Welcome former r/suddenlyspongebob subscribers to our new home on lemmy!

2 Years ago, as part of the Reddit protest I took the tiny fledgling ~700 subscriber sub private. I now feel it's time to move it over to Lemmy!

I'll be copying content here and then once that's done r/suddenlyspongebob will be PURGED as best I can

So things might be a little bare for a day or 2.

For rules, just keep things nice and chill around here

Welcome!

President Trump said he pushed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this week on the aid blockage to the Gaza Strip, telling him “We’ve got to be good to Gaza.”

“Those people are suffering,” Trump told reporters Friday on Air Force One as he revealed what he said to Netanyahu during a phone on Tuesday.

Trump, in his first public comments about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region, said there’s a “very big need” for food and medicine in the region. “We’re going to take care of that,” he added.

Panik

  • Usually anything where the BIOS can find and boot Grub itself but Grub can't finish the boot chain for whatever reason, like /boot being on a separate partition and your main partition gets corrupted or something

  • You can say fuck on the internet.

Yes, but you're not being judged just because you used it but how

You absolutely should call Tankie scum at every opportunity.

No, you shouldn't, "Tankie" by itself targets their ideology and their actions (Pushing misinfo, propaganda etc) by adding "scum" into it or other slurs you shift that target from ideologies and behavior to the actual person. Not cool. For the most part, they're just people being used as tools by the real evil people pulling the strings.

Tankies don't use logic, trying to reason with those intolerants is just turtles all the way down.

That's fine, remember, your arguments are public so aren't just about convincing a tankie, but any potential observers as well

Anybody who wants to foster healthy community on Lemmy should promote open hostility towards Tankies

No. Absolutely not. They can have their community, we should be promoting defederation, boycotting and general awareness.

You know I'm pretty anti-tankie around here, and even I'm saying, chill out open hostility does nothing but anger everyone.

  • YDI. The other comments probably just got swept up in it, it happens, but that first that triggered mod action is def over the line

There's no need to get angry like that, or at least type it out, fight the tankies with logic, reasoning and evidence not a bunch of expletives and slurs

  • Every once in a while I think about lighting up at my job so I could be like John from Jurassic Park now that I'm in IT

Unfortunately a) id probably get fired and b) I HATE the smell of cigarettes LMAO

  • You'd think, but from what I understand the Invidious/YT cat and mouse game is rather intense so the larger public instances often don't work and it's better to use smaller private or personal instances instead

So most who care have opted to just set something up to handle YT links on the fly

  • Videos without audio? Imgur can handle mp4s and imgur links autoplay in the Lemmy apps ive used (Boost and Voyager)

Videos with audio, well really YT is the best place, pretty much anybody who cares about YT tracking/ads/views will have processes/plugins in place to handle YT links. Like there are plugins that will automatically modify a YT link to a designated invidious instance or whatever

If you really really don't want to upload to YT, a Peertube instance is your best bet, unfortunately just don't expect it to be particularly...fast. Every Peertube video I've tried to watch buffered every 10-30 seconds, but I don't blame them, video is very intense, expensive and difficult to handle compared to every other media type

  • think the biggest instance, lemmy.world, not being operated by the Lemmy devs is also a good health indicator

Doubly so considering how the main devs manage their instance according to their highly controversial political views LMAO

  • You would warn newcomers about the Tankie Triad too if you had repeatedly seen all the stories of "I tried Lemmy, but it just seemed like a bunch of tankies, turns out it was just because I was on .ml when I tried it again"

There's tons more that never came back and go on life thinking Lemmy is Voat 2.0. I know this because there's plenty of comments on Reddit whenever Lemmy comes up about "it's just Tankies over there"

Yes, how dare I try to protect Lemmy's rep, I don't want to see this place become Voat 2.0

  • Sounds like it's coming along

Heh I'm finding out so much about how inadequate the blocking system on Lemmy is the past couple days. I'm not a conspiracy theorist type of person, but it's so bad it almost feels... intentional lol

  • Welcome happy you're here! We've got memes on deck at [email protected] and if you're a programmer of some kinds we got [email protected] to scratch that itch and be sure to drop a shit(post) off at [email protected] or if you want SCIENCE and memes head over to the wonderful [email protected] or if you just want regular SCIENCE mander.xyz is full of sciency comms like [email protected] and [email protected]. [email protected] is also nice this time of year, but you'll have to post before you can leave.

We're not without our cons though, biggest problem we have are probably the Tankies (Authoritarian "communists" who will overlook any wrong doings of China, Russia, NK because they think their governments are the "gold standard"), but here they're mostly on the Tankie Triad lemmy.ml, lemmygrad and hexbear. You have a Reddit.org account so iirc you only need to worry about .ml, but on Lemmy you can do a personal instance wide block if you'd rather just not deal with them. If you want to see what they get up to from a safe distance check [email protected]

  • The W3C (The body that dictates web standards) specification, that describes what browser engines should handle, like CSS features, HTML5 etc and how is equivalent to thousands of pages long and there are huge standards to implement.

HTML5 is a big thing to implement, so is CSS and the JavaScript engine and probably even more technologies I'm forgetting

And that's just implementation, it takes even more work to get them running well enough for the average end-user

Ladybird has been working on their from scratch engine for ~5 years iirc and they're not planning to even have the first alpha out until next year lol
