp), but most of their stuff from 1990-1996 is stuck on their former label, so they can’t sell DRM-free audio, only vinyl and/or cassette.

  • I got midway through season 4 of Disco, though I plan on finishing eventually. I think season 3 had its ups and downs, but the setting it introduced could have been really interesting. I was just underwhelmed by what they were doing in season 4 instead of the natural plot threads the 32nd century opened.

I agree on SNW, and LD and PRO have earned a special place in my heart.

  • Let’s transporter clone, Genesis planet, Black Mountain etcetera George Samuel so he can live past 2267.

    Too Many Reposts

Hi. Normally , I enjoy the original (or at least lesser-known) memes on here.

Lately however, I’ve noticed that despite the anti-repost rule on here, way too many posts recently have been reposts; many of them very well might literally appear in the first results of an image search for “[insert series] memes”.

Personally, I feel that the purpose of any Trek meme community should primarily be to explore strange new memes; while occasionally reposts commemorating seasonal events (as well as the occasional tastefully-timed time loop meme) are acceptable, I think they should never dominate this community. I am hoping we can reduce that frequency and return to our primary mission.

Thank you for your time in listening to my concerns. Glory to you and your house.

How do you guys protect your FLP case singles?

I recently got a rather pristine copy of They Might Be Giants' 1996 single S-E-X-X-Y, mostly for a few bonus tracks unavailable on streaming. Like, it was in shrink wrap with hype sticker, albeit shrink wrap on its last legs - good enough that the rest of it was still in near mint condition, but too damaged for it to be worth keeping on, so I took a 2400 DPI scan of the hype sticker and removed it. Don't worry - I kept the hype sticker.

I want to keep it very fresh - I ripped the CD to my PC and plan on never taking it out of the case again. For now, I have put a zip lock around the case to prevent it gathering dust or getting fingerprints from handling.

However, since it's an FLP case, I am more worried about the case being crushed than a typical jewel case. While I don't plan on getting too ruff with it, I want something a bit harder.

Thus, I was wondering if any of you guys have any particular strategy for this case?

I've looked into CD display cases, but am otherwise having

To his credit, Tom Kenny has done good stuff for Trek before

    cross-posted from: https://startrek.website/post/22464055

I'm usually not one to beat a dead Reman horse being, but I had to point this one out.

As it turns out, besides also playing background characters in every episode Quimp appeared in, Tom Kenny also played Mariner's ex Malvus in "An Embarrassment of Dooplers", D'Onni in "We'll Always Have Tom Paris", the Ferengi antagonists of "Mugato Gumato", and several background characters in each of those episodes.

How was T'Ana able to recognize the era of Earth by smell (or did she)?

In LD S3 E8 "Crisis Point: Paradoxus", the holographic version of Dr. T'Ana was able to recognize they were in late 20th century Earth, seemingly by a single sniff.

I am assuming this is a reflection of T'Ana's actually ability rather than mere cinematic indulgence, for two reasons:

    • We do see T'Ana has enhanced olfactory senses in S2 E10 "First First Contact", as it implies she is able to track Tendi by scent, as well as in S4 E5 "Empathalogical Fallacies" when she hunts the Betazoids.
    • Considering that Crisis Point was built off private logs, while the plot points may be ridiculous, crew abilities and limitations tend to be mostly accurate. We see this in the original Crisis Point, for instance, when Rutherford has to do the magic transport instead of Billups - simulated Cerritos crew members won't do what the real them would thing is impossible.

Anyhow, it makes me wonder if Starfleet Academy has some sort of sensory training courses for species with certain stronger senses. For

Why did they revive Nova squadron in the 2380s?

In Prodigy, Nova Squadron has been revived by the mid-2380s.

This feels like a very terrible idea for a multitude of reasons. Besides the initial incident, I would think Starfleet would hesitate against elite cadet groups even further after both the attempted Red Squad coup and the USS Valiant incident.

Also, I have two takeaways from the LD Nova Fleet incident. One, Locarno feeling the need to “revive” Nova Squadron suggests that it didn’t still exist in 2381, meaning the revival must have been relatively close to 2384. Second, I feel like the coming back of a former “elite” cadet to bite them would further make Starfleet wary of establishing an elite cadet group again.

Overall, it just seems every time the Academy does this, they just produce a group of arrogant cadets very susceptible to manipulation and/or recklessness. Even 2384 squadron seems this way - we see their elitist attitude towards the former Protostar crew matching that of Red Squad and such.

So why did they do it a

Interesting Observation of Ferengi Gender Roles in Nagus Rom Era

Edit: When I say "Center Right" I also mean relative to Ferengi society.

A small addition to my post, Gender and Sexual Orientation in FERENGI society from a few months back.

I caught this frame in the background of LD S4 E6 Parth's Ferengi Heart Place, depicting an unclothed Ferengi woman.

This provides an interesting insight into the Ferengi social/political landscape of the Nagus Rom era. It suggests a center right that is fine with women traveling in public to some extent (maybe with limits, like it can only be with husband or father or out of necessity), but not them being clothed. This doesn't seem to be that common, as most Ferengi women we see in this episode (including on the television in Boimler's apartment) are clothed, but it seems to be a position that exists.

Honestly, I'd be interested in a novel (perhaps written from the perspective of an autobiography) or something about how Nagus Rom and Leeta survived leading Ferengin

FYI: Audio Crackling Bug with Pipewire 1.4.1 + FluidSynth in Debian Testing/Unstable and Work-Around

In case anyone is using Debian Testing/Unstable and experiencing audio issues, I thought I'd share this.

Until the bugs get fixed, there are two workarounds:

    1. Uninstall FluidSynth
    2. Add systemctl --user restart pipewire to your session startup; this eliminates the problem.

As I want FluidSynth, I went with the latter.

Will SNW (or any future Trek) Retcon Mojave, California?

In the pilot, they depict Mojave, California as being very terraformed from a desert to a lush parkland.

However, I find this a bit antiquated... this seems to be very much rooted in an atomic age scientific idealism that thought of how we could make the world work for us and bring it to more western standards of natural beauty.

I think this is in conflict with the TNG solar punk aesthetic and the general respect for nature implied by the Prime Directive - notice how there's no desert bushes in sight as if they wiped them out. This seems to be insane damage to the ecosystem.

I wonder if they'll ever revisit Mojavo on-screen, and whether they'll retcon this so that Mojave is a gorgeous desert town where they solved the problems of drought and extreme heat plaguing the southwestern US while working in tandem with and even boosting the local wildlife, rather than just razing everything and plastering grass and non-native trees over it.

I'd bet we probably only have 3 seasons for it to

My Attempt at Jellico circa 2381

I was especially trying to imitate Prodigy's styling of him.

I don't know that it looks like Jellico, but it does look like an experienced officer circa 2381.

The stardates are just there to fill in the document - I got them from event years on Memory Beta and then just put a random date into the stardate calculator.

Has Anyone Else Noticed Jellico's Face Constantly Changes in Prodigy?

I was looking at references of both TNG and Prodigy Jellico to try to make an LD-style Jellico, when I found how they styled his face varied a lot between episodes - I count about 4 significant variants.

For reference, here is TNG Jellico:

This was his first Prodigy appearance in S1 E15 Masquerade:

Definitely a bit yikes, but I also slightly dig the "old man who will bite your hand off if you get within one mile of him" look.

They totally changed his face for his second appearance 4 episodes later, in S1 E19 Supernova Pt 1:
