  • As far as I can find from Hansard, no reform MPs d took part in any of the debates of the bill in parliament where they had a chance to put their views across where it matters. Yes, they do not have any power because that do not have MPs but other parties managed to contribute. Only 3 of the 5 MPs voted against it - no prizes to guess who wasn't there!

Party of incompetent, racist, power-hungry, rich, conniving arseholes.

  • Surely this is already the case where petrol taxes are higher if you drive more. I don't think it's fair for me to not be taxed less in an urban environment considering I drive much less

  • Not sure I care anymore. The UK is for the wealthy only and we can only try to struggle through, whether it's through inflation, poorer services or more tax. Until we address the power dynamics, wealth inequality and tax havens (City of London, Jersey, Guernsey, etc), I could nor give a flying fuck what inflation is quarter to quarter. Prices and housing costs are already fucked

  • I'm really torn about this. We want police by consent and to have some discrepancy to do the right / moral thing but don't want to give them too much power to choose what laws they enforce. You don't want Nazi type "just following orders" but you don't want them targeting left-wing protestors more because they lean right-wing (the Met police at least who let's not forget, targetted/target women, queer people, black people, etc much more than the right wing)

The laws are made by Parliament and the current labour government should take the full blame for proscribing this group. The anti terrorism laws are so harsh that I can believe the police had no choice but to arrest them.

The absurdity of arresting the numbers they did, the type of people they did, and this £10m cost should have made the government change the law itself.

  • London under his mayorship has seemed to improve dramatically but to be honest, the mayor has quite limited powers compared to other International Mayors. He has pushed for things that would not have happened but the whole system is split across local Boroughs (32 of them with different demographics and priorities, plus the mess of the City of London), the London Assembly, the London Mayor executive branch, and the national Government.

Given these splits, you only really hear about candidates from the main parties who have resources to publicise them and you know you can guess their general politics just from their party so easier to choose them.

  • ABAB - All billionaires are bastards. Case in point (from Wikipedia): In September 2020, Ratcliffe officially changed his tax residence from Hampshire to Monaco, a move that it is estimated will save him £4 billion in tax.

  • I'm an accountant and tax professional but have always been into computers. I had a social media account breached although it was no issue as hadn't used it did years. I used a terrible password as thought it did not matter but made me realise I needed to be better generally so started using a password manager.

Then Netflix stopped account sharing. I had just got a 4k TV and only their top level with 4 screens supported it so was pissed off. The fragmentation across services had started so was getting annoyed anyway. This led me to the arr's.

I decided I could no longer trust Microsoft and hated their pricing structure so was interested in Nextcloud. By then I found the self hosted community (on reddit), bought a desktop PC and after getting the hang of it plus many mistakes I loved my services so will never look back.

Joined the migration to Lemmy. Am based in the UK and joined the anti-US feelings so am setting up more storage, better redundancy and more services for my family. A few family members are interested in helping so can share backups.

  • Has the usage of ebikes as a proportion of cycling gone up by that same amount, more or less? Without knowing that it's meaningless. I couldn't find anything in the article to conform that

  • Surely you would read the leaflet first to double check it is correct before posting. Everyone knows printers can make mistakes. You check first before actual use. No excuse, they just don't care about the law

  • There is no set meaning for it. It could refer to a wall of text, the top few lines on your CV or another name for a cover letter. Does it have a word limit to help figure out what it is?

If it's a beefy bit of text, aim for just under that amount of text. Go through the job description and cover all the points in there, and refer to previous experiences (could be within work, uni, school, volunteering, anything really, tbh could make it up or exaggerate an event) to demonstrate that skill of requirement. Try to use I did x rather than we or x happened. In the examples, you could have something that went wrong and what you did to fix it. (E.g needs to be a team player in job description becomes I work well with team members by listening to the input from others and also putting my point of view across where relevant and helpful. For example, in my final year at university we did a group project on x. Two of my team members got into an argument about which direction to go. I talked to both of them to calm down and as a group, I encouraged everyone to evaluate each idea by the positives as well as areas of improvement. That way, we were able to take the best option for the group and move forward to complete the project.) Or some bollocks like that...

Don't use AI to blindly write it. You can use it top give you examples of what to put in or to proof read but chances are 90% of people will just use AI which they'll be able to tell and they'll sound the same so not using it will stand out.

Don't spend too much time and effort unless you really really want the job. They'll be mostly skimmed through if read at all.

  • I'm all for this. The arts really suffered for years under austerity and cut backs. Right now it feels like enjoyment only for the rich (who can afford tickets, can afford not to work or nepostism). The UK has deep cultural heritage and needs to nurture and develop it in all parts or society.

  • Not a domestic terrorist because of ... reasons

  • It's not as elegant but you could always try to use a smart plug to turn the TV on or off instead (if it turns on automatically when the plug is switched on)

  • Hundred percent agree apart from the fact that it's only been there last 30 years. It has always been the case but now is on a quicker scale with technology and the complete surrender to international companies (mainly American where consumer rights do not exist). Government responses are there (and we have much more protection here than most of the world) but they are still slow to respond so more people are caught before they can respond.

We need some way to have preventative measures, a change in attitude from the "business community" and actual repercussions.

First though, we need to stop buying from / using Amazon, Meta, Google, etc.

These came for a reason and after people were fucked over:

  • I found it a real struggle with the TV to find a non smart one, especially as the smart ones are cheaper. Best bet is to get a TV stick and never connect the TV to the internet

I have a Nvidia Shield (bought used on eBay) and works fine with my LG Smart TV, which has never touched the internet. I have a Xiami Mii TV S on another TV, which is the closest to stock android TV I found. Do not get a firestick! Both have 4k, can control TV volume through the remote, have auto turn on/off, plus the TV just goes to that channel so don't have to touch the TV remotes ever. The Shield is faster and easier to setup but much more expensive.

You could also buy a mini PC but can be harder for certain apps and full video and sound quality (avoid if you want Netflix and other apps). I have stremio (with Real Debrid), jellyfin and TiviMate (IPTV) for all of our needs so could get away with a mini PC but considering the effort I decided not to.

Not sure about the sound bar as bought sonos years ago. It works flawlessly with the TV and runs through home assistant now (responds to Shield remote volume control or can play music through HA BUT I set it up with the original app so can't comment on that part). It has great audio quality but agree that I would look elsewhere if looking now (although would still consider it).

I also use pihole to try to block any trackers etc.

  • I saw one last week in suburban London. It is fucking massive. I'm used to bigger cars on our roads but this monster dwarfed my hatchback and the other days. It could barely fit in the lane and was left hand drive so must be imported. It's absolutely insane for somebody to buy that and ride!

  • Do you or anybody know if there is a good place to find tactics currently being battle tested and updated from Minnesota and other places? I feel like the HK protests also had lots of interesting findings. It might be useful for SUTR and other UK anti-facist groups

  • Sorry, I didn't actually realise it was not an open link as thought they had a few free queries. Just replace it with searching for "UK tower blocks" in your search of choice and hopefully you'll see my message.

On Kagi, I have to say though, I happily pay for it. If it's free, you are the product, so not sure how it could be worse privacy wise. That's not mental gymnastics to me, I never saw an advert for it and chose it after seeing it recommended a lot on Lemmy. Tried it out and was sold with the results.

I know there were some gripes around some potential, small funding of a Russian search engine (if I remember but happy to be corrected) but it felt like it was in the area of don't let perfect get in the way of good, and they are so much better than any of the free alternatives. I don't see ads, promoted results, AI crap and can customise my searches to suit me. They realease lots of upgrades that make the experience better for me instead of corporate advertisers. I used DuckDuckGo for years but started to see really bad results. Give me an alternative and I'll try it out!
