An Arkansas state representative filed a resolution Wednesday to rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America.”

The alternative was a rocket scientist... But he was a democrat so we can't have that can we?

This is one of those things I'm unreasonably passionate about - probably because I work with computers and dates a lot. So passionate about that I'd post ISO8601 on a weed community... sorry.
At least you didn't have to worry about Ruin manipulating it.
... Sorry, I've been reading the Mistborn series and just finished "The Hero of Ages"
This is exactly the comment I opened this thread to find. Thank you.
Not at all. It's more of "I'm used to windows, change is scary"
There are still some things that are win/mac only and if you're heavily invested in them it can be hard to migrate to Linux based FOSS alternatives (or, VM/WINE/etc). But, most "normal" (non-geek) people aren't keen on throwing away all of their experience on one specific application to learn a new, different, one... Regardless of feature parity.
I haven't looked in several years, but noob friendly CAD is one example. I ended up using browser based ones since I couldn't find an easy offline one. "Easy" is the key here - there are pretty great FOSS CAD suites, they just aren't super friendly to stupid people (me).
Though, that may have changed, if you've got recommendations please let me know.
I appreciates that about you.
I don't know if I've actually seen one of your posts, but thank you nonetheless.
The cycle continues
Similar : my spouse was complaining about how slow her laptop was and that she'd probably have to buy a new one. I popped a bootable Mint USB in and she was impressed that it was "like new".
I left her on the bootable for a week as a trial then installed it to the HD. 99% of what she does is browser based anyway.
Don't mind me, I'm just going to keep up voting these posts because they're so well done.
I'm both amused and mildly offended by the latter part of this comment.
... Well done, 10/10, no notes.
I'm old but the shortest my hair has been in the past 35 or 40 years is shoulder length. Every other spring I have the spouse chop it off to shoulder length then let it go again for two years.
I'm also in Arkansas.
But, not a kid so I guess it's okay for me to be my filthy hippie / sasquatch self according to this proposal.
AvE blade in the wild? Nice.
... Nice sheath too :)
Yeah... I should expand. The penguins are just my favorite part of those movies and it matches the Linux motif that I started with yet falls apart, you know, when I name a windows laptop rico-w
: P
1901-01-01? Me too!
Good to meet you birthday buddy
Mine are named after the penguins from the Madagascar movie : Skipper, Private, Kowalski, and Rico.
Unfortunately there's only four so I often supplement with a suffix. For example, I've got an old windows laptop kicking around that is "rico-w"
... I should really commit to a naming scheme with a wider array of options.
I have no experience with HRT (just an old cis dude that likes my long hair) but I've been using topical minoxidil for a couple of years and it has arrested and to some degree reversed my pattern baldness.
It's not an amazing difference, but it is a difference.
If anyone tries it - look for the off brand/generic, it's way cheaper.
EDIT: it does have a warning for male use only so in the mtf area it might be a bad Idea. Do the research, ask your doc, and I hope you get a badass head of hair.
Second this. Think I heard about it on lemmy, been using it ever since. Built in editing, copy to clipboard, save to file, all the stuff I need.
I don't have kids, so yeah.
Edit: now that I scroll through the comments, I see this is a common theme.
The last one is now a governor.
... So apparently it pays to vomit lies that align with whatever he says. Seems the people love it.
Differs by company, of course, but the one I used to work for would wipe, reimage, and sell them to employees for $50.
Use for empty small propane tanks?
I've got several of these empty steel propane tanks from heating the chicken coop during the recent cold weather before I got an adapter to run the heater off of a larger refillable tank. Any ideas on what they could be repurposed for?
Seems like there should be some use for them besides tossing them in the recycling. I'd assume I'd need to poke a hole in them before recycling since they are/were pressure vessels.
I know there are adapters out there to refill them but now that I can use a larger, more easily refillable, tank I don't really have any inclination to do so.
My only thought so far was to cut the top off, drill some holes, and make a little stick burning camp stove. But, that's not something I'll ever use.
I've got a fairly extensive workshop and metal working tools so pretty much everything is on the table. I can even do really shitty welding if required.
One of my chickens laid a tiny egg
We showing odd eggs now? Here's mine.
EDIT: Fixing post so the image is in the post instead of in the body. I'm dumb, sorry.

An Arkansas state representative filed a resolution Wednesday to rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America.”
If approved, State Rep. Aaron Pilkington’s resolution would also require all state agencies to use the term “Gulf of America.”
The Republican, who represents parts of Johnson and Pope counties in northwest Arkansas, said renaming the gulf would “reinforce the role it plays in supporting the prosperity and security of the United States.”
Arkansas LEARNS school vouchers: More than 80% of new enrollees did not attend public school last year
The makeup of voucher students in 2024-25 is similar in many ways to last year, with fewer than 1 in 5 recipients transferring from public school.
cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/21555013
Nearly 5,000 students who received vouchers in Year One continued into Year Two of the program. They were joined by more than 9,000 new enrollees who joined the program this year, for a total enrollment of 14,297. As with Year One, the overwhelming majority of the new enrollees — 83% — did not attend public school in the prior year.
Either way, the program has to date mostly provided vouchers to students who are not moving over from public schools. These results fit a consistent pattern in other similar statewide voucher programs nationwide. Most of the public cash doled out winds up boosting the bank accounts of families who were never in the public school system to begin with.
Police name suspect in 1995 Morgan Nick disappearance
Police in the west Arkansas city of Alma say a now-deceased Crawford County man is the lone suspect in the 1995 abduction of six-year-old Morgan Nick.
cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/20459024
Morgan Nick was six years old when she was abducted from a baseball field in Alma in June 1995. In a news conference Tuesday, Alma Police Chief Jeff Horner said a former person of interest in the case, Billy Jack Lincks, is now the main suspect in Nick’s abduction.
“The most important thing here is Morgan is still missing, but we’ve reached a point where we can concentrate on one suspect to determine the circumstances surrounding Morgan’s abduction,” he said.
Lincks died in 2000 while serving a prison term for sexual indecency with a child. He attempted to abduct a child about 12 weeks after Nick’s disappearance, about eight miles away from where she was last seen.
Topics for a Linux intro course
Hello fellow Linux Lemmings!
I've been tasked with putting together a 20 hour class for "Introduction to Linux" and I'd like to solicit your opinions for topics that should be covered.
The class is targeted for at least minimally technical people - maybe developers, or future developers, but regardless of background they've never seen or worked with Linux before.
I plan to do a VERY short overview of installing Linux (to a VM - so they have a "real" environment to learn with) and the GUI but the primary focus will be CLI. Imagine tools and tasks you come across while working on a "real" server (or VM).
A high level overview of the topics I currently have allocated is :
/dev, /proc, /etc, /home, /bin
, etc) The Arkansas Department of Education says the course code was removed so they could search the class curriculum for “indoctrination.”
Just 48 hours before the first day of school, the Arkansas Department of Education announced that Advanced Placement African American Studies wouldn't count towards graduation. They said they’re reviewing the course for possible indoctrination.
Republican Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders went on Fox News to explain her administration's decision to de-prioritize AP African American studies.
“We cannot perpetuate a lie to our students, and push this propaganda leftist agenda, teaching our kids to hate America, and hate one another," she said.
Sanders has not pointed to anything specific in the AP African American Studies curriculum. The Arkansas Department of Education notified teachers that they’d deleted the course code for AP African American Studies. That means students can’t get graduation credit for taking it.
What are you doing tonight?
Me : Ummm....
Beak Injury Question
You ever have a hen who has a beak that seems to delaminate and soften? This is a first for me.
She's in good spirits, doesn't seem to be in pain, and forages a lot. But, she can't seem to grab much food in her beak - especially no grass.
She can get some layer crumbles and mealworms but not as much or as easily as in the past. I've been weighing her the past four days and she's hasn't lost a noticeable amount of weight. But, yesterday I also started supplementing her with moistened layer crumbles (offered separately from the others) and she devours it. It seems to only be the upper beak, the tip of which appears to have broken off yesterday afternoon.
Today I got a vitamin mix (couldn't hurt?) named "Nutri-Drench" and added that on top of the moistened crumbles.
Just curious since I've never seen this before.
Personal choices to reduce your contribution to climate change
One of these choices has a sliiiiightly higher impact than the others 🤔
