dad's friend, li call him Bob, is dring a ng out in the middle of bumfuck nowhere oregon

has to make the delivery by the following morning so he decides to just drive through the night

it's like ane in the morning, no one else is out on the roads

Phaant seen another car in probably a hundred miles

he is literally in the middle of nowhere

suddenly the whole entire sky lights up

    matantly like daylight

Bob fuckin slams on the breaks, has no idea what the hell is going on

everything stays lit up for a good solid ten seconds, he can see everything

whatever's happening, it's not lightning, it doesn't stop or flicker at all

Bob hunkers down, anticipating imminent nuclear devastation

    suddenly sky goes dark again

    no sound, no blast waw

he sits there in the middle of the road waiting for almost five minutes, then decides to keep going

figures it was a meteor or something

goes about two miles up the road and sees a car with its flashers on stopped in the middle of the road

stops a good distance away from t

there's not enough room to go around it

front end of the car is crumpled the it hit something

Bob figures they probably hit a deer that got spooked whenever the meteor went over and ran into the road

the gets out of the cab and goes to see if the driver is okay

diver is sitting on the ground by the diver side door

has his knees up and is testing his head on his ams

Hey buddy you okay? Bob calis

he stops about ten feet away for seemingly no reason

something about the whole siiation feels weed

Bob is one of those guys that always listens to his gut so he stays put

God my head is killing me." The guy says, but he doesnt lift his head up so it's muffled

Did you hit a deer? Bob asks

she's getting more and more uneasy

    somethings wrong

but he still can't figure out what exactly it is

the guy says he think he might have hurt his head, asks Bob to please help him

Blob takes a step forward but his natincts are going apeshit

    he looks at everything again

    that's when he notices it

the fucking car is all wrong

it looks like what someone thinks a car looks like

it has all the right pieces but there's nothing extra, if that makes sense

Blob says it looked like a cheap hot wheels knock-off, it just looked wonky and wrong

he looks around at the back of the car and realizes that not only is there no license plate, there's not even a trunk

it's just one solid piece of material with taillights put in it

there's no manufacturer or model names

Bob knows cars, and this thing is nothing he's ever seen before.

from where he's standing, he can see there's no tailpipe or even hubcaps

t's just the shape of a car

he starts to back up and the guy asks him for help again

Bob tells him he can't help him and that he'll call a tow truck when he gets to the next town

the guy ifta his head and looks at Bob

tells him he thinks he might have a concussion

something is really really wrong with the guys face but again it takes a second for Bob to figure it out

The next part is exactly how Bob described it

everything on the mans face was where it should have been, in their normal positions

    The looked totally normal

except for the fact that his eyes and mouth wers on upside down

Bob goes apeshit and sprints back to his nig

climbs in, locks the door just in time for the man to slam into the door behind him

how the fuck did he get there so fast

he knocks on the glass and smiles at Bob but because his mouth is upside down it looks like he's screaming

telis Bob to open the door so he can come in

    Bob fucking floors it

doesn't care if the hits the guy or not

Phis trick easily pushes the "car" out of the way

whatever it is, it's light and it makes no sound when he hits it

    Unfortunately it's an anticlimactic ending.

Bob got where he was going fine, with no other problems. My dad knows the story, but I don't think he believes it.

But Bob tells it to everyone he meets, so he obviously does

He's absolutely adamant about the guy being an alien

Years later I heard about the Thatcher Effect and nearly had a fucking heart attack when I saw it

I showed one of the pictures to Bob and he wouldn't even look at it

He says it's exactly what the guy looked like.

  • The majority of physics is done with very high precision. This is especially true for fundamental values that apply to everything. For example know the mass of an electron with an error of 0.3 parts per billion. I think this discrepancy is evidence of a significant hole in cosmology theory.

OS Boots on one device but fails to boot on another

Hi, I just did my first Linux install (Kubuntu) onto an external NVME drive. It boots fine on my laptop but gives me a "MBR error, insert floppy" screen when I try to run it on my desktop. On the motherboard settings the drive shows as a bootable option but without a UEFI label. What issues could cause this? From what I've read it seems like a boot loader problem but I have no idea why it would be fine on one device but not another. I tried to update the motherboard firmware but the file the manufacturer provides wasn't working. It's running a 2021 version.

Edit: I figured it out. The issue had nothing to do with my Linux installation. My motherboard had a hidden option to change the UEFI boot order, which is entirely separate from choosing which drive to boot from.

This was my first time soldering and it went pretty well. On booting it up the LEDs weren't working on one side and one key wasn't registering, a quick hit with the iron got it going fine.

How Do Nanoparticles Grow? Berkeley Lab Scientists Capture Nanoparticles Combining under High-Resolution TEM

Using a technique called high-resolution liquid cell transmission electron microscopy (LC-TEM) at the Molecular Foundry, the researchers captured real-time, atomic-scale LC-TEM videos of Cd-CdCl2 CSNPs ripening in solution.

In Operando TEM of All-Solid-State Garnet-Based Lithium Batteries

Fully solid-state lithium batteries offer some key advantages over the current liquid electrolyte based systems. But these solid electrolytes under development can be unreliable and their degradation mechanisms are unclear. This investigation employed transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to study the evolution of these materials while they operate. They found that differences between the expansion of the cathode material and solid electrolyte induced delamination at their interface. They also noted microscopic cracks forming in the cathode material, and reduction of LCO to metallic Co when the potential was allowed to drop below 1.5 V vs Li/Li+.
