  • I can't remember much about it now, but I remember really wanting BeOS. I managed to get it installed once, but couldn't get the internet working, so ended up uninstalling it.

  • I bought a few for my wife and kid, just to do the whole easter egg thing, but they were already on offer a few days ago. I got some of the big Kit Kat eggs for £3 each, and the small eggs for £1.50, when they've been about double that in the past.

  • I'm diabetic, so it might kill me, but I really want one of those! :o

  • Funnily enough, I always remember it wrong 🙈

  • Thanks, but unfortunately it hasn't warped, it's just user error. I cut the pieces from the same length of wood, but didn't quite get them flat across the width when I either screwed or glued them together.

I had to screw most of the pieces together from left to right, so I stacked them on top of each other to drill the pilot holes downwards. With hindsight I would have taken longer and clamped them to a flat surface with another flat surface on top, and drilled sideways, if that makes sense.

  • I wouldn't have thought that tape would be enough. It's definitely worth a try though, thanks :)

It's a bit too big to hold against the orbital sander, but I was thinking of clamping some wood that's the same thickness to either side, then screwing those to a bigger piece attached to the table, so the scrap pieces act like a clamp. That should hold the heart in place, and give me a reference of the correct thickness to either sand or route. Maybe...

    1. English (native), Welsh, French, Spanish, German, and binary if I use my fingers 🙌

    EDIT:Bugger, it's 5. I can't remember 6 and 10 in German 🙈

  • I do have a router. I'm not sure how I'd secure the heart though, as it's quite small.

I might have just thought of a way, but I need to look and see what scrap I've got first. Thanks for the idea :)

  • Sorry, what I meant was to clamp the flat part of the heart to the surface so that I could sand or plane the outer edges level with the centre. I don't want to clamp the raised edges, just hold the piece still :)

  • Sorry, bit of a long one, but I like telling this story :)

When I was about 15 or 16, we went on a family holiday to Turkey. My brother was a year younger than me, and we made friends with the teenagers who were renting out the sunbeds and equipment on the beach. On the weekend they invited us to a sort of nightclub a short bus ride away.

It was kind of like a normal nightclub, but it was outdoors with a swimming pool, and allowed older teens in too. We stopped at a traditional Turkish wedding on the way, and had a great time.

When it was time to leave, we headed back to the buses, but two German guys we'd met offered to drop us off on their mopeds instead, as it would be much quicker. We agreed, not realising that they were drunk.

As we were pulling away from the club, my rider was wobbling the moped and weaving up the road. I thought he was just messing around, so just laughed, until he toppled over and crashed.

Luckily, I just rolled up the road a bit and felt ok. The guys on the mopeds disappeared off as quickly as they could. My brother and our friends came running over, so I waved them off, thinking that they were worrying over nothing, but my brother and one of the Turkish boys put themselves under my arms to support me, while another boy ran back to the club. As we got back to the club, the boy who had run off was arguing with the security, but as soon as the security guard saw me, he nodded yes, and came running over, practically carrying me into the club.

I was quite surprised, but he took me to the toilets where there were large mirrors on the wall. My elbows and knees were grazed, but my face looked like something from a horror movie. I was absolutely covered in blood, and it was still running down the side of my face. I'd split my eyebrow open, and the blood was pouring out.

The guys cleaned me up and made sure that I was ok, and put a plaster over the surprisingly small cut, then made sure that my brother and I got on the bus, and knew where we were going.

We got back to the bar where we'd arranged to meet our parents, and my father spotted the plaster. Not realising that it was a plaster in the poorly lit room, he ripped it off, causing me to start bleeding again >.<

  • I'd glue or tape a sheet of sandpaper, larger than the workpiece to a hard flat surface and rub the piece on it.

This is the sort of answer I'm looking for, thank you. I wouldn't have thought of sticking sandpaper down, and it definitely sounds easier :)

I do own a plane, but I haven't used one since I was in school about 30 years ago, and that was already set up. I might have to save that for after I've had a chance to practice first :)

  • I like those odds!

Best way to flatten a piece?

Can anyone tell me how can I flatten a Minecraft heart please? I've put this together:

    https://www.instructables.com/MineCraft-Heart-wood/

but I've noticed that it bows slightly. I've managed to get the ends to raise slightly when I've screwed it together. The top needs to be smoothed too, as there are some small differences between the pieces. Both sides are only off by a millimetre or two, but it's enough to be noticeable.

My thinking is to clamp it down at the centre, which seems to be mostly flat on both sides, then sand the top until it's level, then flip it over and clamp the edges to smooth the bottom.

Are there any likely problems with doing it this way, or is there a better way of doing it? Thanks in advance :)

  • I've noticed a new news bot in the last few days, and it's the only one that seems good so far. It posts links to news articles, but puts a short summary under it too. I find that to be a lot more helpful than the bots, and even the users, who post a headline and a link, then nothing else.

  • As in people who ban books. It tripped me up too.

  • Good thinking, thanks 🙂

  • I need to do the same, but I keep forgetting until I need to use it. At that point, I make something quick and dirty, then end up breaking it 🙈

  • In that case I'm doing lots 🙈😂

    Oh bother!

I made a quick and dirty zero clearance plate to cut some small pieces, but realised that I needed to cut a larger piece of MDF while I was working. Ok, I thought, the saw is already set up, it won't take a minute.

Then promptly cut the zero clearance board in half...

  • If you do find the name, could you post it here please? It sounds like it could be good :)

Looking for a replacement for a Xiaomi Mi 10t Lite 5g

    Hi all :)

My wife's broken her phone to the point where it's not holding a charge properly, so I need to replace it. I've been looking at replacements, but I don't know enough about current chipsets to know which ones are decent.

The main things she needs are, decent battery life, an SD card, NFC, and more than 64GB of internal storage. If the OS can be changed in the future to get security updates, that would be a bonus. Given the direction that they seem to be going, with collecting data and locking down the bootloader, I'd prefer to move away from Xiaomi if possible.

The catch is though, we're on a small budget. Thanks to Christmas, we've only got around £200 to £250 to spend. If there's a significant upgrade, we can go to about £300, but that's a stretch.

I've looked at a few phones, and the Nothing phones seem to tick all the boxes, but are right at the top of the budget. The Motorola range looks good, as does the Poco M6 Pro, but like I say, I don't know enough about the chi

It's just taken me 55 minutes to watch a 35 minute episode on Plex because of crashes

I put on an episode of a show I'm watching, and about ten minutes into it, I missed something on screen, so pressed the skip back button on my remote. The spinning loading circle came up, but stayed for a while, and the episode froze at the point where I'd pressed the button.

No problem I thought, I haven't used Plex for a while, it might just need a little kick. I restarted my fire stick, and restarted the Plex server, just in case. A few minutes later, I didn't catch what a character said, so I tried skipping back again. Plex crashed again. Another set of restarts and we're watching again.

About 15 minutes later, the episode just freezes. No error message or warning, just a frozen screen. I gave it a minute and pressed play, and Plex crashed back to the episode selection screen. Pressing play worked again for a few minutes, until I got an error on screen telling me that my network is too slow for the video. Roblox seems to be inflating user numbers again

I've just had an email from Roblox talking about changes to the parental controls. It looks more like they're forcing parents to create accounts, presumably to inflate user numbers going by the news stories two weeks ago.

    The email text is below.

We’ve been working on a series of important changes that we’ll be making to your child’s account, (account name), next month.

About Roblox accounts with parent privileges Next month, we’re changing the way parents manage their child’s experience on Roblox by introducing Roblox accounts with parent privileges. After linking your account to your child’s, parents can view and update parental controls for their child all from their own device. Parents also get access to insights about their child’s Roblox usage, such as their daily screen time and on-platform friends.

Is there a way to use a vpn on one network card, and use a second network card for a regular connection?

I've got a Linux server running Xubuntu at the moment (It was a media player first), and it also runs two Minecraft servers for the family. It has two network cards that are both connected to the internet. Is there a way to bind the VPN to one of the cards and use the other one for regular use?

I've got Surfshark as my VPN, and it doesn't allow port forwarding under Linux. I've got some software that I want to keep behind the VPN, but the lack of port forwarding is stopping me from sharing the Minecraft servers, and when the VPN is active, it slows down the connection to some of my services like Plex.

I've tried to look it up, but I just don't know enough to get myself anywhere. I've found results that talk about name spaces and routing tables, but they assume a level of knowledge that I just haven't got yet.

I want to use the Arr suite and qBittorrent as the main programs behind the VPN, and Plex, Mylar (a comic manager), Syncthing, and Minecraft as the main programs without it. If

As some of you may already know, I manage a website and app for a small music festival. It runs on a shoestring budget and helps to support the village I grew up in, so I volunteer my time and resources. Part of this is creating the site and things like posters using resources that I've made.

Recently we had an issue where someone created a logo for us, and after we'd used it for a few years, they claimed it back. It turned out that when they created the logo, neither side thought to draw up any sort of agreement on how it could be used. I want to put something in place that makes it clear that anything that I create for the festival can be used by them forever, but without restricting myself from using it.

My main concern is for the website and app, so that I can use the same structure in the future.

I'm not concerned about the fine print, like saying that I can use this specific text layout or whatever, I just want to stop either side from restricting the other in the event of a m

I've just installed Mint 22 on my laptop, and I've got two storage drives alongside my main drive. I want these drives to be available to all users on boot, and to be readable and writable. At the moment they're treated as removable drives, and are mounted under the individual user. As a result, any permissions that I'm setting as the owner are not sticking when they're mounted by another user.

The first drive is synced with my main PC through Syncthing, and is synced to Onedrive from there. The second drive is my music, podcasts, and audiobooks, which are all synced through Syncthing only. I'm the only person using the laptop and

It turns out that something has been watching the Earth in minute detail since before the solar system was formed, down to a sub molecular level. It can give you the answers to any historical questions, but not things like what someone was thinking or feeling.

All the world's problems have been solved, and the information is only used with the strictest privacy, e.g. you can only get information on living people with their permission, or if you're a member of law enforcement solving a crime.

Can a Linux installation be run as a VM in Windows?

This might sound daft, but something similar used to work with live discs.

I've got Windows 10 and Mint 21.1 dual booting on my computer at the moment. Every so often I'll realise that I've missed something from my Windows installation. If it's important, I then have to boot to Windows to get the information, or the settings etc.

Is there a way to virtualise my Mint installation so that I can run both the OSs at once to make sure that I've got everything?

VirtualBox had a tool to do this with a live USB, but that was back in the MBR days, so it probably won't work with modern hardware.

EDIT: Sorry, I should clarify, Mint and Windows are on the same physical disk, and the plan is to remove Windows once I'm done.

Update: I'm giving up. It looks like it is possible if you have separate disks with separate boot partitions, but getting it to work with a shared boot partition is harder work than I'm willing to do right now.

Looking for a collaborative notes app

Hi all, I need your expertise please :)

tldr: I'm looking for something to create and share lists with my wife, but that also allows her to edit them, preferably with a WYSIWYG editor, on both our Android devices and Windows and Linux computers. I have complicated medical needs, and my kid is autistic, so there are things that we cannot forget. I'm setting up a small business in the UK, and need some accounting software to keep track of everything, and generate invoices, that sort of thing. I tried Wave a few years ago, and it looks like it does what I need, but is US based and proprietary.

It has the option of linking to your bank account too, and automatically pulling your transactions etc. This is quite important, as I'm trying to get diagnosed with ADHD, and have a terrible memory. I won't remember to manually enter transactions regularly.

Being able to use it on Android and Windows / Linux would be ideal. I can self host it if there are any options that work.

    Hi all :)

I've been playing Minecraft with the family, and running a local PaperMC server for a while now, and last year set up an online server with the Oracle free tier. I've had a load of failed login attempts recently, and the server crashed. I don't know if they were related, but it made me realise that I've missed a few steps during the setup.

I have a domain that points to the server through Cloudflare, so it's easier to share, and I've got a whitelist / allowlist of Minecraft users to keep it private. My thinking is that this is what I want:

Domain name through Cloudflare to stop things like DDoS attacks, and to have https certificates (might need LetsEncrypt too?).

PaperMC server running on an Ubuntu server on Oracle's free tier. 2 cores and 10GB RAM should be enough for less than a dozen players.

Pterodactyl control panel to manage the server through a GUI from anywhere.

Looking for a minimal distro for a virtual machine

    Hi all :)

I manage a handful of websites and their emails using the PortableApps suite on Windows, so have a separate browser and mail client for each one. This has worked well for years, but now I'm switching to Linux, Mint specifically. I've read that I can set up profiles on Firefox and probably Thunderbird, or maybe run separate instances with things like AppImages, but it sounds like it's a messy solution, and could end up with me using the wrong profile by mistake

What I want to do is set up a virtual machine for each site, and have a completely separate instance of the programs, and hopefully a way to easily transfer the machines to other systems if needs be.

I'd prefer to use a Debian / Ubuntu based distro with Apt and the 'Windows' style desktop, as that's what I'm already used to, but am I better off installing Mint and stripping it down, or is there something more suited to this?

How do you add buildings when the map is crooked?

Sorry, crooked isn't the best word, but I can't think of a better one.

I'm still quite new to OSM, and I want to start adding the buildings in my town. When I open the edit option though, the map overlay is at an angle. It's not a massive amount, but it's enough that you can see one sometimes two sides of most buildings, so the roof isn't aligned straight down, if that makes sense?

I live near Aberdare in South Wales, and you can see that where someone has added some buildings in the town centre at some point, they're now not aligned with the map overlay:

    https://www.openstreetmap.org/edit#map=20/51.71312/-3.44499

Do I draw around the roof that I can see on the map? Do I edit the existing buildings so that they line up with the overlay? I'm not sure what the best course of action is for something like this.

Need help repairing or replacing a Xiaomi Mi 10t Lite 5g (UK)

Update: My wife has decided to go for the repair. I managed to find the parts for about £30, and we're getting it done in a local place next week. Thanks for the advice :)

    Hi all :)

My wife has dropped her Mi 10t Lite 5g one too many times, and now as well as a cracked screen, it won't charge. As far as I can tell, the charging port has come loose.

I'm hoping to get an estimate of the repair price, as all the local shops are closed until next week, but I'm also hoping to find some possible replacements to give her some options.

She mainly uses it for Facebook, emails, and WhatsApp, and some of the farming games where you seem to just click crap randomly. She also connects it to her car for maps and music, and takes photos of our kid.

A micro SD slot is essential, mostly due to the amount of music and photos she stores on it.

I'm hoping to spend around £200, but that's flexible if there's a jump in quality or features.

Need some help with Xubuntu networking please.

    Hi all :)

Apologies for the long writeup, but I'm not sure if the background is important or not.

I've got a media server currently running Xubuntu (getting ready to be transitioned to a proper server OS before anyone asks), and I've been having a problem with static IP addresses.

About a year ago I was having a problem with the ethernet card switching from a static IP to DHCP, and screwing up the services that depended on the IP address. It appeared to be a problem with my ISP router (BT SmartHub 2). I thought I'd fixed it, and didn't have any trouble for a while.

I added a second ethernet card to split my traffic. My VPN doesn't allow split tunneling on Linux, and I wanted some traffic to go through the VPN while some bypassed it. I hadn't set anything up for that yet, but did give the second ethernet card a static IP address. I changed the DNS servers on both to go through my AdGuard installation on the same machine, and some other ad blocking DNS servers.

    When I first installe
